I recommend wearing a long wetsuit / exposure suit and gloves while out in the open ocean. It will definitely help prevent incidents like these. And also to snorkel / dive with a buddy.
In 72 and 73 while stationed on Diego Garcia we snorkeled a lot. We were more concerned about Stone fish than jellyfish. One day we heard one of the guys stepped on a Stone fish and everyone thought he was going to die. Turns out it was a spiny sea urchin. I am glad she made a full recovery.

Back in the 80s when I was teenager I was stung multiple times by several jellyfish I'd swam into. Worse pain I've ever felt and that includes losing my left leg while serving in the Army. I'm glad she headed for shore when she did and is doing better. Cheers!

Getting stung by jellyfish feels like getting whipped in the forearms with an extension cord, and dealing with the pain of swollen welts. I have been stung 3 times, all the way from the forearm to the shoulder and part of the chest. As a result, I no longer swim in the ocean, particularly in water which is very warm.
@@chuckh4077It was a loose tentacle. The cells in the tentacles sting automatically, so dead tentacles from dead jellyfish still sting you. There probably weren't any jellyfish nearby at all. Also there are lone jellyfish often, it depends on the jellyfish.
I live in Florida and have snorkeled and scuba dived most of my life. I’ve been stung many times by jellyfish and it can hurt like hell. Can’t even imagine the box jellyfish. I know it’s really dangerous.

Box jellyfish are small and pretty much invisible, they don't have a distinct color like others do. It's very easy to run into them and not even notice until you get stung. Their stings are extremely painful and some species are deadly, but the one she got stung by isn't unless you are allergic to it.

I live in Florida and when I was younger I was in the ocean with my sister and some friends of hers and I got stung on the neck by a man-o-war. Better than a shark I guess since I live in the Shark Attack Capital of the World. 9 of us got stung.

Looked to be a sandy area, gurney's don't like sand. Since she didn't have broken bones or traumatic injuries it was easier then getting a gurney down and trying to push it thru sand. They make beach capable wheel chairs but they have really big flotation tires.
Gurney's wheel would burrow in the sand. They can get a board stretcher, but that would take time going back since she doesn't have any spinal injury or unconscious. It's faster to just hand carry.

They're basically invisible. You either just sort of run into them, or them into you... If you're that unlucky. It makes me scared of the ocean
