The CineStill 120 Street Challenge in Hong Kong

- For my trip to Bangkok and Hong Kong, CineStilFilm in California gave me some free film to do some projects with, no questions asked. I could do whatever I wanted. Much of it I gave away, but I wanted to do something special with the CineStill 800T 120 film. I decided to collaborate with Meteor Leica and Barton1972 and do a 120 street challenge. We would invite a group of friends (not just pro photographers) who were photographically competent, and we would each shoot 2 rolls of 120 film in 2 hours in the Causeway Bay area. Some of us had never shot with CineStill, others were unfamiliar with the 120 film format. Some had never shot 2 rolls of film in 2 hours before. I thought this would make a fun video to capture, and so it was. Thanks for all the participants of this project:

Reminds me of the fun photo marathon competitions in the old days of a big number of people shooting 24 frames of film in 24 hours then handing your roll in and getting judged. Started at midday Saturday you were given a 24 roll of 35mm film and a piece of paper with 6 topics / themes. You had to use you imagination to take 6 photos, in order, then at 6pm meet at the next checkpoint to get the next 6 topics for the next 6 hours. Same at midnight (6 more topics) then finally at the next checkpoint at 6am for your final six. At midday Sunday you hand in your roll of 24 photos taken in order. Then go home to sleep! The organisers process and judge your for interpretation, execution and originality. What a way to push your skills.
Glad to find this video. Thinking about buying a few rolls of 120 and driving over to Seattle to play in the streets at dusk/night.
It's a great film for shooting either day or night, but it's king for night photography in an urban setting :-)

Move to NYC
If you lived in a city of lights, you probably would be less enthusiastic about the flare halo you'd get around each of those lights. That's the quality price you pay for CS's removal of the antihalation layer when repackaging Vision 3 movie film.
I think Joseph did an awesome job scanning these! Its my least favorite part of the process!! Well done chap :-) Awesome vid (as usual) Crackin shots! Love the film too (but i think some of that credit MUST go to Joseph ;-) )

What a wonderful video, loved it all...the shots everyone got came out really well considering you were all on a 2 hour time limit. and something else I think was really great was to see a group of people, all different nationalities, coming together and and just having a great time with each other as you share your love of photography and having fun getting pics with your cams. you should try doing more of these if you can, love them. love Cinestill 800T as well, probably my all time favourite for shooting with at night, love the effects you can get with it.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I love these types of projects, but it definitely takes a lot of time, planning, organizing and video editing. It took me months to get everyone to submit their pictures. Some are airline pilots, doctors, world travellers. I had 2 major sponsors (CineStill and Meteor). I had a second videographer. Great project and great shots! This film is magic, love shooting it indoors in 120. Great for some cinematic wedding candids. Have you tried it with flash? Just shot a roll using a yellowish vintage flash, waiting to see the results!
I'd love to try this film with strobes. Perhaps that will be the next challenge :-)
Just curious, if Cinestill is motion picture film (with the remjet layer removed) where does the 120 size come from?
there has always been standard 35mm and large format 65mm motion pictures film (often labeled IMAX). They've modified the large movie format to a medium format film size, which takes some modification and time to put on 120 spools.

Photographic film is made in a variety of lengths and widths, so it depends on the factory to cut a custom width/length to order. Get the word out, take orders, contact the film producer for a special order, and presto, high speed, Tungsten-balanced roll film. One big change from the Analog days is using a computer, hardware, and software to scan negatives instead of making color prints. (One can, within limits, color correct paper prints from color negative film.)

Yeah sure, but shouldn't it be much cheaper than (they are using 24 pictures per second)? Or is the process to remove this layer and packing it on a 120mm roll this time consuming and complex?

ya everyone did a great job considering the time constraints and the fact no one used a tripod.
Makes me a little sad that I didn't bump into you guys while I was there late last year -- I also happened to have my Rolleiflex 2.8F with me.
Sam Shui Po and Mong Kok are great environments to take pictures in.
How are you guys able to capture motion & make the scene so bright?
Is it just a bigger aperture? Or is it only due to the 800 iso? Or were some film pushed??
I think Joseph pushed his, but with a bigger camera, it's easier to stabilize the camera. I was using a monopod for many of my shots. But one can comfortably hand hold 1/15th of a second if you practice. The issue is the movement of people and vehicles.

Do you use an 85B filter when you shoot this CineStill film?
using the 85B filter is only recommended when shooting during the day. At night, since it's a tungsten balanced film, and much of the outdoor lighting is tungsten or within the tungsten light temperature (which is warm), it works perfectly.

For film developing try Dotwell in TST, as for Leica cameras go to Champagne Court also in TST.

bigheadtaco how long will you stay there?
Always wondered if the extra stop on the Rollei is worth the extra money over the 3.5 version
I owned a 3.5F with the 75mm Xenotar lens first. Then bought a 2.8F planar. I ended up selling the 2.8 because I preferred the 3.5. It is only small difference in depth of field and light gathering and I felt the 3.5 rendered more "classically".
I used a 3.5F with a Planar with Cinestill800T in Shinjuku - provided there's enough neon lights around, it's easy to handhold at 1/30s and small and light enough to not necessitate the 2.8F.
I'm not 100 % sure, but doesn't the 2.8 version have a brighter focusing lens also?
either way they aren't great for night shots, and the 2.8 is much heavier, if you want the shallow dof I dont think Rollei is the way to go
I know people love the halos but not me unfortunately, if they could find a way to get rid of that it would be amazing.
Not a problem. Buy Vision 3 film in bulk, save a pile of bucks, then develop it yourself and save another pile of bucks. (No one "loves the halos"; they just have to slide by the problem without calling a pig a pig.)
Randall Stewart Lots of people I know but it specifically for the halos, and look for subjects that accentuate these. I will try the Vision 3 some time, does it come in 120?
