I am here bc I just now heard Valerie Harper passed away. Gosh i cried. Valerie Harper took a slice of my happiest childhood memories. I will so miss her. Sally is still with us,thank goodness🙏🙏🙏
My understanding, as per Valerie Harper's interview on the Dick Cavett show, Ms. Harper was hoping Cloris Leachman would win because she had previously won the Oscar for "The Last Picture Show". Ms. Harper thought it would be nice if her friend/co-star also won an Emmy. Once Valerie Harper heard her own name, she thought the second winner would be Cloris Leachman, but when it wasn't, that's where you see a look of disappointment on Valerie Harper's face - because she so wanted her friend to win. It was nothing ever against Sally Struthers, I don't think Valerie Harper could have been happier for her either. But it was a very human thing for her to feel disappointment.
Okay I see but it did seem she may not have been comfortable sharing the award. But you could be right not sure. Maybe she did feel uncomfortable winning over Chloris. Valerie was always a gracious lovely person
Cloris Leachman wound up winning 8 Emmys. She was hardly overlooked. With all 8 being Primetime Emmys (can’t count the daytime one here) I think that beats Ed Asner, with 7 for most wins by any actor.

I think having a tie is an insult to both nominees. These are important awards for the best in their class. So it should only have only one person as best. If the people who decide these things felt that both nominees were equally as good, then they should have gone back and found which one had the edge over the other and chosen that one as winner. Having a tie is like asking them to share one award with each other (even though each received one). And since Valerie Harper won the year prior, I believe that should have been the edge in favor of Sally Struthers and she should have been sole winner there. This is just how I view it.

Valerie Harper should have won this award solo. Rhoda Morgenstern is one of the best classic TV characters of all-time and no one could of played Rhoda but Valerie Harper.

I've watched this clip a few times and read all the comments, and my thought is this: I think the reason Harper looked so sour was probably due to the audience barely applauding for her, then (comparatively) going wild when Struthers' name was called. Sally was quite obviously the more popular win!
It reminded me of when Barbra Streisand won as a tie for FUNNY GIRL with Katherine Hepburn. The first name read was Katherine Hepburn and there was mild applause but when Streisand's name was announced, the audience erupted.
Harper had also won the year prior, this could possibly explain the applause factor not to mention since they know it's a tie there's anticipation to see who else. I'm sure it was just a confusing sort of situation. I doubt what people are reading into Harper's facial expressions are accurate.

The Oscars still have the same rules & if a tie did happen they announce it as is, with the most recent happening as early as 2013. While in the EMMYs I genuinely don't recall any other ties beyond this one in the vid. Also, has there ever been a three-way tie in the Academy awards? If that were to happen would they still announce all 3 winners or will they do another vote to narrow it down to 1 or 2 winners?
