    Not saying I'm great at ASL, but from what I can see in the video they are actually signing what they are saying. Which is smart on the off chance that Chase actually knows ASL, he would immediately know if they were making it up.

    The first season of this show is so different from everything. It started pretty mean spirited, but about halfway through the cast and crew didn’t want to pull off the prank anymore. It turned out to be a great study on how pure hearted the average person can be and I highly recommend it.

    • @teethgrinder83
      @teethgrinder83 Год назад +40

      It's funny you say that, there's another show that did something like this and they were extremely mean to begin with and then couldn't bring themselves to be so mean later on and ended up being nice but I'll be damned if I can remember if it was a show from here in the UK or if it was an American one I've either seen or just seen reviewed on RUclips, it's annoying me now lol
      there was a really good show we did over here that made a guy think he was literally going into space and they even rigged up a Hollywood-style ship to make it feel to him as though he actually was in space (and even some of the actors were so immersed in it they felt it was amazing and it looked beautiful). They were all so worried about letting him know it wasn't real because he was in such awe and was such a lovely guy and didn't want to let him down, he took it really well though and still thought it was a wonderful experience. Plus he got a good chunk of money which probably helped haha

    • @teethgrinder83
      @teethgrinder83 Год назад +5

      @Justin yeah it was tbh, that show about pretending to take that guy in space really didn't go as they expected-i mean he still looked a bit ridiculous in parts of course but then again so did the actors so I reckon that helped, especially as there was a whole lot of "preparation" for getting them into space and the lines between the actors and the guy got pretty blurred because they were all in it together even if the actors had prior knowledge, if that makes sense lol

    I took American Sign Language for 4 years and I used to volunteer and work with the deaf community in my area growing up. Both the interpreter and actress are using actual American Sign Language which is incredibly surprising to me.
    Also, they definitely could have found a deaf actress or even a hearing actress who is born to deaf parents (which is a common thing). Overall, they definitely could have found someone connected to the deaf community or deaf culture in some way. They also didn't need to do the voice like that; there's varying degrees of deafness and not every deaf person sounds like that.

    @Chris James As a (hearing) bilingual raised by Deaf signers, I’m glad you mentioned they could’ve hired a d/Deaf actor! There’s no reason they shouldn’t have. Linguistically… the actors are using sporadic signs that occasionally (somehow) manage to fit the context, and are somewhat “correct” individually (but not grammatically). They certainly aren’t using ASL. 😅 Thanks for the entertaining video!

    9:08 Lorenzo Lamas was actually very recognizable for a few years in my country, when they were airing Renegade on one of our national TVs.
    We had only 3 channels back then (early 2000s) and the show was actually OK when there weren't that many things to watch.
    That being said I had no idea that's him and wouldn't recognize him if they didn't write it.

    I'm not deaf or hard of hearing, but I try my best to learn about other disabilities since I am disabled in other ways. I know for a fact they could have gotten a deaf actor because a lot of disabled actors are often passed up for roles and it's a big thing that disabled people advocate for aka: not using able bodied people to play disabled roles. So I am certain that they could have found a deaf actor. Also the "deaf voice" was so insulting. I'm used to seeing people imitate voices and mannerisms of disabled people and it always makes me so mad. Not every single deaf person has that "deaf voice" and it feels like a mocking character of it like the whole joke is that "haha she sounds weird even though she can talk normally." It's...really just insulting. Which is a big reason why people don't like abled people playing disabled roles. It will always be a minicry or mockery of the disability and takes away from disabled actors. The most prominent examples I can think of are Sia's awful movie about the autistic girl that is just flat out offensive and ableist and then a lot of big people playing roles for little people and dwarves. Just...no.
    For the sign language though, I have no idea. I know very little and extremely basic ASL so I could not pick up on if it's real or not. But if it wasn't real ASL then that would just be the icing on the terrible cake so I hope that it IS real at least.

    As someone who's studying ASL Interpreting, a lot/all of it is definitely accurate. There's some things with like specific words that are slightly different from how I learned them, but the idea/concept is fully correct. I could get into specifics but it's not required for the point that's being made.
    Also, they absolutely could have found a deaf/hard of hearing person for the role. With that said, this is still a common problem that happens in media even today which fucking sucks, both in terms of underrepresentation of hearing people playing deaf roles, as well as deaf people being stereotyped harshly

    First Season is the Best Season! This season when they mentioned finding a guy with Heart is because the Joe from the first season was so wonderfully kind that it was Magical what happened with the show. The original season was designed to make fun of a Regular Dude, a Joe Schmo, but they got a person that was genuinely kind despite the awkwardness of the time the show was created in.
    The next seasons tried to catch the Magic of that first season, but it was jsut something that couldnt be recreated imo.
