Juneteenth: America's second Independence Day
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- On June 19, 1865, more than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Union Gen. Gordon Granger announced in Galveston that all enslaved people in Texas were now free. The day would become commemorated as Juneteenth, but for the now-free African Americans, the future was uncertain. CBS News' Mark Whitaker takes a personal journey to Jewett, Texas, where his great-grandfather became a free man, and meets with relatives for whom Juneteenth has taken on a special meaning.

Amen and Amen; FREEDOM is important to every human being....God Bless You All !!!
It's worth mentioning that the U.S. abolished slavery before any African king or oba or mansa abolished it in their realms. Sadly slavery continues to exist in parts of Africa and throughout the world in the form of human (sex) trafficking, forced labor (concentration camps), bonded labor (to repay debts). To think, it wasn't all that long ago that most of the world thought of this evil institution as part and parcel, so to say, of the natural order of things.

In 1971 we created a generic "Presidents Day" to celebrate the anniversaries of the birthdays of our two greatest presidents- Washington, a man without whom we very possibly would not have the republic we do and Lincoln, the man who saved that republic- to both ensure a guaranteed three day weekend and to reduce the number of federal holidays. Now we have a federal holiday celebrating a redundant military order. Whoopee.

They claim not to like us, blame us for all the wrongs in our lives AND theirs yet, they are always around and in our business. Anyone that doesn’t want to celebrate just don’t and mind your business when it comes to us.
@@bartonic777 Texas joined the Union in December of 1845. The Emancipation Proclamation freeing all those in involuntary servitude in the States in rebellion against the US was issued on January 01, 1865. That proclamation listed those States by name and included Texas. The essentially meaningless military order being celebrated as ending slavery in Texas was issued six months later on June 19, 1865.
If people in Texas want to celebrate a military order that merely reminded Texans that slavery had been banned that's fine but declaring it a national holiday is just plain dumb.
@Kevin Kincaid My typo aside, you seem to be saying, "The Emancipation Proclamation was meaningless since it only ended slavery in Confederate States and then only symbolically because none of those States were under Union military control." There's an argument to be made for that view but then one has to consider that almost a full year passed before President Johnson declared in April of 1866 that the insurrection was over in all the former Confederate States - EXCEPT Texas. The insurrection in Texas didn't end and Texas wasn't under Union military control until late August of 1866.
Anyone may celebrate Juneteenth as much as they wish but formal national holidays should not celebrate a rewriting of a nation's history just to make people feel good.
Isn't 4th of July redundant by that same logic? Washington fought for independence and already has his own holiday, so why do we need two?

Romans 10: 9-10.
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God..
Ephesians 2: 8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Romans 8: 1
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 15: 3-4
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
2 Corinthians 5: 21

Overall, I really liked the June 19, 2022 Juneteenth piece that included genealogy and interview with someone who remembers picking it like my ("white") mother. Yet, the nice young man, heading a Afro-American chamber of commerce in Waco, stabbed me when he said the holiday commemorates when all people became equal. Are women not people?!?! I reach out to the quote of Justice Thurgood Marshall that the original Constitution did not include him (a free Afro-American). You could add a note that CBS network realizes the young man's comment was not accurate and that the network recognizes women of every "color" STILL could not vote or live equally as men. (I rant some here but for the sake of teaching!) In 1970, my newly-single parent mother had to fight for credit so she buy clothes for us to attend school. Although my father's administrative career allowed him to die in his million dollar home leave nothing to his children, my computer operator mother left half her life savings in a trust for me to survive my disabilities. Even my dad's 2nd wife left me her entire life insurance policy. (Still living and married the 3rd time, dad's widow doesn't communicate with us stepchildren of her 2nd marriage).
If enough women of color and enough women of white descent grow to a place together, maybe we can eventually have a movement together to establish something in recognition.

I give more weight to the soldiers that fought and died for their freedom over the recipients of that freedom. Juneteenth should celebrate the soldiers sacrifice as well as black freedom. A holiday has to be inclusive for all Americans to be valued. Culmination means "the highest or climactic point of something, especially as attained after a long time". The Juneteenth Emancipation Notice, is that culmination of the civil war. I call Juneteenth "Civil War Day". The other issue, even though slaves were now free, they were not U.S. citizens, but illegal aliens. Only their children born after July 9, 1968, after 14th Amendment was ratified, were automatically U.S. citizens. Former slaves could have become U.S. citizens if they became naturalized citizens, but they did not go through any process to become U.S. citizens, so their status remained as illegal aliens and could not vote. I believe blacks that became soldiers (like the Buffalo Soldiers) were naturalized U.S. citizens.
So racism with extra steps. Got it.
@@deltabot6550 what a weak and pathetic mentality. Blah blah blah everything's racist blah blah blah
The Civil War was not fought over slavery. Crittenden Resolution July 25 1861.

@@deltabot6550 interesting..... when I Blacklog your history it shows that you "like" all your own comments. That is pretty pathetic, even for a BOT.
Juneteenth is Woke!
So you're asleep
Yes it is! It's awesome to be awake instead of going through life like a zombie.
@@glnnchrstphr9717 yeah... woke IS the new zombie... no brains just mindlessly supporting whatever gets thrown out there
Nah it’s just black
No, woke is "Booohooo, poor black people, so little has changed for them since they were first brought over here on a boat." Celebrating the end of slavery is the polar opposite of wokeness. The more you follow the woke narrative, the more you believe things haven't changed since then and, logically, the less worth celebrating emancipation would be.
Happy Juneteenth to American Descendants of Chattel Slavery. Just curious, CBS why didn’t you use the official Juneteenth flag in the segment intro? It’s a symbolic red, white and blue flag, not red black green yellow.
Red green and yellow what you see most often
@@hardrocker796 yes, I realize that. But since it’s an official holiday now I was curious as to why they didn’t use the official flag instead.
You know this date and event was not the end of slavery in the US, right? Somehow, it has become a false version of history.
No it is NOT. They were showing the CORRECT FLAG!
@@marque235 because it has NOTHING to do with that racist flag that was created while Blacks were enslaved in this country.

@@rashondachester3637 They have brittle spirits. Think about how only a few days after the George Floyd protests white police were literally having mental breakdowns on social media because they couldn't handle the thought of people thinking they were all bad. Now realize that Blacks have had to endure that x 1,000 for 400 years and still persevered.
Happy Father’s Day!
