    This clip really doesn't capture how gnarly this approach and landing actually is. I was on the bank side of the plane (Embraer 175) one time, and I swear the top of the forest looked like it was just off the tip of the wing. Nobody had warned me about this approach, and I honestly thought we had suffered some mechanical failure and the plane was going to crash into the trees. It's intense.

    Me and my sons made this trip 2 weeks ago and it was a exciting landing but the drive from the airport to the resort was also a experience that i will never forget! Dominica is a jewel of the Caribbean!

    Yup, flown this many times in the late 90’s… one of the most unique approaches for sure but an absolute blast for us Pilots.

    Amazing footage thanks for sharing this. Breathtaking approach, truly requires all your concentration! Considering Amerijet flew 727-200Fs into here before the runway widening, extension and airport upgrade; direct A319/WL service from Miami would definitely be possible out of this field. Guess American is taking the conservative approach for now, but it's fantastic they are offering direct service now from Miami with Eagle. Must be great for the islanders. Back in the day (90s/Early 2000s) they had that massive flight line of ATR42s and Super ATRs at the SJU hub doing all their island hopping connections. Had the pleasure of flying on those ATRs a few times, once into PUJ (2000 or so) where we did an awesome twilight low level circle pattern to land and another time into the old city center airport at STI. IIRC AA even used to fly 727-100s into St. Thomas when its runway was quite a bit shorter than Dominica's is now. They later extended it (still not long) with that enormous displaced threshold and started flying direct A300-600Rs from JFK. AA is a shell of what it used to be in the Caribbean but it's nice to see them slowly improving and adding new services again.

    I never understood how pilots land here because we the passengers only see coconut trees! Thank you for sharing

      This was odd to watch as when I land (passenger) it’s always from the sea to the mountains and not mountains to sea. There was a plane that crashed “recently” maybe 6ish years ago I believe landing in this same direction.

    Went to Ross med school in Dominica. It was always a thrill landing on that island. I heard from pilots later on that a lot of red alerts and whistles go off during the landing.

    I wouldn't call landing at that airport most dangerous! I would say it's a bit awkward!

    Yes Roseau is scary particularly the old Liat puddle jumpers.
    It’s a interesting seeing the hulks of planes off the side of the runway when your taxiing .😮

    She could have steered it off to the ramp at the 3rd turn-off without having to do a 180°… Def not a Southwest pilot 😂

    Is landing from the sea not an option? This route seems unnecessary.

    • @crocodile1313
      @crocodile1313 9 месяцев назад +2

      Probably due to the prevailing winds. I don't know if the winds ever change directions there, but an onshore breeze would necessitate an inland approach.

    If you call landing in Dominica dangerous then what do you call the roads in Dominica? I've never thrown up landing in Melville Hall. I cannot say the same for the ride to Roseau 🤢🤮

      The Dominica driving was so overhyped. First time for me going LHD on Dominica and it was pretty chill I would say 😎
