      @courtw3231 if you're willing to roll up your sleeves your best bet would be a rake and a wheelbarrow. That's called thatch and it can actually mat and compact in your yard turn yellow gross. Or if you want to get fancy buy a thatch collector that you pull behind your mower it just throws it into the wagon with tines that spin pretty awesome!

    I landscape for a living, so one important factor I didn't hear mentioned is uniformity of width. Make sure to not overlap too much onto the former stripe. You want each stripe as close in width as you get it for a more uniform look. I see people at times with nice, straight stripping, but they tend to overlap too much and it looks skewed. I hope this helps.

    I made a striper out of PVC pipe. Filled it with loose stone for weight, and then capped it. Then hooked it to my lawnmower with some chain and just dragged it as I mowed. Did double passes in same direction for big stripes. Looked great! Never pay for a roller!!! Only cost about $8.00!!!!

  • @sarahcrain8083
    @sarahcrain8083 6 лет назад +2

    Neighbors often comment about how nice my lawn looks. It's because I take my time and cut it where the stripes are uniformed. I cut it in different directions each cut. If you cut your grass in the same pattern, eventually it creates depressions or ruts in the soil.
    Another key to stripping your lawn is to keep your mower serviced. Oil and filter changes are a must for the life of your lawnmower engine. Keeping the blade sharp is a must. A dull or wore blade puts more stress on the engine. Overly wore blades are a safety issue. A well maintained blade cuts evenly and allows more grass clippings to be collected in the bag. If you chose not to bag, then cutting the grass more frequently is beneficial in the way your lawn looks. Either way a sharp blade is a must.
    Another factor in a even cut is making sure the deck is adjusted to the same level on all four tires. The back tires are only one level at a time above the front, as you gradually raise the cutting height to accommodate the cutting season.
    Remember oil, filters and well maintained blades are cheaper than engines. Regardless if it is a cheap off brand mower or a professional grade mower.

    Another method is to cut your lawn in a pattern. Make sure the mower is on the highest setting. Do your cutting. Upon completion, lower your deck 1 or 2 notches. Then cut again but this time cut every other row. It will look fantastic. But be careful not to do your 2nd cut too short. You may damage the grass. Ive been doing it for years. Tons of compliments.

    I cut in five different patterns; clockwise in a continuous inward corkscrew(
    because my mower discharges on the right side); North/South; East/West; NE/SW; NW/SE. This helps minimize rutting which for me using a 750# lawn tractor is a problem. I'd like to use a walk-behind mower to do all 19K SF of my lawn but I don't have time for that in my schedule. When cutting diagonally I start at the middle of the lawn and sight from one corner to the other. This is the longest distance so the straighter I get this the better everything following will be. To help this I find something in the distance, preferably about twice the distance away as the distance across my lawn to use as a visual guide. I line this up in my mind with a second feature, usually the corner of the lawn and then I aim for that distant point. I have effectively doubled the distance and this makes getting that first swath as straight as possible.

    im a scaper...the way mowers are constructed the wind under the deck and the direction your walking pushes the blades forward...its so it bags good...the blade should be pitched lower in the front by 1/4 to 3/8 of a inch so your cutting at the front of the machine...lighter colored pass your seeing the sun on the back of the blades of grass and the darker pass your looking into the tops of the blades of grass and seeing the shadows..in the summer in new england i cut 4 inches so the ground gets more shade and stays cooler...less weeds...less watering...your lawn will be last to burn and first to recover...as far as making a straight pass pick a object where the end of your pass will be like a fence post or base of a tree and point your left front tire at it and keep heading towards that object with your left front tire...youll be amazed how straight you can make your lines

    If I was your neighbor I would have devised a plan to convince you that it would be beneficial to use my lawn to make a “from this to this” video. I would explain how it’s great content for you to utilize and how its very conveniently located for you.
    Sincerely,
    Maybe Your Neighbor

    cool video, My push mower had one of those Mudflaps in the back, but I took it off, Privately I don't do stripes, but for commercial I do, very interesting video, the mower also spreads the cut grass out better and gets closer to obstacles better without the chute on, bet then I'll have to wear safety glasses when mowing though, small price to pay, oh well, like I said, very interesting video.

    I must either have too thin of a lawn or possibly a not easily stripped lawn. During my next session, I plan to double cut the front and lower it the second time around to hopefully achieve maximum results.

      What type of grass do you have?

    • @cyrilthomas9878
      @cyrilthomas9878 7 лет назад

      Cyril Thomas to be quite honest I think it's a rough mix with clover mixed in. lol I know it sounds terrible but it's coming along. I'm fairly certain it's mostly warm season grass and I'm addressing the clover now.

      @ryanknorrlawncare  7 лет назад

      yeah sounds like it could just be the type that's holding you back some on the striping but keep working at it!

    Its been about a week and no growth of my new grass seed, I've been lightly watering every day, didn't use any top soil or peat moss, just put the seed on the soil and light packed it down with the back of my rake

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  7 лет назад

      Depending on the type of seed it can take a bit more time to germinate and start growing out of the ground.

    Your lawn is amazing!! How do I achieve carpet like thickness and grass as green as yours? When I cut my lawn with bag it always leaves a trail of clippings that end up looking like hay.

    Great job and great looking lawn Ryan, mine is recovering from all the fungus last year, too hot and too humid all the time. Going to cut it today and try to add some stripes then put down some crabgrass preventative and fert next week and I need to spray the weeds also. Keep at it !!

    I've been doing lawncare for 30 yrs. I've found that on the second cut or as you say double cut I raise my deck, The reason being I don't want to erase my first set of stripes. Hope this helps

    thanks man been pretty stressed about it it's a big lawn I put down 14 bags of it and told my client I won't charge if it doesn't help the lawn

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  7 лет назад

      It's really a product that does help some short term but more in the longer term with application after application. It doesn't quite have that "instant" gratification that quick release fertilizer would have. But over time the results are very good.

    I’d actually wondered if ppl went one pass with one blade height, & then switch it up or down to higher or lower for every other stripe haha! Can you believe how much trouble that would be?!

    The amount of land that’s available there is huge! If that were the UK you’d barely have a lawn and just have houses everywhere.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  7 лет назад +1

      I have not fertilized yet this year. But last year pretty much all milorganite except the final one of the year which was scotts winterizer. I also overseeded my front yard in the fall and used some starter fertilizer at that time.
