I took American Sign Language for 4 years and I used to volunteer and work with the deaf community in my area growing up. Both the interpreter and actress are using actual American Sign Language which is incredibly surprising to me. Also, they definitely could have found a deaf actress or even a hearing actress who is born to deaf parents (which is a common thing). Overall, they definitely could have found someone connected to the deaf community or deaf culture in some way. You’d think but they actually went through many more hours of just normal day to day jury stuff than they did wacky hijinks. What you saw was just the gags they pulled every now and then.
Finding out the guy was from Oregon completely explained him not thinking anything was up, tbh. Plus, I mean, how many times in your life have you dealt with wacky shenanigans without thinking you must be on some reality show?
Maannn every time I see one of your videos pop up, I get sooo excited!! I'm so happy I found your channel when I did!! I've needed the laughs that you've given me this morning 🖤😂
I watched jury duty as it came out, it’s actually a hilarious show. I never saw the original Joe schmo show, but I watched another RUclips video about it, and it’s honestly a heartwarming story
You should look at Renegade the show. It's from the 90s, Lorenzo plays a bounty hunter with a spiritual Native American partner/friend. I always wondered if it was loosely based on the comic Nomad which he looked just like the main character.
@Chris James As a (hearing) bilingual raised by Deaf signers, I’m glad you mentioned they could’ve hired a d/Deaf actor! There’s no reason they shouldn’t have. Linguistically… the actors are using sporadic signs that occasionally (somehow) manage to fit the context, and are somewhat “correct” individually (but not grammatically). They certainly aren’t using ASL. 😅 Thanks for the entertaining video!
Ironically, the bounty hunter iteration of the Joe Schmo Show I found way more interesting than the actual bounty hunter reality shows they were based on.
9:08 Lorenzo Lamas was actually very recognizable for a few years in my country, when they were airing Renegade on one of our national TVs. We had only 3 channels back then (early 2000s) and the show was actually OK when there weren't that many things to watch. That being said I had no idea that's him and wouldn't recognize him if they didn't write it.
Jury Duty was awesome, but I'll never understand how buddy didn't recognize Kirk Fox right away. That guy's been in a bunch of pretty well known productions
Hey Chris James have you ever heard of Mad House the reality TV show where they got a vampire, a witch, a body modification guy, nudist and like 2 others living in a house with a bunch of normals. It might not be called that. But I'd love it if you did it on this one because this show at this point feels like a fever dream lol
Wasn't Michael Weaver on a short-lived UPN sitcom called “The Mullets”? It was with David Hornsby (Cricket from It's Always Sunny...), John O’Hurley, and Loni Anderson.
"I play the big, muscular token black guy that appears on reality shows" Idgaf. That's hilarious. Genuinely observant and off-putting without necessarily being offensive. I'm willing to die on this hill
From my understanding, they do casting calls in the acting community for reality shows. It would be pretty normal to see a person who you auditioned with at another call.
the moment when we here the bike and that music is hilarious :D and then the moment between the "hero bounty hunter " and the "deaf" girl is precious comedy;) and then :D the resolution about the "key" is ridicilous haha
Lorenzo Lamas is one of those Soap Opera people whose name I know but couldn't tell you anything about. Wikipedia says he was on Big Time Rush though so that's cool I guess
Well I don't know or care about this "Gunnar" and I assume many others do to. So why would we jump ship to another creator if we have good content right here
I really enjoyed the original Joe Schmo Show. Unfortunately it’s a premise that can’t be repeated without problems with upping the ante and “contestants” being suspicious of the show (which was seen in the second season)
Chris!! I’d love it if you could review some Australian reality shows. They’re probably not as insane as what’s going on with TLC but they can still be pretty hectic at times. I’d really recommend beauty and the geek, my mum your dad, love island Australia, highway patrol, big brother, world’s strictest parents and gogglebox
I can't believe you never saw the show The Renegade!!! It also had Branscombe Richmond who played Bobby 6 guns and Stehpen J Connell as Detective Dixon... A great show!
17:00 Lol! I've pretended to be someone else upon running into people I've known for years. This guy will never make it as an actor if he can't keep his s**t together when a stranger from a major metropolis says he thinks he looks familiar.
years later I still stand by this: Joe Schmo Season 1, the original season might be THE best comedy series ever made. I rarely rewatch any TV or movies but I can watch it every few years and die loving and laughing.
I'm not deaf or hard of hearing, but I try my best to learn about other disabilities since I am disabled in other ways. I know for a fact they could have gotten a deaf actor because a lot of disabled actors are often passed up for roles and it's a big thing that disabled people advocate for aka: not using able bodied people to play disabled roles. So I am certain that they could have found a deaf actor. Also the "deaf voice" was so insulting. I'm used to seeing people imitate voices and mannerisms of disabled people and it always makes me so mad. Not every single deaf person has that "deaf voice" and it feels like a mocking character of it like the whole joke is that "haha she sounds weird even though she can talk normally." It's...really just insulting. Which is a big reason why people don't like abled people playing disabled roles. It will always be a minicry or mockery of the disability and takes away from disabled actors. The most prominent examples I can think of are Sia's awful movie about the autistic girl that is just flat out offensive and ableist and then a lot of big people playing roles for little people and dwarves. Just...no. For the sign language though, I have no idea. I know very little and extremely basic ASL so I could not pick up on if it's real or not. But if it wasn't real ASL then that would just be the icing on the terrible cake so I hope that it IS real at least.
As someone who's studying ASL Interpreting, a lot/all of it is definitely accurate. There's some things with like specific words that are slightly different from how I learned them, but the idea/concept is fully correct. I could get into specifics but it's not required for the point that's being made. Also, they absolutely could have found a deaf/hard of hearing person for the role. With that said, this is still a common problem that happens in media even today which fucking sucks, both in terms of underrepresentation of hearing people playing deaf roles, as well as deaf people being stereotyped harshly
The interpreter bit with the ventriloquist doll made me chuckle because he’s just speaking aloud behind her and she’s answering him as though she’s reading the doll’s lips. Either magic is real or that woman can hear, but no one says anything 😂
First season was the absolute best. Season 2 was ok, but played out with a twist. Season 3 they at least tried some non-traditional reality program. I can't wait to see what new iteration is in progress.
Yeh he’s gotta watch the first 1. 1st guy was such a really good guy that they changed the way they did the show in the middle of the season switching from trying to make fun of him, to just trying to make the guy happy.
First Season is the Best Season! This season when they mentioned finding a guy with Heart is because the Joe from the first season was so wonderfully kind that it was Magical what happened with the show. The original season was designed to make fun of a Regular Dude, a Joe Schmo, but they got a person that was genuinely kind despite the awkwardness of the time the show was created in. The next seasons tried to catch the Magic of that first season, but it was jsut something that couldnt be recreated imo.
goddamnit lol I was really hoping you would do the early 2000's one cuz I haven't seen any of the "newer" ones but I also like seeing things I haven't seen before so this is also great
Feeling so old over the lack of knowing Lorenzo; I watched Renegade when I was younger, plus rented a lot of his action movies. I recognize the redhead from a few Broken Lizard movies

Kristen Wig was on the first Jo Schmo show, she legit got sent to the hospital from a dumb game.
I watched jury duty as it came out, it’s actually a hilarious show. I never saw the original Joe schmo show, but I watched another RUclips video about it, and it’s honestly a heartwarming story
You can find the 2 seasons on RUclips
She responded to the interpreter during her ventriloquism that would have triggered me instantly
You should look at Renegade the show. It's from the 90s, Lorenzo plays a bounty hunter with a spiritual Native American partner/friend. I always wondered if it was loosely based on the comic Nomad which he looked just like the main character.
Nice segue with the shirt. That was pretty slick.
I really appreciate that you actually have the chapters put in for easy navigation of the video. so helpful thanks 😁
I've been craving a new Chris James video... perfect timing!
GREAT ad transition! It was just so smooth and not noticeable!
1 Minute in "The black guy" 😂sigh
“Lavernius, the black guy”
Me: ... oh, they came out swinging! 😂
you should finish this entire season before moving onto the next one this is SUPER entertaining
We’re gonna definitely need more of these from you. Awesome.
Ironically, the bounty hunter iteration of the Joe Schmo Show I found way more interesting than the actual bounty hunter reality shows they were based on.
I think loma was on falcon Crest or one of those 80's late night soap operas. Past my bedtime. Lol.
Can you please do the whole season? I wanna see the rest now lol
Oh Spike T.V. what a treasure.
i only recognized Chelsey Crisp. she played Honey the neighbor in a series called "Fresh off the boat"
Honestly, this show isn't bad lmao. I could sit down and actually watch through this
Jury Duty was awesome, but I'll never understand how buddy didn't recognize Kirk Fox right away. That guy's been in a bunch of pretty well known productions
Love trash tv, love that you are covering a different season than Gunnar. More content!!
I love this show! The vampire guy is my favorite
I loved the way you described your Hawaiian shirt. Now I know how to describe some of mine. So thanks 😂
I came to this video about 4-5 hours ago it’s now 5:30 am and I’ve completely binge watched Jury duty. Definitely need a season 2
Yeah, Chris said "everyone knows how a llama sounds" yet did not even attempt it 😞
More of this though please &thank u
Wasn't Michael Weaver on a short-lived UPN sitcom called “The Mullets”? It was with David Hornsby (Cricket from It's Always Sunny...), John O’Hurley, and Loni Anderson.
I LOVED THIS SHOW IT WAS SO GOOD, WHOLESOME, AND FUNNY
edit: i'm talking about jury duty
Jury Duty was an awesome watch. Very entertaining 💯
I love the idea of a heartfelt guy with strong morals who thinks bounty hunting is a humane job.
I think it’s technically illegal lol
@@LanaAndJen The government literally pays the bounties and maintains the cash bail system so I doubt it’s illegal 🤣
@@LanaAndJen with a liscence anything is legal
U actually made me go & find seasons & watch the show … I had never heard of it before … I enjoyed it !
"I play the big, muscular token black guy that appears on reality shows"
Idgaf. That's hilarious. Genuinely observant and off-putting without necessarily being offensive. I'm willing to die on this hill
It's supposed to be intentionally funny and absurd. I didn't understand Chris' reaction here
People are so sensitive. Woke idiots. Dude can say whatever he wants💯 anyone who gets offended needs to stay off social media and go touch grass
From my understanding, they do casting calls in the acting community for reality shows. It would be pretty normal to see a person who you auditioned with at another call.
8:00 they are absolutely making every last one of the signs up. oof.
Funny, you're the ONLY person that says that in this entire comment section. How's it feel to outted as an idiot?
the moment when we here the bike and that music is hilarious :D and then the moment between the "hero bounty hunter " and the "deaf" girl is precious comedy;) and then :D the resolution about the "key" is ridicilous haha
Came for the shirt, stayed for the Chris James
Lorenzo Lamas is one of those Soap Opera people whose name I know but couldn't tell you anything about. Wikipedia says he was on Big Time Rush though so that's cool I guess
The guy tazing the woman who's begging for her life is hilarious
Imagine going to the casting and auditioning for “the black guy” and not getting the role.
Smh cannot believe you stol gunnar's content /jk
"I think most people know what a llama sounds like"
Do they????
Gunnar already talked about this dude
Is that supposed to matter? Or is this a joke?
So have plenty of others lmao, different people give different commentary :)
Well I don't know or care about this "Gunnar" and I assume many others do to. So why would we jump ship to another creator if we have good content right here
the first joe schmo season was with Matt Gould. Great all around guy. I recommend you watch that first maybe.
I really enjoyed the original Joe Schmo Show. Unfortunately it’s a premise that can’t be repeated without problems with upping the ante and “contestants” being suspicious of the show (which was seen in the second season)
Good shit new chris James love your stuff keep it up
The picture at 1:13, top middle. That's Cricket from It's Always Sunny!
Those shows are nothing like american reality tv
@@halfpint90 yeah that's my point
Holy shit I forgot about this show! All I remembered for years was that there was a show where a girl pretended to be deaf and she wasn’t.
I can't believe you never saw the show The Renegade!!! It also had Branscombe Richmond who played Bobby 6 guns and Stehpen J Connell as Detective Dixon... A great show!
Lorenzo Lamas also played Sandy's jock bf in Grease (the one that Danny gets all jealous about!) My fave movie ❤
But if it wasn't real ASL then that would just be the icing on the terrible cake so I hope that it IS real at least.
please do more vids on this show! This was hilarious.
You're the only one doing season 3. We watch you now since its the only one of its kind so I highly recommend continuing season 3 first. Thanks
Stars on Mars is the reality show you will love so much. It’s pretty new but man it’s a goldmine of unintentional comedy
That bounty hunter read tenacious D on stage in The Pick of Destiny. Specifically for the song Master Explorer. Just in case anyone else was like "hey I've seen him before"
