I think it depends what you use your truck for. A topper will protect all your tools or equipment from the elements and prying eyes. However you cant put tall or bulky items in the bed . I'm a gardener and I bought a ex at&t truck from a auction. It had a aluminum shell with compartments on the side. Its perfect for me because it hides all my tools and equipment. Plus it protects it from the elements and thieves. I have a dump trck so if I ever need to carry big items , I use my dump truck.
