99 ways to die is a great song. It was on that Beavis n Butthead CD. That was a hilarious and rockin CD.
So this is off Cryptic Writings, which in my opinion was Megadeths most successful attempt at a more stripped down and accessible sound. It's basically a rock album with some metal influences and some nice blues licks here and there. After this album they'd try to take that more accessible sound even further on "Risk", which infamously is their worst album and pretty much a complete flop.
As for his singing, he definitely improved his technique right around this era, probably starting around the mid 90's. There's some good live footage from '98 where his singing has improved greatly, although the natural sound of his voice is still pretty nasal and there's not really anything to do about that. I'd say from '98 to '07 was his best time in terms of singing, and then in the late 2000s his voice definitely hit a decline as a result of all those years of touring (and the drugs and alcohol probably didn't help, either). Megadeths strength was never really Daves voice, but I think people took a liking to it in a punk rock sort of way. It's more about the attitude and character of his singing than the actual timbre of his voice. That's what I think, anyway.

You're right, and I would even say he sounds good considering his age and the abuse his body has taken nowadays. It's definitely way different from what he sounded like pre-2008, though.

Underrated album for sure. It was the first megadeth album I ever received from my uncle. It's not thrash but I still appreciate it.

Torry Tortur Youthanasia is only that great if you like super polished and safe sounding g radio friendly shit. I like the album because it’s Megadeth but they have 9-10 better albums.

cryptic is my least liked album personally. Cant really connect to the specific sound it has, not Thrashy enough for me. I can see why someone else would think its their best work though, its really different from their other work

I guess it took me getting old to appreciate Cryptic Writings but it's become one of my favorite albums ever. I love Dave's vocals on this whole album and it's the perfect mix of their heavy and commercial sides. Just happened to be wearing my Dave Mustaine/Megadeth logo shirt today. Great reaction, I saw an interview with Dave Mustaine many years ago right after they released the album Youthanasia where he said that he slowly started feeling more comfortable with singing on the Countdown to Extinction (1992) album, but he felt like he really found his “voice” and the style of singing that he feels comfortable with on the Youthanasia (1994) album, this album is from 1997, I think so if I remember correctly, so don’t shoot me if I’m wrong... Lol 😂 This album is produced by Dann Huff, the guitarist and vocalist from the band Giant, awesome musician and brilliant producer. And Dave co-produced this album, Dave is actually very skilled and awesome at producing...

Dave did in fact get better at singing over the years.
When he started singing in Megadeth he only started because he couldn't find a Vocalist, but he decided he'd become the singer and over the time he learn't how to properly use his voice.

It's really repetitive though and they don't like that. It's really the only problem I have with later Maiden. But I love Out of the Silent Planet and it's ridiculously repetitive, but the lyrics that are there are interesting.

Many people do not like the Megadeth Albums that are not Thrash Metal or Metal. There are a few albums that around this time period from Megadeth that are absolutely brilliant but could not be called Metal - more like Rock or Hard Rock. The true metalheads hate these albums, but they are so freaking good - the entire catalog is good. Not everyday are you in the mood for Head Crusher, so those days you listen to Cryptic Writings, Risk, or The World needs a Hero. It was very refreshing watching your video that features a great Megadeth song that came from that period when the albums weren't considered Heavy Metal.

Dave's singing was improved because of the producer. They used a high profile producer for the album. These producers will make them do take after take until they get the results they are looking for. He also probably had a vocal coach for that album as well. The whole style of music is completely different too. The first albums are Thrash/Speed Metal albums so the focus isn't as much on vocal performance and much focused on kicking ass. 90's Megadeth on the other hand was about trying to get radio hits but they never really succeeded at it.
BTW, that version of Tornado of Souls is a live version. Dave Mustaine was never a good live singer. He has always sounded better on the studio albums. That said, I've seen Megadeth live 7 or 8 times in my life and his singing has never bothered me in a live setting. The volume and energy kind of masks it. But whenever I hear him sing on a live recording, he sounds like a cat being strangled.

You should check out Dave's other band with Lee Ving on vocals. They were called MD.45 and released one album called "the Craving." Years later Dave did a remaster and re-recorded the lyrics in his own vocals. He initially claimed it was because he lost the master vocal tracks. Both versions have their charms, but personally I prefer Ving's vocals.
Thanks, I almost completely erased Cryptic Writings and Risk from my memory, and now I have to forget all over again. Thankfully Dave has made Megadeth thrash again.

A great Megadeth song that has many great solos is Burnt Ice. Dave Mustaine played like a possessed man on that song. Dave is an amazing songwriter and guitar player for sure. He has written many great riffs throughout his career. There are some fans that don't like Dave's singing but for Megadeth his vocals are perfect. I could not imagine anyone else singing for Megadeth but only Dave Mustaine.

Mustaine did vocal training before Countdown to Extinction, and it shows. At this point he turned his attention farther away from musical technicality, speed and aggression and looked to broaden the appeal of his music to a larger demographic. This is mainly due to Metallicas commercial success, and Mustaines desire to outdo them.
Go To Hell is one of Megadeth's best songs in my opinion. It was released on the Beavis & Butthead soundtrack and again on a later B-sides (Hidden Treasures?) CD. The video is entertaining too.

While people are keeping the Megadeth train running lemme throw my vote for The Scorpion. Lyrically one of my favorite Megadeth tracks because I love the parable it's based on.
Never expected to see a reaction to this song, but I'm glad you did it. I like to see new listeners try songs from different time periods so they can get a better overview on what the band is about musically. Buying Cryptic Writings as a kid when it came out in 1997 is one of my earliest and clearest Megadeth memories. Despite listening to them before, I would definitely say this is the album that made me a fan. Full of catchy hooks, lots of variety and killer from start to finish.

this was from when dave mustaine got too obsessed with writing radio hits. it got to the point they were rewriting bon jovi tunes
this was from when Dave Mustaine was letting other band members have a larger say in the songwriting process and Marty Friedman wanted them to have a more mainstream alternative sound because he's not really into heavy metal. Risk followed this album and Marty quit shortly after that when Dave told him they needed to get back to their metal roots
