Dear friend, I have lived in Oregon for a year, and it is truly amazing what you created here for us to enjoy or just get back some of the most amazing memories I created there. Nowadays, I struggle with a lot of stress due to much work, but this really brought me back in time and I feel much more uplifted. Thank you again for sharing and wishing you the best :)

You are very thorough in covering the local sites. We live in Portland and we really like Astoria and we take the Amtrak bus which goes from Portland to Cannon Beach, Seaside and Astoria. The busses are nice and the drivers are friendly. We especially like going to the coast in the winter to watch the storms.

My husband and I are planning a day trip to Astoria from Kelso. Thanks for the info on things to do. My grandma lived in Netarts and my folks would ship me off to her for the summer in the 60s and 70s. I had aunts and uncles and cousins in Oceanside and also out on hwy 101 just before Beaver. Those cousins went to Nestucca H.S. The ones in Oceanside I'm not sure but they all had official lifeguard training. Happy memories of Grandma's Gravenstein applesauce. It was the best!

I live in St. Helens, grew up here and on Puget Island on the Columbia River commercial fishing. You hit most of the spots I would recommend. The Portway Tavern is a historic tavern with great food and a collection of life rings from boats and ships, one of mine included. If you head upriver you have spots like Cathlamet, Stella, Rainier, and St. Helens that all have different things to offer and are historically significant. I mention Stella because that was where they made the Cigar Rafts of logs that were sent to San Francisco after the earthquake and fires, they have a really cool little museum. Cathlamet is like stepping back into Mayberry RFD, they have a wonderful marina with camping, the bridge to Puget Island, and the Ferry to Westport Oregon. St. Helens has wonderful access to the river and the city has a park on Sand Island with camping, docks, and a shuttle during the summer. My family originally came to Astoria from Norway and Sweden for the commercial fishing, then moved upriver to Puget Island and Cathlamet, my parents moved to St. Helens 50 miles upriver. That is where I am now, at the Marina in my sailboat kicking back with my Siamese cat.

    • @JacksonMeyer

There is a lot here, so let me unpack it: You are living on a sailboat in a marina kickin' it with your siamese cat!?! That's freaking awesome. And super cool, lots of history in the area that I didn't know about, thanks for sharing! I had never heard of Cathlamet before. To my knowledge, Bouy Brewing had a massive collapse in the kitchen from the weight of all the appliances and such and they are possible moving or rebuilding… that was a cool feature I wonder if it will live to see another day or if it will be refreshed… 🍻

@@JacksonMeyer- It wasn’t from overloading. The pier on which the brewery and restaurant were developed had defects which were not corrected before development. I think some piles failed, leading to the collapse. As of November 2023, the building seems to be in the same state as when it collapsed, except for being fenced off. I’m wondering when they will repair it.

Two sites sites of interest to history buffs, a short drive out of Astoria, are:
    1. Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, at the site of their winter camp.
    2. On the way to (1) a memorial to Conde McCullough, engineer of many distinctive bridges in Oregon. The two drawbridges in and near Astoria are two of his earliest surviving bridges. The memorial is located next to the bridge over the Lewis and Clark River.

We got to Warrenton for groceries. Some killer restaurants down there too. If you go to bow picker and there’s too many people try to Mexican food truck right across from it. So dang good. If we stayed 4 nights (Friday through Tuesday) in Astoria do you think that's too much? Would you recommend maybe doing just a couple nights there then staying in a different coast town like Seaside or Cannon Beach for the other nights?

Oh awesome, you are going to have a blast! I had no idea that that was next year, are all the actors coming back? I've got to look into this. You hit the nail on the head, I'd do 2 nights in CB, and 2 nights in Astoria. Seaside is close to CB, but not far from Astoria, but basing out of Astoria makes it more difficult to do CB and some beaches that are south of there (I have videos on all those places btw). Great glimpse of Astoria, but certainly not the whole story. The food segment missed Josephson's Smokehouse. With over 100 years of delectable history, Josephson's can offer limited seating for a walk-in lunch. Their mainstay is the world-wide persistent clientele that keeps the shipping-crew busy, but they very graciously welcome retail guests. The Clam Chowder is hands-down the best in Astoria.

Pro-Tip: Keep your ear tuned for the Warrenton Deep Sea Fishermen's Benefit Crab Feed which is annually presented (late January-ish), depending on the harvest at the Warrenton Community Center. A wonderful cause and wonderful food. Several vessels contribute the prime first-catch which accords we land-lubbers a full Dungeness crab, coleslaw, garlic cheese bread, cocktail sauce, beverage, and dessert. Festival seating and prepare to be splashed by your neighbors' using lengths of 2 x 2 fir to crack the shells. Don't be surprised to find yourself seated next to a local, county, or State dignitary. It draws those officeholders / office seekers about as readily as the annual Brownsmead Corn Feed. OH - did I mention the Corn Feed?

I was the railroad signal maintainer back in 1983 and had responsibility for every crossing signal from Portland to Warrenton. My favorite thing, other than the tug boater's bars, was buying a bucket of Colonel Sanders Kentucky fried chicken and feeding the seagulls down at one of the several still operating canneries, mostly pier 8 through 12. Nowadays its 95% superb eatery joints that have blossomed. Hopefully, this delightful little city doesn't get mongrelized like Provincetown, MA.
