Valerie Harper accepts her 4th Emmy Award, her first for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, for "Rhoda" (1976). Please subscribe to my channel @oscarman42
I was informed that when she tried out for the part of Rhoda, the director immediately realized that he had finally found after months of search, the absolute person for the part. He told Harper he knew all along, that only a jew can play a jew. ( Press "Read more" ) She was totally flatered, and did not bother to mention that she was raised Catholic of Irish, French background. ..
Total hogwash, what you were allegedly "informed." Audiences may be so sheltered and naive that they don't know the difference between actors and their characters and that people can only play themselves, but seasoned professionals like Jim Brooks and Allan Burns knew better.
Richly deserved. She was a bonafide comedienne - up there with the greatest of them. Nice nod to Nancy Walker, who also was. She said, "The 9 seasons I played Rhoda were the wind in the sail of my career." Sadly, she didn't get another hit after that but she never stopped working. Remember in 2013 when she announced that her time was short? She kept going until almost the very end.
She looks So Healthy, what a Lousy condition was inflicted on her. Makes you realise how Precious Good Health is - Here Today, Could Be Gone Tomorrow. So sad to see her decline but she kept her smile thru it all. Like watching 'Lou Grant' episodes it's sad knowing so many are no longer with us. As Bob Hope said "Thanks for the Memories" and the Shows, Much Missed in the 'dumbed down' TV of today.
Larry Lee Moniz you know sometimes minds go blank or feel the pressure of the time ticking and they leave people out unintentionally. One famous actress left out thanking her husband. They separated a short time later. Oh. Wait. I may have just proved your point
While she singled out Nancy Walker, which I don't think anyone in the world could fault her for, she thanked the "wonderful acting company", which presumably included Julie, as well as David Groh, Harold Gould, etc. I think this might have been around when Nancy was about to leave "Rhoda" (to star in two failed sitcoms on ABC), and that might have been why she felt the need to specifically acknowledge her.
I remember she was into EST. I think it would have been a lot worse if she had Thanked L. Ron Hubard. To "L Ron" I hope you Scientologists have a sense of Humor.
Like Val's work but usually someone who comes across as too good is not!! She sourpussed face when she tied with Sally Struthers and did a walk out twice for more money once on Rhoda and then on Valerie's family not saying not justified it's just if u read her stuff she never is in the wrong where as in Mary Tyler Moore was brutally honest about her flaws just my opinion....
Wow ..i liked Val too but i always thought she kissed up tp Mary alot in interviews and such..i mean through out her career ...it was annoying but a great actress and probably a nice person who may not have recognized some of her flaws
@@joejoe9435 They were good friends in real life. It was not kissing up. If not for the MTM show she would not have gotten where she got. ‘Rhoda’is a classic that is still good. Mary Tyler Moore was never threatened by Valerie and knowingly hired her knowing how incredibly beautiful she was.
She is stunning. RIP you dear woman. Beauty class and kindness. And one of the best acceptance speeches
She had such perfect timing, facial expressions and true to the character she played. Great actress!
Valerie seems like an old good friend I grew up watching her show and never forget the wedding episode. Miss you Rhoda. R.I.P.

Back in the day when entertainers had class.

Uh...sure.
Valerie looks beautiful. What year is this?
1975
@@oscarman42 TY!
To tell the truth I liked Rhoda better than Mary's show - Mary was such a goody two shoes while Rhoda was real.
Cher looks hot!
Rhoda and Lou Grant show I never took to. Them by themselves didn't click. Mary Tyler Moore was the show.
Who else was nominated? I’m wondering if Mary Tyler Moore was also nominated.
She was! Mary, Valerie, and Jean Stapleton for "All in the Family."
In reality, MTM Show was much classier than the Rhoda series! Valerie was superb.
Once Rhoda got married, it was all downhill.
💙🙏🏻🕯
No love for Julie Kavner... wow!
Larry Lee Moniz you know sometimes minds go blank or feel the pressure of the time ticking and they leave people out unintentionally. One famous actress left out thanking her husband. They separated a short time later. Oh. Wait. I may have just proved your point
Valerie was 'the boss', she didn't have to thank Julie. You can't say every name. ;)
“...an incredible acting company...”
RIP

Was that cher that gave her the award
It sure does look like Cher.
Was that Cher giving her the award
Yes.
She was just beautiful. Always thought it a shame they inexplicably made her out to be Mary's hapless and ugly step sister.
She almost didn't get the part because the producers thought Harper was "too attractive."
Like Val's work but usually someone who comes across as too good is not!! Sounds like you've got an axe to grind.
Wow ..i liked Val too but i always thought she kissed up tp Mary alot in interviews and such..i mean through out her career ...it was annoying but a great actress and probably a nice person who may not have recognized some of her flaws
there's nothing more threatening to people than a woman who knows her own worth
