The axles I've seen near me run about $500. I was wondering what your thoughts are about purchasing one of these, opening it up and maybe refurbish it before installing it? I'm certain the one I have is in need of rebuilding.
I do not know if you saw my other videos on this same truck, they are few months after this one, but I pretty much rebuilt the new I installed on this truck. If you were going to rebuild/refurbish one, I would spend the 500 that you were going to spend on a used on your current because the parts on these are not cheap and I would hate to see you spend more money than you need to.
@@operationoverhaul the only problem is, while I am mechanically inclined, I have no experience rebuilding these. I saw your video on the upgrade, but there are a number of things missing that I would need. Like how were the bearings removed/ installed? What about the differential? I didn't see any steps for checking various things and how to adjust it. I think you had some camera issues that skipped some of this.
On part 2 of the rear differential rebuild I showed how I cut the bearings off and pressed them back on. I used a wire snips to cut the cage off of the bearing and remove the actual bearings then I used a cut off wheel and cut the inner races off of the pinion and center section. Then I used the old inner race to press against the new bearing while pressing it onto each part. I did not have to adjust anything really because I re-used the ring gear and pinion but to adjust tooth pattern and backlash you adjust the shims on the sides of the carrier and under the bearing for the pinion.
So that us what I do haven't got a differential yet but LCA UCA and certain parts I keep to rebuild that way you have a back up especially if you offroad finally got a another set of wheels and tire for spares 😊 ya never know what can happen so might as well have a backup for a back up😂 but invest wisely and make good choices question your decision before you full send.
my diff is making a hum now at around 40 mph. Changed the fluid 3x but still a bit noisy. Dealer says gears look fine but I did have water in there as there is some evidence of rust. New diff is $7000 Canadian or $3500 installed from wreckers. Im just going to keep driving it for now. If it needs replacing I may as well drive it until it goes. I can live with a little hum. It has 150,000 miles on it.
Wow that is crazy how much they want to replace the differential. I picked up a c200 for like 250 US and installed it for like another 300 for the guy. Did the pinion bearings looks/feel good on it?
@@operationoverhaul Wow ! That is good to know . Have the same whine issue on 20212 Fronty . Found a salvaged differential assembly from a 2008 model. You can replace them but I would recommend a new crush washer when doing it. I typically change them when doing the yokes on them and then reset them to make sure the specs are good.
@@operationoverhaul oh please, don't apologize. The video is fantastic otherwise. I'm considering doing this job myself and you're saving my bacon here. If you could toss me the torque specs, that would be amazing, but if not, you've already helped immensely with this video.

@@RaymondMadrid-c1g the spec calls for 13-25 inch pounds of rotational torque. So you will need to remove the carrier and measure this. That is the preload torque of the pinion gear only.
I would say it depends on the issue you are having out of it. Also, I would weigh the costs of each as well. You may be able to find a used diff for the price at which axles would cost. What is the issue with your differential?
@@operationoverhaul There is noise coming from the rear, I thought it was the Center bearing on the driveshaft so I replaced the driveshaft and the bearing, but the noise did not go away. I'm not sure where the noise is coming from to be honest. I think is the differential as that’s the only thing back there. The noise increases when I accelerate and stops when I decelerate/take my foor off the pedal.
You can do a couple things to check it out. One, you can drain the fluid and see how much metal is in the fluid and the bottom of the differential. Then you can check the backlash/play of the gears to make sure they are not to loose. Then the last thing you can do it check the axle bearings by jacking up the rear and seeing if you can wiggle the tires any to check the bearings.
I found mine at a local junk yard. If you use car-parts.com you may be able to find one. I did just post another video up of it again. The spider gears went out on it. This is a common issue on these rear differentials. If you happen to pull the cover and that is the issue with yours just let me know and I can send you the part numbers for the gears. My other video shows how much play there was in the gears too.
