    This is everything I’ve been considering. Got my Tacoma last week. Need a shell and want the drawer system. Same problem. 2 car seats in the back. Also no where for the dog so that rubber topper idea was great. I also have some boat carpet left over from a project I’ll probably drop in on top. I plan on camping out in my bed for fishing tournaments. This is great. Still undecided on what shell. I like yours with maybe the addition of windoors. The smartcap evo is cool but expensive. Thanks for the video. Definitely helped.

With my new shell I ordered the headliner....factory roof rack (any leaks are on them.... better than me drilling a new shell) and the removable front slider window in the shell. Makes cleaning the windows between the cab and shell easy and allows access between the two for animals and everything else.

So I explained it. He came to the Tacoma on my tailgate. He knows the word TACO but ma give him fits. I can see you're not concerned with the bed leaking.
    For everyone else, here's a tip:
    *BEFORE* you buy the cap at night use a flashlight to find all the open places in the bed.
    What I was really interested in was the paint match. Yours is only slightly better than mine. I got $500 off because of the difference but what I realized later was that the cap was painted correctly. I could tell because it matched the tailgate perfectly. When I put my vehicle next to another Barcelona red Tacoma I can tell my vehicle has a slightly different tint.

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  11 месяцев назад

      Mine didn’t leak and it shouldn’t. Wasn’t a concern for me.

      @@PointShiftDrive All beds leak. If they didn't, they would fill with water after the rain. That's why they have drainage holes.
      Also when you get the factory tonneau cover they give you two rubber blocks that fit up in the front corners. These are to fill the gaps between the composite bed and the metal sides.

  • @TRUE_GR1T
    @TRUE_GR1T Год назад +1

    In August I bought a 15 TRD OR access cab with the 6' bed and the same leer shell already on it. I camped in it and it poured rain and I discovered that every single window leaked around at least 1 corner of the frame. I don't know if it's because of the extreme climate here (Alberta Canada) or if the gasket they use on the windows wears out that quickly everywhere else. I ended up buying a roll of butyl tape and pulled all the windows off and used butyl tape around the frames and after a heavy soaking in the car wash they seem ok now. Unfortunately the spline/weather stripping around the glass is peeled out in one corner of one window and it still leaks there but it's minor compared ot before.

    Damn Dogs, they make you do shit! I was perfectly happy with my 2nd gen reg cab. Had my tent mounted with 4" rise bars and the top of it was even with the top of the cab. The kids are out of the house and the wife doesn't like wheeling and camping. It was the perfect little adventure mobile for one person. Life was good. Then we decided to get a little German Shepherd puppy. Damn thing is only 6 months now and barley fits in the front with me. So, I just ordered a SnugTop with the Sportsman package. The Sportsman package gives the roof a 500lb dynamic load rating, so the tent will be fine up there. I hope the pup likes his new mobile dog house!

    • @PointShiftDrive

      Yeah but dynamic weight is what matters most of the time. 600lbs is basically 2-3 people and the full weight of the tent, rack, railings etc. that’s doable. But when the top weight is moving, you want to make sure it isn’t too heavy and snaps right off around a corner

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  Год назад +1

      The Smartcap is nice. I think it has a better look than a traditional shell but the price is steep. The functionality and practicality of the Smartcap might be better than the Leer but is the extra $ worth it? I dunno.
      Also I dont think the look is everyone’s taste. It stands out more so than the Leer. My shell just blended in with the truck. The Smartcap stands out.

    Looking at a 2018 OR with 14k miles, has same shell. Asking price 28.9 concerned about shifting issues and fuel pump recall though.
    Does the shell or bed leak at all? Is there a window on the shell to line up with the rear sliding window on the truck? New subscriber, great channel Thanks

    • @PointShiftDrive
      @PointShiftDrive  4 года назад +1

      Good questions...
      So there is a sliding glass window against the truck rear window. I typically just leave that window open and toggle my truck window from the inside any time I want some air or to talk to my dogs.
      as for leaks, no leaks from the windows BUT if the topper wasnt installed properly with sealant then you may see some leaks at the corners where the bottom of the topper meets the bed of the track against the cab. The good news is if you have that issue you can just shoot some silicon in there and close off any holes and you should be good. Its also worth noting that the only time you should see leaks from there is when you are washing your truck. not during rains or anything because of the angle of the where the holes are. Hope that makes sense.
      Id buy it and not worry. you can always make adjustments if needed or sell it all together if you arent happy with it.
      Thanks for subscribing and watching!

      I think that depends on what you use your truck for. the Leer is much more usable for everyday stuff... for example, you can really use the roof racks for bikes, luggage, tents, lumber. the SP has a less usable rack system, just not as strong IMO. however, if you are using your truck for camping/overlanding/or bugout, nothing beats having a bed with you no matter where you are.
