It would be nice if Rob also tested the Apple Watch on an older adult. I'm 68 years old, and while my Apple Watch SE2 agrees fairly well with my Dreem2, the results are not nearly as similar as Rob has been reporting in his most recent series of Apple Watch family sleep tests. I suspect that Apple's sleep algorithm has been developed using data that is heavily weighted toward younger adults and therefore may not be as valid for seniors.

@@TomKarches Tom, we can only hope that more of the sleep tracking companies invest in research with appropriate representation of older adults so that they can provide persons like us with more accurate sleep data than they currently report. I invested in a Frenz sleep headband since writing my comment above and it is just as ludicrous in its generosity with regard to deep sleep detection as the Apple Watch SE can be stingy. It was routinely reporting well over an hour, and several times over two hours of deep sleep despite the fact that the average for someone my age is ~25-35 minutes tops. Furthermore, they have yet to refund my money ($500+!) as promised even though they've had possession of my returned unit for over a week. Don't be tempted with the Frenzband like I was!

Hallo Rob, do you think there is a difference in sleep tracking capabilities between Apple Watch 5 and Series 9, with both having the newest WatchOS installed? Is there a difference and is its worth buying a new model? Also, which app is the best? You said in another video that the whoop and also Oura Ring apps are among the best (if I remember correctly), because what Apple offers in terms of app is only the health app which is not great. I seems that the whoop app seems the best, since you can actually track how different factors (like drinking alcohol at dinner before) change your sleep.. right? What do you think? I think only with the Apple Watch 5 I don't get very far... Whats your opinion? Or is the Apple Watch with some app a great combination? Read somewhere else that the SleepWatch app might be a good options? Thank you for all your hard work!

I don’t work for Apple, so I can’t say why they make the product choices they make. HOWEVER, in the United States (and, as I recall, the regulations in the EU and Japan are quite similar), anything that makes a diagnosis is a medical device and must be FDA approved. Having data correlations between sleep quality and lifestyle or nutrition may be flying very close to the sun, with regard to that area of administrative law. This may be why they don’t go out of their way to do that.
Having said that, the Apple Watch is an FDA approved medical device with 510(k) clearance for some of the features it has (like it’s atrial fibrillation detection).
The problem with adding data correlation between things like nutrition and sleep is that the fda really may want to see some clinical studies showing that nutrition and sleep are linked in the way you are implying and every time you want to mess with the algorithm you’d need new FDA approval.

Very interesting, thanks! One detail actually interested me a lot... The many small "peaks" of awake time from the lab equipment (unaccounted for by the AW) were present in the graphs of the sleep tracking of a friend of mine (many) years ago, he was using a Fitbit small band - can't remember which one - while I was using an Amazfit BIP. I didn't trust my bip at that time and honestly... It was a very basic watch that did not even include rem detection, but I kinda didn't trust my friends Fitbit also due to that pattern full of small little awake moments... However... Now I do think that could be more accurate than I thought!
Possible that the human natural sleep patterns include those fast awakenings but basically all consumer oriented algorithms cut them out in some way for making the graph more "readable" and easy to digest for the user? Even more... If this is done through trying to tune the algorithm sensitivity to avoid detecting them alltogether (instead of just cutting them off) this could impact the overall performance of the algorithm itself (unsure if I was able to explain myself, here...)
In any case, it's so interesting and fun to try to understand how all this works, thanks for sharing all these information in such details that allows me to pretend I understand them 😂

Two other studies comparing sleep trackers showed Apple to perform worse with deep sleep. There are tons of people on boards asking why 8 hour sleep only getting 30 mins deep sleep. Supposedly Oura ring does better at recording this but worse at knowing when you are asleep or awake. Not sure how his getting his to read so accurate but Apple Watch worse metric is monitoring deep sleep and that’s quoted from Apple themselves.

my deep sleep is like theresa. my garmin shows very more normal'er deep sleep results. I always thought it was just me. But it seems that there are certain users where their deep sleep is just detected wrong / poorly with Apple's algo. However, REM and the Light sleep were all detected just fine!
Can you do one with Garmin's latest Firstbeat Analytics. I get a more clear picture of my sleep with Garmins Fenix 7s and with the latest First beat analytics algo that Garmin's latest top devices are using.
But Theresa's sleep tracking profile is pointing to a glaring inaccuracy of Apple's Algo. When it works on some people, it seems to work great. But when it does not work well on others like Theresa, the results are just plain wrong since the Deep Sleep being measured is basically negligible. That would make the interpretation of the sleep result wildly inaccurate!

    • @yildiraykomurcu
      @yildiraykomurcu Год назад +1

I think the best alternative is Huawei Watch 3 Pro. Samsung measures many metrics but measures none of them accurately. See its heart rate and sleep tracking review on this channel. Huawei is on par with Apple in terms of heart rate measurement. It is even better than Apple in that it can do 7/24 measurement. It can also do 7/24 blood oxygen and skin temperature monitoring. However sleep tracking of Huawei is just bad, cannot match to that of Apple. But they updated their sleep tracking algoritm to TruSleep™ 3.0 and Rob hasn’t reviewed it yet. Samsung can measure additional health metrics, that you cannot find in other devices like blood pressure and body composition (body fat, muscle, water ratio). But Rob hasn’t reviewed those features and we don’t know how accurate those measurements are. Blood pressure is a very important health metric. We will see it implemented in every wearable no longer than 2025. You also need to consider about battery life. Regular Apple Watch cannot finish a day and Samsung can last two days best, with Huawei you only need to charge once a week while all of your health metrics get monitored 7/24. By the way, I would wait for Huawei Watch 4 or GT 4. They will be released soon. They will have similar features with Watch Ultra but with an affordable price tag.

Watching this, no pun intended, and revisiting this as now bought a used series 8, Apple sleep tracking ect on the app is indeed getting much better with newer updates, I wonder if people with more hair vs less hair on the wrist effects results 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔, i also have a cheap smart watch with oled screen and the battery lasts a week, I’ve turned off as many battery draining things including always on display and different watch faces drain less, how come my cheap watch lasts a week vs Apple Watch 8 one day 🤔🤔🤔

Hi, thank you for the video. I currently have an Amazon Halo and it has helped me in sleeping better. Soon, however, Amazon will discontinue the Halo, and I am looking for a new sleep tracker. I am not an athlete, but it looks like the Whoop tracker has a clear, useful app interface. Which do you think would be better for a 75 year old man? A Whoop or an Apple watch?

    • @fitnesswithbenlifestyle

Apple Watch is better than Whoop 4.0 for tracking sleep. Apple can also can detect a fall or accident so overall the Apple is your better bet and also more affordable over a 2 year period. I just cancelled my Whoop 4.0 after being with Whoop for over 2 years. Hope this helps.

Did you test the pixel watch as well? The Apple watch an pixel watch are my top two contenders right now, and this would really help me make a decision since sleep tracking is the most important feature for me.
Main thing speaking against the appel watch for me is that I dont want to switch to an iPhone and would have to use some workaround with a used iPhone to connect my Galaxy and the apple watch.
    edit:
If any of you guys have tried using an apple watch and an android phone as your daily driver, whats your experience?

I sleep with an Oura 3, Apple Watch Ultra (snug with the Velcro strap), and Whoop 4.0.
Apple Ultra said over 8 hours sleep (0 deep sleep)
Oura 3 said over 8 hours sleep (37 minutes deep sleep)
Whoop 4.0 said over 8 hours (over 2 hours of deep sleep)
This is almost every night. Not sure which os more accurate but Apple Watch Ultra and Series 8 always show me less than 20 minutes of deep sleep a night with over 8 hours of sleep detected. 53 year old Caucasian male.
