The Hidden Meaning of the X-MEN's Costumes! || NerdSync

  • Marvel's X-Men stand for unity with humans yet individuality as mutants. Their costumes play a key role in reflecting that idea. When Professor X created the team, every member from Cyclops to Jean Grey had near identical blue and yellow uniforms. But as the team expanded to include mutants like Wolverine, Storm, and Nightcrawler, the costumes shifted to allow for more diversity and range. And even though the Xmen's costumes aren't reflected well in the movies, the comic books can shine some light on the hidden meaning behind the designs and iconic X symbol!

      Do you prefer Cyclops with a mask like Astonishing Cyclops or his earlier appearances or Cyclops without a mask like his Jim Lee design from the 90s ( I’m not fully sure if he’s wearing a mask in that design ) ?

      @@comicbookking3446Definitely Jim Lee Cyclops from the 90s. It looks like a military uniform with the belt full of pockets, the visor connected to the uniform with a collar piece and the short buckled gloves.

    Something I just thought of! The X-logo on their costumes helps the public visually see which mutant is a part of the X-Men team. Probably a little more efficient than Spidey having to whip out his Avengers card to prove he's on the roster. However, the drawbacks might include someone easily impersonating a member of the X-Men just by sewing an X onto their costume and committing crimes. Yet, being a card-carrying mutant seems like even more separation from humans than some would like. IS THERE NO RIGHT ANSWER?!

      NerdSync mmm maybe not easily at first. the xmen members could check the status of a mutant and see whether they're active, off duty and so on. of course one would have to actively check the system for this information. then even if they sort the logo, it could be double checked

    • @phantom1592
      @phantom1592 7 лет назад +1

      I would agree with that. The X-logo makes it obvious who are X-men... and who are Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. It gives them a logo that says 'We're not ALL dangerous and evil... The X-MEN are here to help!" as opposed to just a superpowered brawl in the middle of the street. It isn't just Mutant vs. Human... it's Mutant vs. Mutant too.

    • @kendra_t

      the 'uniform' vs 'costume' debate is from Wolverine: First Class. I can't remember the issue number, but it was from the one where Cyclops returns to the team and involves being on an island.

  • @UncleBlerd
    @UncleBlerd 7 лет назад +49

    So is it no longer canon that one of the reasons for the colorful uniforms was so when people first saw them, they would initially think "superhero" not mutant?
    I could have sworn Cyclops said just as much when the team returned to individual styles and color uniforms in Astonishing X-men #1!

    • @kendra_t
      @kendra_t 7 лет назад +25

      he did say as much in Astonishing.
      literally:
      Wolverine: here come the tights...
      Cyclops: superheroes wear costumes, Logan, and frankly, all the black militery gear is making people nervous.
      from Joss Whedon, who was also involved with writing the first movie with the line about yellow spandex. xD which is it, Joss?!

    I think that when discussing whether the 'X' Symbol as a label is good or bad for Mutants it's important to distinguish between Mutants and X-Men, the former being a species of people and the latter being a specific group made up of that species that performs humanitarian acts. You don't earn or choose to be a mutant but you do earn and choose to be labelled an X Man/Woman. Sadly, as we have seen in the real world, a fearful and suspicious public has trouble telling the difference between different groups within minorities and avoiding generalisation. That's what makes Magneto's Brotherhood so danferous for thier own kind...

    Agreed that the X might be connected to the star of David, but I personally think that it is not. (I do not know if it is confirmed by the creators or just a theory, but I see it in a different way.)
    Think about it, what are the X-Men? Mutants, okay we know. Superheroes, cool, knew that as well. But to me, more than anything, the X-Men are a team.
    Think about sports (yes, the mythical thing that people talk about often involving balls or something. I don't know, as I said, it's just a myth.)
    In team based sports, you may say that the reason they wear a uniform is to differentiate the two teams, and I agree, but there's also the feeling of comradery.Its normal of humans to feel sympathetic towards those who look like us, that's part of why anthropomorphic animal movies are so popular. They look and act like us, we are hardwired to feel sympathy and we feel more willing to work with / help them. That's why uniforms are so crucial in sports.
    And the second reason why they wear uniforms is because of the insignia on their chests. Look up some goal commemorations in soccer. They often kiss the symbol on their chest, they want to show that they did it for love for their team. They didn't do it for personal glory, it was for the team, for the greater cause. The symbol isn't just a symbol, it's an entire society of people with similar "somethings."
    look at the fantastic 4. They all wear the 4 on their uniform. More than the blue color, THIS shows the world that they are together. Mess with one, you mess with them all.
    Look at the avengers now. Yeah they are all different, but they all wear the little A insignia somewhere (at least in the MCU they do). And what does Cap do in civil war when he goes rogue after Zemo? He removes the insignia. He's not part of the team anymore, at least not for now. He does this not only to show Tony and everyone else how right he thinks he is, to the point where he would turn against his friends, but it is my headcanon that he does that also to not damage the name of the Avengers. Wearing that tiny A and doing something that will tarnish his name will be awful for the Avengers, and he knows that the Avengers need to be on good graces with the public. He casts away the symbol because for this mission, he is not part of a team.
    Now I've never experienced the X-Men outside of the movies (comics are expensive!) but I am sure that you can find an example of someone going rogue (aaaaah *finger guns*) and not using the X symbol, even if only for one mission. They probably don't mention it, but if I were writing a comic and decided to have Cyclops go on his own, against the teams wishes or whatever, I would not have him wear the symbol. Maybe the uniform because that's what he's used to fight in, but definitely not the iconic X.
    More than "we are all the same," to me the X symbol is a message of "we are one."

      Redchocobo Actually, several long standing members have worn costumes without the x symbol, at least for a time. Angel, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Gambit, Havok, Storm, and Shadowcat are some of the names that easily come to mind. Now they have had multiple costumes over the years but I do know some of those costumes did not feature the x symbol.

    To a minority group, visibility is important. What can be seen as setting us apart is often what allows people to see us in the first place. This is not necessarily true for someone who is, say, black, but for the LGBT analogue the X-Men have routinely gone for in the last 4 decades, it's really important. People only really started to change their minds about same-sex marriage when they started to see how present gay individuals were. And now we're doing the same dance with trans individuals.
    Mutants, like many of the groups they stand in for, are already separate from society. They're--and we are--a minority that is hated, feared, and often treated as a mythical construct. The major difference is your average gay or black person can't level a city block, but as a parallel, it makes sense.

    I feel like, while having unifying colors and/or themes is a good thing for the X-men, either the artists or the team themselves are sort of shooting them in the foot, as yellow typically creates unease in high concentrations.

    The X insignia also was used as a communications link among members, so there was also a practical side to having that as part of their uniforms. The X could also distinguish them from other teams that were hostile.

    By contrast, I think Cyclops is the only X-Man that never truly deviated that much from his original costume as a teen
    Which shows that he was the most loyal towards Professor Xavier and his vision, showing that he didn’t really have a unique personality other than that
    Which is why in his revolutionary run his new red costume gains so much attention, as he not only discards his previous status as the X-Men’s leader, he also throws away Xavier’s ideology to start crafting his own

    Not only the costumes, but even the X-Men's civvy clothes will somrtimes have random X symbols like its a friggin clothing line. I love seeing X logos on Nightcrawler's sweat pants, or Storm's swim suit, or Cyclops's underwear (I may have made that one up but don't tell me he wouldn't).
    I like that the costumes are distinctly different while most share the logo. I think its just enough for each member to have an iconic look and not going too far and sharing the same designs.
    They differ from teams like the Avengers in that they are generally recruited from non-super hero lives and trained as a super hero group rather than being seperate heroic entities that come together occasionally.

    I always thought of the X-Men as a community that didn't exist simply for the sake of battle like the Avengers or Defenders, but a makeshift family brought together by their "otherness." There's an obvious parallel to The Fantastic Four, in how they are not superheroes first, and are defined by their domesticity. Their home is also a school, like the FF is a family living in a Lab. Also X is not simply an unknown but undefined, which is why it's also worn by the branch groups like X-Factor (The Government Team version), and the more radical wing, X-Force.
    *Xavier has worn his uniform on many occasions in the field.*

    I like to think that the X symbol and costumes are supposed to show that they can be trusted, in the same way people trust the Avengers. I see it in the same way as the Legion flight rings from Legion of Superheroes. Yeah, it's a nifty ring, but it's more than just a ring that gives you flight; it's a symbol. It gives sense of individuality and unity, as well as shows a symbol people can get behind. Sure, only mutants can be X-Men, but the idea is that non-mutants can trust them when they wear the X, because it shows that the ones with the X are the good guys and that mutants can be good. That's how I always saw it: a way to show prestige and unity, but also be open to others about equality and heroism. It's why I love the X-Men and the Legion: you can wear whatever you want so long as you have the ring or the X.

  • @Wizard_Of_Self
    @Wizard_Of_Self 7 лет назад +1

    +NerdSync About why they might wear the X even if it could do more harm than good because they're separating themselves with an X. And also how Xavier's intentions might be contradictory by labeling them as separate with an X. As you brought up the X is there to show the public "We are mutant and we are proud. Notice us and the good we do." I think it's there for that very reason. They are forcing the public to first accept them as being mutants for their abilities and traits before they will conform to society and wear normal clothes to fit in. Some people in X-Men obviously don't like mutants and wish that they would just disappear into normal society. It's a strain to their brains to even think that there are these "freaks" with crazy powers who aren't like us but still classify as human. These people just want the mutants to leave and disappear because they're afraid (even if that fear comes out in the form of anger). So by wearing the X the mutants force these people to first accept them as being mutant and recognize that they aren't bad, and then maybe after that happens then they will take the X off because they also realize that it puts a wedge between them and the non-mutants. I love your videos by the way! I love hearing what you think about all these characters and the deeper meanings in comics. Looking at comic books from these psychological, sociological, moral, and ethical views is actually quite fun to me so it's cool to hear your thoughts on all of it too! Keep posting great videos man!

    I like how their costumes/uniforms are all different, yet still match each other's. It seems like there was a central style, but like you said, there is a hint of individuality. Bishop with the yellow and blue with a red scarf. Cannonball with the yellow and blue and I don't know what the style is called, but ... cowboy type of gloves where the gloves cone at the forearms. Cable wore the uniform for a while and it had two horizontal straps with two exes as opposed to one like cyclops'.
    Deadpool rocked a uniform which artists intentionally made it seem like he made himself.

    I dunno, I kind of like the New X-Men designs by Frank Quitely. Sure, they're all black and yellow jackets, but each X-Man does something unique with that look (not that they all looked good admittedly). It fit the tone of that series and worked well in showing that the X-Men should really be more like a civil rights group/social movement that do superheroics than a superhero team. I could go into a whole rant about the thematic implications of how the X-Men are portrayed in that comic and how their wardrobe reflects that. Or maybe it's just because I love Grant Morrison (got volume 3 of the ultimate collection for Christmas can't wait to crack it open).

    I've always thought that the X Men were knowingly fighting for a peace and equality that they probably would never get to experience in their lifetime. The nobility of that, added with the sacrifices, danger, and pain that they willingly took on to stand up and literally fight for the acceptance and equality of ALL mutants in the future , is what made them heroes to me. Their abilities just dictated which mutants could defend them as a people.... I may be wrong, but I assumed for every Wolverine or Cyclops there were hundreds or even thousands of mutants who couldn't defend themselves, because their mutations were either only physical, or whatever power they had couldn't be utilized for combat or protection.

    One thing about when when their costumes were all the same, at a distance it would be easy to mistake one for another. By allowing them each to have their own costume it helps them respond with aid to the one who needs it faster.

    Yes! I love this video. This topic resonates with me as I play a game that where I am a member of a group. Our group has colors to identify use, but not a required uniform. And to become a member you must go through a trial. After the trial you are rewarded with the group's identifying symbol. This is just like the topic you presented.

    I loved this episode!! I just wanted to add that the unifying "X" can be used against them, when they say "look at us! And what we are doing" they leave themselves open to other mutants (magneto and other such villains) using that symbol and doing unjust things under that banner. This has been a plot point before, and I'm sure it was in your script, but I just wanted to point that out. (Have a nice day)

    I like that this video brought up the question as to why the X-Men wore costumes, but it only scratches the surface on the subject:
    - In-canon reason for Charles Xavier choosing super hero-esque costumes is that he wanted them to appear to the world as super heroes and not freaks of nature. See Grant Morrison's run for more on this.
    - I always wanted a canon explanation for this, but notice that his first wave of mutants are all good looking white kids. It would be nice to point out there he chose the most anglo of mutants simply so that he could open the door for mutants of all colors (being that it was the 60's)
    - I'm not entirely sure of why there is a color choice of Blue and Gold, but the combination is very authoritative -- almost police-like.
    - It should also be noted that when the X-Men graduate, they earn the right to modify their costumes.

    1:15 But Professor X has worn a uniform of sorts - there was one time he'd regained the ability to walk and went into battle side-by-side with the others, only to realise this wasn't a smart move because he tried to give orders as well as Cyclops and Storm (the ones the group are used to following) and it got confusing, so he went back to being the high-command/behind-the-scenes guy. Maybe the real reason we usually see Xavier in his civvies is just because he doesn't tend to be on the front line in the X-men's battles.

  • @Wolfkiller
    @Wolfkiller 7 лет назад +1

    I think the X is closer symbolically to a police badge (what a police badge SHOULD symbolize, anyways...) than WWII era star of David. it didn't just signify they were mutants, but mutants who are sworn to protect humanity regardless of their hated.

    I've always thought the losing of the masks in the original cosumes as the characters developed into their own was also meaningful. Not only is it a sign of the character coming into their own but its good PR for a team. Telling the general public "Here is my face you can trust me" Except for Cyclops (who fears his own power) and Wolverine (who does whatever he wants).

    The thing about the uniform is that it is for the X-men themselves, not any mutant or member of the team. This is a select military group that has a uniform for missions but they all still have their own civilian clothes which show their uniqueness and personality fine.

    Curious as to your thoughts on racial diversity or diversity of sexual orientation in the X-Men. For a group that uses race and queer metaphor it lacks a lot of that representation from their main players. Do you think it undermines the argument of the X-Men or does it put people of privilege into the shoes of what marginalized groups experience?

    In Winter war 1939-40 the Finnish defense was plagued by severe equipment and
    munitions shortages. Many Finnish soldiers did not even have uniforms, and
    simply wore their regular winter clothing with ad-hoc military tags.

  • @inexfan89

    Another "problem" is that not every X-Man has that logo as part of the costume. Overall I like the diversity in costumes but overall it sometimes comes across a little messy. Especially when you're a new reader. That's why I love the first new costumes of the original 5 X-Men in Bendis' All-New X-Men run. They are different in color which expresses the difference in the members but it clearly shows they belong together as a team. In my opinion the perfect mix. And the logo isn't just a patch or something. it looks more like an emblem that can't be copied that easily.

  • @dechha1981
    @dechha1981 7 лет назад

    Maybe it's because the first version of the X-Men i ever heard of was the 90s cartoon, but I prefer the more diverse costumes. The black suits and the black-and-yellow suits look too... uniform. It's easier to tell them apart if they look different.
    Besides, some mutants have different physical needs than others (the ones with wings need backless shirts, the ones that shoot energy need holes in wherever etc) so their clothes would have to be custom anyway.

  • @darkhero-3097
    @darkhero-3097 7 лет назад

    This might. It have much to do with the video, but I remember someone once mentioned that Spider-Man's suit is great for two reasons: 1, it's bright and dynamic because he started out as a performer, and 2, if he wore anything but bright colors he'd be terrifying. Think about it: a man creepily crawling on walls shooting a mysterious fluid from his wrists and wearing a full-body suit that covers any skin. That'd be scary.

    I love the x-men's costumes and really hated that the movies didn't do anything with them until Apocalyps. I always figured them a symbol of gratuation in the sense that the hero wearing their own colour scheme had gratuated from Xavier's school. The yellow and blue/blackish "trainee" costume was worn by almost all young mutants at the school when they started, the orignial x-men, the new mutants, the young x-men etc. Older muntants like the international team never wore them, however when Kitty joined the team she too wore the "trainee" costume.
