We I've lived in Glasgow for72 years and I have just learned facts I hadn't known before. Thanks, and I have subscribed to learn more about the City of my birth, well they say it's never too late to learn.
My wife and I love Glasgow and try and visit as often as possible and I can thoroughly recommend the city chambers visit, George sq to me is the heart of Glasgow and it’s where I gravitate toward my wife on the other hand loves the people’s park and that’s where she goes to feel totally relaxed and enjoy her morning walks, greetings from Ireland,
Loved this one. I'm eighty and live in Australia now but still remember my daddy helping me onto those lions. Was there when our late queen paid her first visit after her coronation. Follow all your vids.
Great video Dave. I'm willing to bet that this is the episode with the least distance travelled, this not being a Postie life is showing through. Joking aside another fascinating episode and I have indeed sat on a bench to eat my Greggs on many occasion.
I have been terribly un productive for videos since I left RM but training courses, job interviews and holidays have left me with less video time than working every day :-D I filmed some of this episode on the way back from a job interview which is why I had no bike with me. Thank you again for your support mate, Dave.
I would dedicate a statue to Dr June Almedia, a Glaswegian scientist who discovered corona viruses in the 1960s. She was from Denniston and couldn't afford to go to uni.
Amazing video as always, love the work you do. Cliché to say but for a modern statue on the square I'd have to say the big yin himself. A man of great talent and charity that's carried the spirit of Glasgow around the world with him, and deserves a long long rest. Can't say he'd deserve the pigeon poo though
I'm late but, MR BILLY CONNOLLY, shouldn't even be a question, let's not wait until he passes before he gets properly recognised in his own toon, great stuff as always though, Glashu go bragh.
He's there are Murals of Billy Connolly around Glasgow but NO Statue There is NOT a Scot living or Dead who deserves a Statue in George Square more than BILLY CONNOLLY,,,End Of
I was born at 99 Dundas street just around the corner. Spent much of my childhood at the square when it had lots of grass. Thanks for the memoriesQQQ (May)🇨🇦
You missed one statue. At the top of the city chambers there is a Statue of Liberty, most people don't realise it's there. Have a look, you will see it.
Just found this video, which I enjoyed very much. Thanks for that. At the foot of the flag staff over the entrance to the city chambers is our very own statue of liberty. There is an even better one over the entrance to the people's palace.
Thanks for the kind words and I am glad you enjoyed it. I am going to sound like an annoying know it all but the statue on the city chambers is not Liberty, its Veritas, the Goddess of truth and virtue. I believe the statue on the Peoples Palace is Minerva. Glasgow has only one true statue of Liberty and she stands in Queens park; ruclips.net/video/wfgPsdVZnd4/видео.htmlsi=4RSbhWO0Iqh7yEbJ
@@AstonishingGlasgow I stand corrected and thanks for the Info. Do you remember that stupid Lord Mayor we had, who wanted to play chess with the statues on George Square to bring it into the 21st century, which was going to cost us millions?
Brace yourself for this. George square is to be fenced off this January and if the reports are to be believed it will not be open to the public again for two years. The statues are being removed and a water feature and play area added to the square.
@@AstonishingGlasgow You have got to be having a laugh. A play area? The paedos being released from prison early will think all their Christmas' have come at once. This will give them somewhere to hang out. Ladbrooks will be taking bets to see how long it takes to be covered in pigeon poop. As for the water feature? We'll see how long it takes before it gets vandalized.
NB: I was ASTONISHED to see what’s been done to the ‘oldest house’ in Glasgow High St- Instead of being dated at 1471 (I think) Now it looks like it belonged to Easternouse - 1960s…… WHO did that, and WHY?
Good luck,I hope you get the job,I seen in freakbewk you were initially planning something else, but handy since you were @ interview nearby.Good stuff as usual. To me,the square has never felt the same since they got rid of the red tarmac on the deck there. Weird! Statue of YOU! for educational services. I've never heard polis in Glesga called 'bobbies',it's usually a very word beginning with a B and ending in an S. 😆 The size thing was fascinating btw. Maybe have to doing MY measuring at night though!😉
James Watt was born in my home town of Greenock on the Firth of Clyde. There is a statue of him there, and the docks are called the James Watt Docks. He's a very big deal in Greenock!
Thanks Dave for another amazing video. I was always told to see Glasgow at its best, always look up (at the architecture). Alas you have proven this to be wrong as we would never see the likes of the fascinating calibration gauges or the plaque to the victims of Hiroshima.
I’ll know if there’s a little crowd around that measuring plaque when I seek it out that they are fellow subscribers 😂 Id vote for a statue of Andy Murray 😉
"...he moved to Edinburgh for some reason..." Ah, there speaks Glasgow! In the fifties, we learned the poem "The Burial of Sir John Moore in Corunna"---but not a hint that he had been a Scot. Ah, British Empire propaganda! Thank you for this.
Definitely the Big Yin, I'm sure he find it hilarious that he'd be getting shat on by seagulls for eternity. Can't believe I've never noticed the measurements, will need to have a nosy.
Its fair to say that almost all of Glasgow's trade (and every other industrialised city of the time) in the 1700's involved slave trading in some way. Im not even close to being qualified to discuss it fully but remember that there was also a lot of people in Glasgow who opposed slavery and helped to get it banned.

Brilliant Dave. Keep them coming and we'll hopefully catch you on a tour. Thank you.

I'm late but, MR BILLY CONNOLLY, shouldn't even be a question, let's not wait until he passes before he gets properly recognised in his own toon, great stuff as always though, Glashu go bragh.
There are huge murals of him all over Glasgow.
I made an episode about the murals; ruclips.net/video/x6JCYRkKCQE/видео.html

Is the building still there?
Fabulous journey!👍👏👌
Resident Historian, I love your history lessons. Thank you for a walk about the square.
Easy one ... Billy Connolly should have a statue. Great wee stories ...keep up the good work. 😊
Fantastic video How about doing one on the Battle on battlefield Road
I started filming this episode last year but the story got bigger and I need to film some more locations to be able to tell it.
Brilliant videos
wonderful my dude, very well informed of you and always a joy to watch and learn
I cant wait until they finally spruce the square up! Its let down so badly by the state of the paving
James Watt, truly an astonishing Greenock lad.
Very interesting, thank you. Sorry they removed some of the trees. 😢
Fr Toronto an reincarnated as following King James of Scotts. Very nice we'll done 💯 Loved it

You might want to watch episode 24 😉 ruclips.net/video/wfgPsdVZnd4/видео.htmlsi=G_8UzACEk7ekiEhS
I hadn't seen that episode.@@AstonishingGlasgow

I think the provans lordship looks great now. It now has the lime (?) rendered finish it would have had when new.
Very interesting. Thanks

What about a statue of Jim Kerr
Thanks!
Great video mate when's the next walk planned ? Cheers
Thanks. Announcement coming soon about the next walk.
Alex Ferguson should have a statue on the square.
I must see what is in the timecapsule!
James Watt was born in my home town of Greenock on the Firth of Clyde. There is a statue of him there, and the docks are called the James Watt Docks. He's a very big deal in Greenock!
They'd be turning in their graves at the state of the place and the questionable (hotel) residents these days.
They would also turn if they knew The City Chambers was SOLD- Don’t know to whom or when? Now rented back to the Council….!
I’m taking bets on how long the Oswald statue will last😂😂
Yes to Ghostbusters!
Good video. Shame about College of Building and Printing building spoiling some of the shots.
Its currently under a major renovation so shouldn't look so derelict soon.
I think at least one statue of Billy Connolly is inevitable at some time.
Freedom Square.

Another entertaining and informative video from you. BTW James ‘Paraffin’ Young is buried just down the hill from where I stay.
Thank you and James Young may get a bigger part in a future episode, he only played a cameo in this one.
Has to be the big yin Billy Connolly !!!
I know it’s astonishing Glasgow mate
But could you do one in Renfrew please as there is loads of history there
I’ll know if there’s a little crowd around that measuring plaque when I seek it out that they are fellow subscribers 😂 Id vote for a statue of Andy Murray 😉
We get 2 nicknames of for police from Peel. Bobbies, and the original nickname for Metropolitan Police, Peelers.
"...he moved to Edinburgh for some reason..." Ah, there speaks Glasgow! In the fifties, we learned the poem "The Burial of Sir John Moore in Corunna"---but not a hint that he had been a Scot. Ah, British Empire propaganda! Thank you for this.
Billy Connoly should have a statue
William Gladstone inherited slave money too - his father owned huge slave-run sugar estates in Demerara (modern day Guyana)
Astonishing whit man check the place oot man.
Definitely the Big Yin, I'm sure he find it hilarious that he'd be getting shat on by seagulls for eternity. Can't believe I've never noticed the measurements, will need to have a nosy.
It's Sir John Moore not Muir. Charles Wolfe wrote a famous poem about his death.
I did notice I switch between both in the video.
Nobody. They are no more people like them now.
Billy Connelly deserves a statue in the square. How about a video about the buildings around the square.
I’ll tell who shouldn’t have a statue, whoever designed the new frontage of Queen Street station, thought the old one was bad, whit an eyesore…
JOHN MACLEAN
Did you know he pops up in episode 47? ruclips.net/video/lhiZ07xeEwM/видео.html
Sadly , the question is ...how much of Glasgow was built with slavery trade money ? More than a lot !
Its fair to say that almost all of Glasgow's trade (and every other industrialised city of the time) in the 1700's involved slave trading in some way. Im not even close to being qualified to discuss it fully but remember that there was also a lot of people in Glasgow who opposed slavery and helped to get it banned.
Not to mention the tobacco barons..!
The lord clyde statue should definitely go, he is probably the worst person with a statue there giving the whole quelling a rebellion in India thing.
Thanks!
