  • My son and I took an Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) trip to Japan in celebration of my son's college graduation in June 2024. We also extended our trip to Hiroshima, Japan as part of a post-trip experience. Here we had one of our most memorable encounters in Japan as we got to hear the personal story of Teruko Yahata. She was 8 years old at the time of the bombing of Hiroshima and survived to tell her story as well as what happened to her family and friends. It was one of the most heartfelt stories I have ever personally heard and we were truly fortunate as well as privileged to be able to listen to her recant the memories of the day of the bombing and subsequent difficult days that followed. There are now fewer people who have survived this tragedy and are able to share about the experience. Teruko Yahata's worry is that with each survivor's passing there will be one less person to tell the story and advocate for a world that does not use nuclear weapons. Her story is truly amazing and greatly inspiring for all of us to live in a world of peace. Certainly an outstanding ambassador of world peace!
