Balalaika, The twins, and Yukio are characters that make me think how life is often made by chance and they never got to have any freedom in the first place. All of the characters in Black Lagoon are not free but they do have the will to do something. Even existing is a will in my view.
Our (hopefully) next video is going to about something like that, if existing itself and confronting the absurdity of the world is the only way to continue
The twins arc wrecks me everytime I see it because it reminds me that there are kids born into horrible lives in this world and they have no chance of redemption. Rock tries but he realizes they were to far gone. That part where he gets pissed after the surviving one flashes him shakes me to my core. Having a stable childhood is important. Without it... well... 😢
Side note but Black Lagoon probably has one of the most diverse casts I've seen in a manga or anime. Never seen a Chinese-American, Romanian or a Columbian character outside of this show.
I like how Rock is one of the best Main Characters in anime. It's completely different from most main characters where the growth he undergoes isn't framed as a completely good thing. It's necessary evil at best. Also the fact that he has mature personality and is able to see how it views clash with those around him isn't something we get from the more immature main characters. Furthermore, the fact that Rock growth's is all emotional without him gaining any physical power to change is surroundings is a definite breath of fresh air. Finally, I think that the thing that makes Rock such a good main character is what Cheng says at 0:12. He actually doesn't *feel* like a main character, just another pawn in a much larger scheme. I think that's make Black Lagoon different from other anime because it's not just one character or faction controlling all the change. Each faction has their own goal and we can see how they constantly suppress Rock at each turn instead of just being the strong villians that inevitably lose. This makes Rock my second favorite main character after Keima from The World God Only Knows. Curious to see what other traits make a good main character or what other traits Rock has that makes him a good MC.
I think what you mentioned about him not feeling like a main character is one of the shows biggest strengths. He's essentially attempting to become what a main character is, someone who affects the world, not reacts to it, as he always had. He got a hint of it in the first episodes, but failed every other time. It makes the world he's fighting against feel powerful and true
@@ProfessorViral It makes the world he's fighting against feel powerful and true I think this point absolutely nails what makes a great main character. It actually feels like he's a part of the world instead the world being made for him where the story is driven by them achieving their goals. Seeing how the world pushes against the main character and how he responds to that makes him feel more like a *character* instead of the living embodiment of the plot. Of course, I can't really blame most fiction for how the main character be the plot since unlike most stories, Black Lagoon is more of an emotional adventure than a physical one. Rock isn't really traveling to different places or discovering the secrets of Roanpur, but it is living as a person in a much larger world. In a sense, Black Lagoon is similar to an episodic series although there is definitely progression in between arcs. Finally, you nailed it when you called Black Lagoon a character piece because it's more about the exploring the characters than exploring the plot or the setting. Ultimately, that's what makes make Rock feel more like a main *character* because it focuses on more on the world changes Rock instead of how Rock changes the world.
Your videos are the epitome of ''huh, I never thought of it this way. Guess it's true''. Especially the Black Lagoon and Vinland Saga ones, which are little gold nuggets. Cheers.
I have completed this series a few months ago and it's a masterpiece. The show is so dark and political that sometimes it's hard to understand the story
Love your statement about Revy hating herself. It reminded of the video series “there are no badass women in Black Lagoon.” Where the dude points out that the women are strong physically but emotionally and spiritually weak. I take it you’ve seen those RUclips videos?
you can be a badass while still hating yourself. If you want another great character for that would be tealc from stargate. Nothing I have done since turning against the goa'uld will make up for the atrocities I once committed in their name. Somewhere deep inside you you knew it was wrong, a voice you did not recognize screamed for you to stop. You saw no way out, it was the way things were, they could not be changed. You're trying to convince yourself the people you're hurting deserved it. You became numb to their pain and suffering, you learned to shut out the voice speaking against it. There's always a choice. Indeed there is. I chose to ignore it Yet you sit here now. I sit here, and I cannot imagine the day when I will forgive myself. Because it will never come. One day others may try to convince you they have forgiven you, that is more about them than you. For them, imparting forgiveness is a blessing. How do you go on? It is simple. You will never forgive yourself. Accept it. You hurt others, many others, that cannot be undone. You will never find personal retribution, but your life does not have to end. That which is right, just and true can still prevail. If you do not fight for what you believe in all may be lost for everyone else. But do not fight for yourself, fight for others, others that may be saved through your effort. That is the least you can do.
@@marxel4444 let’s agree to disagree here, There’s no denying that physically the main and secondary female characters are badass but on a metaphysical level there horrible people and they know that and hate themselves for it. But instead of trying to make any sort of change they keep giving in to the cycle of criminality.
@@taglover2313 they are badass. yes. but what does that have to be with beeing damaged or beeing horrible? thinking you can only be a badass when your mentaly normal is weird to say to begin with
Man, Takenaka is so interesting. By the end of his arc, he realizes he plays a role in society as well. Governments have always had and will always need enemies and rebels just as much as they need politicians and bureaucrats. Takenaka isn’t chasing a dream, but rather, is a pawn in the system like everyone else.
That’s why Takenaka stated he’s the “Enemy of the State.” The system in place gives the poor and disadvantaged limited options to foresee the path they want to create for themselves. They’re just pawns used by companies to make profit. After all, Takenaka is Communist so he believes it takes collective action to dismantle the system that’s benefited the rich. Ironically enough he was alone at some point protesting against the system.
I think this is a great philosophic essay on the show. The thought of true freedom being unattainable can be pretty scary no doubt. What we can do at least is to find personal freedom through navigating the circumstances of our lives.
Drifters said it's best "A man can endure the loss of dignity so long as his hunger is met. And on the other hand, hunger is nothing to a man who has dignity. When you take away both, when they're scared and have nothing to lose, that's when they rise up." In this video you're mainly conflating freedom with power, specifically power over other people. Not only is there also power of nature as well as power over yourself, but there's also a massive "you get what tolerate" aspect when it comes to exerting power over others. Ultimately, while Freedom and Power coexist however, one functions best as a means to an end and the other functions best as an end. Although they can serve both purposes. That being said power over nature creates the most freedom for people in general because it lowers the overall manpower required to achieve the same result. Of course, automation brings it's own issues with Power and Freedom. Control and Power over oneself grants the highest degree freedom, although it does require the bare minimum power of being able to make choices.
I think it is real, but limited to the moments where you can choose of your options. And yeah, e are doomed to make our own meaning and discover, or let it be pushed on us. I think thats the free will, that within conditions we have times of choicesand what we can do within limitations, which is not limitless but far more that most pople think and the effects bigger than people expect too. Not everything can e reached alone , but a fair bit can, especially with help and it still can make meaning and change in th world.
Sometimes the illusion of freedom or power is better than its reality.... Because once you have it...you can NEVER let it go.... You have to fight to maintain it. No matter how tiring, self destructive or pointless it is.
Black Lagoon is an anime that will stay in my head for a very long time. I decided to watch it because i was searching for dark noir-styled anime. But after i've watched it, i've realized that there is more to it than just a good vibe. I couldn't quite grasp it, but your videos clarified that for me. I absolutely love your videos, both about Black Lagoon and other anime. You're doing a great job so keep it up. 👍
No joke, as soon as this video ended, I got an ad for Huntington bank that said: "Freedom from surprise fees - Huntington." The amount of meta in that one sentence, considering your final summary on the topic of Freedom, is palpable. The very fact that I need to worry about surprise fees from someone on high, who controls all the money, means it is not true freedom. It is freedom that is given - Given by someone who holds the true idea of freedom. It is the illusion of Freedom, and we are not free.
These are the kinds of things I think about daily. In many situations like that, someone has the opportunity to release some of the supply of freedom, and instead lets out a drip and calls it generous. We can exist as we wish, within the bounds they have set
You said you ended this video with no clear message, but honestly, all of your Black Lagoon videos are incredibly philosophical, and I'd say this one was the most. All of the societal commentary and how it translates to Rock's character arc and journey really hits very well. You always increase my appreciation for an series that I already loved from my first view alone. This new video is probably my favorite.
Here's a thought I had: The feeling of freedom is dangerous. The experience of feeling free can occur separate from living in conditions of freedom. For example: A person who gives into a vice or addiction often feels free while giving into that addiction. It seems like many characters in BL had the same issue. Obviously Rock, when he felt free after seemingly escaping his corporate and mundane life or Takenaka when he thought for some idealized kind of change by revolution and last but not least Revy when she is being... Revy. The intoxicating feeling sells the Lie of Freedom to those people, ultimately trapping them in new systems and constrains. That feeling makes it hard to differentiate between freedom of choice/freedom from limitations and caprice. The leaf in the wind might feel free, but it is ultimately controlled and constrained by the wind. It seems like examining ones circumstances and actions is not only a prerequisite to gaining and maintaining freedom but also to avoid getting trapped. Well atleast that's what I concluded for myself right now. On a lighter note: I have to congratulate you on that summer drip. And as a dude who had long hair for many years, it is my obligation to encourage others to grow a lion mane.
So glad to see others saw such great depth to this series, I loved it from the start. No matter where the characters are in the world, they are still in the world.
i'm so happy that ur channel exists. as i've been diving into some older anime I missed people reaching for them as well, there's so much to be learned in the past but (in my algorythm predetermined bubble) it feels like we forgot it exists and are only devouring the newest coolest thing anxiously. to fill a whole (which I pretty much looked for watching these older anime but i found a lot more than that.)
I'm happy I can help in that journey. I've always just been drawn to whatever I'm feeling at that moment rather than what's new. I probably just like being a larger voice on something old than a small one on something new though
Life is so full of limitations and limited choices. Yet it's how we act or use our will to affect these choices that we have is how we can do something with that life we have.
Man I've watched black lagoon so many times over and over I've also read the manga. But I've never came across someone who could sum up the characters and the story of black lagoon so well as you do professor viral.
Thank you so much for this video! You've helped disillusion me of the lie that is freedom and point out that it is just a commodity, that none of us have any inherent value and can only earn it on the backs of others. I will take this lesson to heart and put as many other people under my boot as I can and deprive them of even a glimpse of freedom. Thank you.
I'm hoping this is sarcastic to make me see a flaw in my description, but just in case, that would be wrong. That state only exists because people harbor such a desire. Freedom is possible for everyone, but a select few people keep it as a commodity; the fault lies with those who do. To see this and then decide to be the same is plain wrong
@@ProfessorViral My post was sarcastic. I have no interest in ruling someone else's life. That said, I don't think that there will ever come a time when humans won't try to rule each other. All it takes is a dedicated few to proactively try to stop any threat to their entrenched ideologies to render a change nearly impossible.
Honestly your description of Tear Drop to Earth fits really well. That track occasionally comes back in my mind randomly and honestly does have me thinking of just sitting on the sea and enjoying it. Great Video and these Black Lagoon Vidoes always adds to me why this anime after many years of originally watching it still stays my absolute favorite.

I think it’s all about perspective, and perspective isn’t fact. Just because something may seem unobtainable, that doesn’t mean it’s an illusion. Such as control. That’s said, there should be no shame, no judgement, no evil in striving for those kinds of things. The only problem being is that sometimes..you just can’t. It’s not that life is cruel and meaningless overall, it’s just not for everyone. That’s just how humanity operates. Humanity creates these issues, not life. You look out into nature, you don’t see fires, hear explosions, see chaos, or even “peace” at least not our definition. It’s all a synchronized balance that we as a species never developed maturely enough to accept to live by.
Ironically, true freedom is probably the act of letting go and to not chase things. Even if you're able to get the thing you've been chasing for, the dependency will always keep you bound.
Thats where being completely unbound becomes odd; would it lead to us never progress again? Since we have nothing pushing us, there's no reason to change
@@ProfessorViral I'm not religious but I do like to look into a part of Christianity to answer that. Something that the Bible teaches (I can't remember the verse or if it was from the actual Bible or a modified American Bible) is that you should not be tempted because God does not tempt, He only guides. It is said that to fall to temptation only leads to desire, and then to sin. What I take from it is, we already have a natural progression in place, obviously a boring progression that only exists because a part of nature and life is sustainability and multiplication, however it's actually temptation and desire that makes our natural progression boring because we expect more out of life than what we should. Finding a meaning to an otherwise unmeaningful, coincidental existence is what bounds us. We want life to be more than what it actually is. It's the curse that our intelligence provided us. So really what I consider true freedom is simply to be unburdened. We can still progress towards having money and nice things, but it should only be on the premise that we can have it and not that we desire it, and to be ok without it. The moment you desire something it can potentially lead you onto a path of desiring more (kind of like people being addicts). If we keep our lifestyles I think there's only 2 acts of freedom we posses: to fall in love and to die.
Thanks for your analysis. It is nice to see a fellow man of culture talking about what he loves. It opens my eyes, . . more and allow me to see from more perspectives.
But the same rules in Roanapur apply to developed nations. The illusion of civility is just much stronger in developed nations, people still get disappeared when they get in the way of big business deals in 1st world countries, the only difference is the stronger kayfabe that it doesn't happen and the stronger incentives to do it far less often because each citizen is now more productive and a bigger loss to the common treasury that every bigwig draws from.
how eerie i had the exact same idea when i finished my cyberpunk 2077 playthrough .i went with the nomad ending because there was no saving anyone in night city no matter how many gangs and psychopaths i eliminated there was always twenty more to fill the void the last thing i did was to try and make things right for Judy and the mox but by eliminating the Tigerclaw bosses things fell apart for them .the nomads in my view where the only truly free people not tethered to night city .
Were forced to sign a contract that already puts us at a disadvantage. We follow it, but interpret it in different ways. Freedom is based on how often we can enact our own will without any sign of manipulation.
I believe that Rock isn't as you have presented him, at least not in the manga. He continues to do things his way and eventually manages to save or rescue people into a sort of a better life. Read the manga to discover the characters further.
nothing to do with the video but I feel like black lagoon just pushes your thinking and questions what you really want makes me come back and think about it if I feel stuck, if I wanna confirm something, or if I have the feeling I’m wrong
Making other people enforce your will is not a component of freedom in many senses but is a form of influence, not being actively obstructed by others does
i adore black lagoon, but since the series has only a half proper closure, ive been left wanting more forever and probably will continue to. i can only hope that one day, i can get a definitive ending, with some true change for everyone involved.

And while the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss, the President of the United States, who ships more merchandise in a day than I do in a year - sometimes it's embarrassing to have his fingerprints on the guns. Sometimes he needs a freelancer like me to supply forces he can't be seen supplying. So. You call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I'm a necessary evil.

We all end up serving something. A god, nation or ideology, what's left is anarchy? Anarchy is just ones service to impulse, emotion. One can claim that our ability to choose who we serve is freedom, however, doesn't our upbringing and past experiences directly impact our greater decisions later in life? Possibly.
While it is true that you may never have absolute freedom as there will always be circumstances outside your control, you do always have a choice. While the anime was short lived, Rock straddles the line between being a criminal who is willing to assist in illegal or illicit activities, but still retains his morality in always trying to do whatever will results in the greater good. Revy, Balalaika, Roberta, Yukio...they all could have turned away at any moment. It may not have made their lives better or happier, but the choice was always there and theirs to take.
If we accept that we can not find a place where we are free as realists, then that's probably the best we can do. I enjoy torturing myself as an idealist though
I remember watching Black Lagoon for the first time and thinking "Damn, I really like all this action. I already liked quentin tarantino, but this is mixed with the good parts of Micheal Bay." Now, thanks to you and thanks to a rewatch... I now understand why this show is such a masterpiece: You can watch it completely drunk and enjoy all the action But holy s#it, there's so much more behind all that action And sidenote: I really enjoy your clothing choices in your last video's. I have booted up "existing to exist", but forgot I still had this one tabbed. So watch this one first. Now, the thing Rock hated? And tshirt about growing up when you are talking about meaning? I like it!
You say towards the end of the video that Black Lagoon is unfinished and while that is true, it should be noted that the manga does continue past the point where the anime leaves off. I'd like to see you discuss what happens in the later books sometime. In case your worried about cost, there's sites where you can read them for free.
“Freedom is a lie” That would imply that the concept of freedom had some sort of truth-evaluation associated with it. It does not. Freedom is a concept - the idea that one is free to do whatever one wants, without any consequences. Obviously in a civilized society nobody has the absolute freedom to do whatever they want. I can’t kill someone because I don’t like them. I can’t take someone’s property without their consent, etc. 100% freedom would result in 100% anarchy - there would be no laws, no societal rules, and no systemic punishments for anything. Human society is not capable of living this way in any sustained fashion. I think it has to do with the fact that people see freedom to be something fundamentally good, but it's not that simple. There is a beautiful German fairy tale book.... About a meerkat who lives very well in the zoo, but it is also boring... one day an earthquake happens and he is free... but out there he has to live and fight for himself.... The search for freedom is a heavy burden....
I appreciate you not just saying the surface level answer of capitalism, when discusing the issue of freedom and power in relation to society and hierarchy. These issues have been round long before Capitalism and will exist even after, a as of now hypothetical better system is found and implemented. Although I personally believe you only skimmed a bit below the surface as to how freedom and power relate to society and hierarchy. And then the questions of what happens to humans, if we where to actually be unbound from those constraints.
@@ProfessorViral Don't sell yourself too short, most people can only go surface level for these sorts of discussions, and it gets worse with topics relating to such complex and often divisive concepts, let alone how they relate with one another. And this includes some well read and smart people. I only really mentioned that there is further discussion and insights relating to the topics of how Freedom relates to Society and Hierarchy, because I believe you would be able further insights on the topic.
I've been wanting to watch that one for a while, but could never find it officially somewhere. Every site which lists it comes to a region lock or an error. Its sad because it very much seems like something I'd enjoy
@@ProfessorViral yeah it's an enjoyable show It's old and isn't that popular so yeah you gotta kinda pirate it if you wanna watch or get the DvD or blue ray
I'm unsure. I believe there is, but I have no answer myself. Nature is cruel and harsh, we and everything we created emerged from such a thing, and thus it seems our default state is one of equal harshness. My bet would be that across different times and societies, we have found what has and hasn't worked. By isolating the true cases of despair in those cases, we could try and create something better. For example, despite being communist in name, the Soviet Union experienced the same greed as an capitalist society. It's something which helps make Roanapur as awful as it is. As such, we could argue greed is something which ruins societies, not necessarily the overarching principles we may commonly point to. From there, we have to work to exhaust the list. But this is long, hard work which requires at it's heart the destabilization of long held beliefs and systems. It's something a single humans life can never fully know, and as such, is exceptionally hard to dedicate oneself too. So, I think the first step is to be aware of such things, to learn and teach others so the resistance to change can be dropped. That is all I can say, without stretching to presumption in my youth. I hope to one day have a more complete answer
@@ProfessorViral well i wanna be positive by saying that the first step to solving a problem is realizing you have but in this world right now i dont think anybody is going to realize
How is the manga for Black Lagoon? It keeps the quality after what the anime adapted, or it starts getting worse? I want to know what happened to the main cast past the anime. It might be just me, but I feel like the Bloodhound OVA was very confusing and convoluted in comparison with the first 2 seasons. It has some nice character progression and themes, but the storyline was all over the place and the action scenes even more over the top than before. Did they change the source material massively, or it's just a more complicated arc overall that wasn't paced well?
Late response, but the manga is incredible and an easy top ten of all time for me. Reading the manga made me realize that this anime is actually a nearly perfect adaptation and it covers nearly all of the core story in the manga while skipping over only mostly negligible information. Read the manga, dude. It's fucking amazing.
Love your content as always, especially Black Lagoon (one of my favorite shows). Looking forward to an exploration of Texhnolyze. Probably the bleakest anime I’ve ever watched.
Ultimately being human means being weak, and being weak means a lack of freedom, so humans have been created without having access to freedom in mind, that's why most likely humanity will never know true freedom before it becomes extinct Cooperation can make one stronger, even multiply their strength, but that's still artificial strength, it's not something that belongs to you. Same thing with weapons, you can use a gun or a knife but that's still not your own strength, it can be taken away at any time, and without any strength you can't protect your freedom from those that wish to take it

I chose to ignore it
Yet you sit here now.

When you take away both, when they're scared and have nothing to lose, that's when they rise up."
In this video you're mainly conflating freedom with power, specifically power over other people.
Replace "freedom" with "will to power" and you got yourself a pretty cool interpretation of Nietzsche with guns and palm trees.

Thank you, I'm happy I was able to help provide some clarity : D
Its less good pretty sure, but noir is a pretty fun anime and also decent characters.
Jormungand hit me similarly to Black Lagoon. It seems a bit silly in the beginning, but when you find out what's been going on= it's a mood.
No joke, as soon as this video ended, I got an ad for Huntington bank that said: "Freedom from surprise fees - Huntington."
The amount of meta in that one sentence, considering your final summary on the topic of Freedom, is palpable.
In the words of George Carlin, "You have no rights, you have privileges given by people who are better than you."

Oh didn't expect someone to talk about black lagoon, such an underrated masterpiece
For sure, I've made a lot of videos on it, and it's had enough depth I've never felt I've simply been repeating myself or stretching a point
Here's a thought I had: The feeling of freedom is dangerous. The experience of feeling free can occur
separate from living in conditions of freedom. For example: A person who gives into a vice or addiction often feels
free while giving into that addiction. It seems like many characters in BL had the same issue. Obviously Rock, when he felt free
after seemingly escaping his corporate and mundane life or Takenaka when he thought for some idealized kind of change by revolution
and last but not least Revy when she is being...
And as a dude who had long hair for many years,
it is my obligation to encourage others to grow a lion mane.
So glad to see others saw such great depth to this series, I loved it from the start. No matter where the characters are in the world, they are still in the world.
"No matter where the characters are in the world, they are still in the world" is a fantastic way to put it, I love that

I am disturbed by that you don't think freedom comes before all else.
Assasins vs templars
Thank you so much for this video! You've helped disillusion me of the lie that is freedom and point out that it is just a commodity, that none of us have any inherent value and can only earn it on the backs of others. I will take this lesson to heart and put as many other people under my boot as I can and deprive them of even a glimpse of freedom. Thank you.
What a fucking idiotic takeaway.
My brain is going to new Grey areas every time I see your videos. Amazing content, sorry for not having more to say.
Hey, no issue, thank you for saying anything at all : )
I think it’s all about perspective, and perspective isn’t fact.
@@penndavi281 So you can only safely have the things you don't actually want. Feels pretty cruel in the end.

Anime that could have been so much greater than anime's like death note or Monster
It is not about being free in my opinion, but finding a place to belong instead in a predictable world with no thrill.

“Freedom is a lie”
That would imply that the concept of freedom had some sort of truth-evaluation associated with it.
I was only able to skim a bit bellow unfortunately. I'm hoping to one day be much more of an expert to put together something more compressive
@@ProfessorViral Don't sell yourself too short, most people can only go surface level for these sorts of discussions, and it gets worse with topics relating to such complex and often divisive concepts, let alone how they relate with one another. And this includes some well read and smart people.

What’s the music in the background?
also sorry for commenting again but, after you show how bad the world of black lagoon is, is there really any way to fix or amend it?

Ultimately being human means being weak, and being weak means a lack of freedom, so humans have been created without having access to freedom in mind, that's why most likely humanity will never know true freedom before it becomes extinct
Cooperation can make one stronger, even multiply their strength, but that's still artificial strength, it's not something that belongs to you. Same thing with weapons, you can use a gun or a knife but that's still not your own strength, it can be taken away at any time, and without any strength you can't protect your freedom from those that wish to take it
