    Hi I’m a respiratory therapist (and a new pilot), Yeah, that was an asthma attack. Everyone can find an asthma attack if they find the right triggers. Mine are exercise and cold weather. Might be the same for you. Two puffs of albuterol prior to going out fixes guys like us. For 3-4 hours.
    Thanks for all you do, you’re good at this.

    When you use an ammo case for your battery storage I’ve heard it’s safer to remove the rubber seal on the case. This way gasses can escape the case during a battery fire and not build up pressure in the case and cause an explosion.

    • @DavidEvans455
      @DavidEvans455 4 месяца назад +2

      True, however the seal is important when it comes to latching the can. If you remove the seal, cut off the latch end and put just that part back. Another option is to drill a few small holes in the can to allow that pressure to escape.

      Great advice

    • @dejangegic
      @dejangegic 4 месяца назад

      That's a good point. But I'd still keep the rubber on and just poke a pin-hole at the top so that you can actually control the direction in which the gases escape, and make it louder so that it alerts you if you're there.

    Recently got some heated gloves myself, although mine are actually heated glove liners so I can put work gloves over them to throw around firewood and do all the things that would destroy them in short order. Decades ago, I got a thumb injury that compromised circulation in one thumb and it gets painful and useless very quickly. The heated liners are a game changer for me!

    Thanks for sacrificing your batteries for science!
    I saw Jake Sloan's bag video and noticed the hand warmers, so I decided to put my batteries on the passenger seat with the seat warmer on and it helped keep them warm in our 5 degree temps this weekend. Worked great! I'll find my hand warmers and give those a try as well.
    Thanks for the link to the gloves. I'm not sure I trust myself flying with gloves on, but I'm considering them. I currently use photo gloves, so I can flip the fingertips off and put my thumbs directly on the sticks. It's better than nothing, but once they get cold. covering them back up is useless. Perhaps what I need is heated gloves with removeable fingertips. :) Or to move south.

    yeah, that is actually for all lithium batteries. I avoid riding my electric motorcycle throughout wintertime as well although the battery is isolated n comes with a BMS that protects from an explosion due to e.g. overheating, low level discharge or high/low temps. Average perfect temp is around 70.

    I've seen people suggest that when you bring your drone in from the cold that you put it in a ziploc bag first. This prevents the humidity from the warm indoors from affecting the electronics. How necessary that is I don't know.

Funny this video popped up today as I just walked in from doing some flying right after a snow storm and I usually will warm the battery or do as you suggest in hovering in place for a minute or so before flying. I’ve also wrapped batteries with the Hot Hands hand warmers to warm them up on cold days.

These are dji mini 2 batteries. The next battery was fine and i kept my cell warm. I think the limit is -10C for it. But winter scenes make such beautiful videos. Cheers. Where are you? Great video. You just answered one of my questions with this vidoe. I have an Air 3 with 3 battery packs. I noticed that after a few weeks, the batterys are at 3 lights rather than 4 even though I charge them up after use all the way. I thought it was discharging when it was stored in the drone or in the charging pack so I took them out and they still lost power over time. After flying and discharging a battery, do you charge them up all the way or stop at 50 or 75%? Also, do you ever leave a battery in your drone when not in use?

    From my experience battery problems in cold weather are the least of your worries. I used to fly in cold weather until I had motor bearing problems and propellers that got brittle and exploded. Both problems cost more to repair than the price of a battery not to mention the safety issues. I am not in favor of going outside manufacturers specs after a couple of mishaps. I appreciate all the information that you put out but I would like to see these things addressed for the new pilots. Thanks

  • @robertv1273

    What worries me is condesation,if you fly in cold temps and bring it into a warm invironment a layer of heavy moisture is going to coat everything exposed to air inside and out. Just seems to me it would be potentually damaging to a smart camera drone.

    My Phantom 3 won't stay in hover until and unless the battery is 26 C or warmer. It will launch, but the battery voltage rapidly drops to the forced auto-land. So while in hover I keep my eye on the battery *voltage* it will dip briefly and then start back up if the battery is warming itself sufficiently.

    I am quite certain that if it is that stinking cold, I won't be outside flying a drone or doing anything else besides getting back indoors as fast as possible! Here's another tip: I you ever crash your drone in water, as in fully submerged, DO NOT reuse nor recharge that battery. In fact, do not store it inside your home nor anywhere there are any combustibles. It is a fire just waiting to happen. Especially true if it soaked up any salt water. Smart batteries do have the 'smarts' to prevent this from occurring, however, that little brain only works to prevent a fire if it is not damaged from exposure to water. It is not 100% failsafe.

    I dont understand how my Air 3 batteries (all three) dont last more than 25-28 mins EVER!. I recently did a static timelapse. Basically flew it up some 100 metres and started the timelapse. No time spent in waypoint selection, no movement, and it wasnt even windy that morning. And I thought at least this would get me close to the advertised range. But that was not to be. At about 18 mins it began warning me of low battery with about 20% left. I pushed it to about 6% since I would have to just lower it in a straight line to me and it wouldnt have needed anymore than 2% for that. At the end the result was roughly 23 mins; in a situation where I thought I would actually get higher range than the average of 25-28 mins.
    How can all three batteries be faulty? What am I doing wrong here?

      That is peculiar. You are certain they are at 100% when starting? I would reach out to DJI support for sure

      @@51Drones Oh yes that I'm sure of. They're always at 100% on start.

      Ya, this is very strange. I wonder if the altitude you live at makes that much of a difference?@@AgnosticAcqua

    The proper way to do a battery test is to use the same battery on both environments.
