  • Recent releases from Pete Rock & Common, Rakim, Tha Dogg Pound, Freeway & Jake One + Eminem has me thinking if we need an adult contemporary Hip-Hop category. Let's discuss.

    Another Dope video. Definitely need adult contemporary Hip Hop. This is refreshing. No yelling, just have a discussion. Nas, Rakim, Ghostface, MC Lyte, Common & Pete Rock, Dogg Pound, LL Cool J. It's refreshing to see my favorite MCs still dropping 25-30 years later. We need these MCS we grew up to still put out music.

    I actually think it’s the other way around, I think instead of having a category for adult contemporary Hiphop, we should just name that Hiphop
    And have a category for this other form
    Of music that’s super popular right now. Maybe name that, give it its own space and reclaim the title of the genre

    I wonder what your take is on that new Mustard album, granted I never heard an album of his before so i might just be seeing his curation with fresh “new born eyes” full of respect and admiration but what you said about Kanye Mbdtf how it compares to the chronic, and how it was curated perfectly I feel like it might be too soon but Mustard has one honestly, I also think it be cool to have a catergory specifically for albums or artist such as these who put together albums and produce them and really get artist together and really make something so cinematic and have so much depth, granted it’s not as high level (no disrespect to mustard) to mbdtf or the chronic, but I say it’s the closet thing to an album that is pretty high level and it’s a step in the right direction to be considered a classic one day, I know it’s soon might be recency bias but bruh that album took me on a journey with all those artist that took me from the school to the street to church, which just told me like bruh people still do care about painting a portrait of an everyday life they might not be living however have found memories and want to help their people understand they haven’t forgotten where they came from. This is a long ash comment but I just felt like this was an ok space to share it 🙏🏾 stay blessed as always thanks for the thoughtful raw content that isn’t full of drama and clickbait news

    Back when we used to buy albums and upload it to our iTunes they already had subgenres coded into them either Hiphop, Rap, Gangster Rap or a combination of the 3. I personally liked categorizing them this way cause of playlisting but as rap music expands sub genres are def needed even beyond just adult contemporary (sidebar I don’t even think R&B folk like that label) also I’d refrain from making this about elderstatesmen and the new guard cause some old artist still chase the trends and some new artists aim for a nostalgic sound. It’s gotta be about subject matter production and overall feel.

    If there is a such thing as adult contemporary hip hop, the new Common/Pete Rock album is the definition of it. It is basically easy listening for hip hop fans in their 40s and 50s who grew up on the genre who don’t violence and aggression of rap albums by younger artists.

    We always had Adult Contemporary Hip Hop. This is nothing new. WHODINI was adult contemporary Hip Hop. They were more mature than RUN DMC, which why they fell off by their 3rd album. They were ahead of their time, talking stuff young kids couldn’t relate to. It was the same with LL in the 90’s. If you have youngsters listening to the content of BIG and NAS, LL’s frequencies are too sophisticated for the young ears. Same with Chuck D. Rappers don’t fall off, they grow and if you’re just checking for new sounds or content of today, think about whom you’re sleeping on ?

    • @RobMarkman
      @RobMarkman  2 месяца назад +3

      I see your point but don’t agree entirely. In the 90s when BIG and Nas emerged LL was still pretty current. That Mr Smith album and the remixes played on Hot 97 just like BIG’s joints. DJs played those records in the same mix. “Doin It” “Loungin” he had the Mary remix he did. “i Shot Ya” remix. LL had a lot of joints in the mix when BIG and Nas emerged.

    Rap is a pretty young art form and music genre - there's only going to be more and more rappers who are 40+ still putting out dope shit.
    I don't think there's a need to segregate the older rappers into their own genre - feel confident that the people who gravitate to the older heads will still find that music.

    I understand where your coming from, but the OGs are the reason why the newer artist can see commercial success. The only reason we're having this conversation is that we've been groomed to prioritize the music industrie's standards/demands over the culture itself. The reality is the culture has never been respected but exploited and creating a "new genere" for older artists who were already being shunned by the award shows, marginalized by the charts, the lables, and the media, all while pioneering the culture we all love & profit from. We shouldn't have to change how we introduce ourselves to be accepted by people who never respected who we've always been.

    If LL wants to do it to these meatballs and Em is still putting up Barry Bonds numbers then let them compete in the field. Seems like the idea of giving them a separate category is simply to explain away the lack of mainstream interest in the projects themselves.

      @@RobMarkman it makes sense in other genres. the production, the writing, and the sound in general is usually an older sound. its not as loud. its not as energetic of an approach to music in general. a 55 year old in hip hop can make something as relevant as a 20 year old and if we're being honest here, they are significantly more skilled than the 20 year old. like the Nas/Hitboy albums being considered "adult contemporary" is almost a slap in the face imo. if there is a genre that shouldnt create these boxes, its hop hop. we should, instead, focus on talented creatives regardless of age(within reason) and less on waves.
      mark my words(you should use this play on words as a segment btw)....a late 30s/40+ year old is gonna create a genre defining album that shifts the whole sound of all of this.
