Music: "Dissolve Me", generously supplied by Alt-J, supporters of the movement to save the Arctic.
At 4:20 in the morning, 11 July 2013, six climbers began a 15 hour climb of Europe's tallest building, the Shard, to send a message to the headquarters of oil giant Shell.
This behind-the-scenes film captures the months-long build-up to the climb and the first hair-raising moments when things didn't go to plan.
The climb was live-streamed from the activists' helmet cameras in a ground-breaking digital campaign roll-out that represented a "new paradigm", according to leading PR advisor Solitaire Townsend. A live audio commentary overlaid the footage for the whole day -- with Greenpeace presenters interviewing experts and taking comments from as far away as New Zealand (Xena actress Lucy Lawless called in to the show). #Iceclimb trended globally on Twitter and at one point six of the top ten trending topics in the UK were about the protest.
In the last 30 years we've lost 75% of the Arctic sea ice volume. And as the ice melts, Shell and other oil companies want to drill there for more oil. Burning that oil only accelerates the melt. It is up to us to stop Shell's dangerous and destructive plans.
The climbers: Ali Garrigan, 27 (UK), Liesbeth Deddens, 31 (Netherlands), Sabine Huyghe, 33 (Belgium), Sandra Lamborn, 29 (Sweden), Victoria Henry, 32 (Canada), Wiola Smul, 23 (Poland).
What will you do to save the Arctic? savethearctic.org

So totally amazing....I was at the base of the Shard while they climbed to the top and opened up the flags....Greenpeace, together with the more radical Sea Sheppard are highlighting the predicament that we find ourselves in yet again. The planet does not need saving from us....we need to save our planet FOR us....Thanks to you all for doing what you think you could do for the cause you believe in....I am with you in Spirit....XX

Well done ladies, and to the rest of the support team.....great work!
For those confused by the point of it it, Shell and Gazprom both have offices in the Shard.Negative press for large corporations makes shareholders nervous, putting pressure on them do be more ethical. Many companies have changed their supply of wood once it was brought into the public eye that they were contributing to the deforestation of rain forests. We can make a difference

Amazing, inspirational stuff. The publicity this generated was massive. Front page of Evening Standard, all over the news, even politicians talking about it. Got this issue into the public agenda in a huge way...Brilliant.

Both Shell and Gazprom have offices in the Shard, negative press for large corporations makes shareholders nervous, thus putting pressure on them to be more ethical. The Mattel deforestation campaigns success is a great example of how we can make a change through press covered actions. Over 3million people have signed a petition to halt drilling in the Arctic, if this can't stop it then we have to step it up a notch or two.

Well done girls, the utmost respect for you for this.
To those saying " greenfarce" and the likes, imagine if more people made such a public statement of their disapproval of the behaviour of those who ruin irreplaceable swathes of the planet and habitat that cannot recover in time to save those species relying on it in pursuit of a better profit margin...
Maybe then more people would feel that they would be heard if they spoke up.

Antarctic is actually a nature reserve and has been since 1961, meaning no company or government and drill for oil or mine on it, Greenpeace are lobbying governments for the Arctic to have the same status.

amazing idea to get the word out ladies! love you for it! Come help us in Canada please! people need to have it put in their faces that the world doesn't need as much oil as they say we do. we will always need plastic for the health care system but we can use multiple other energy resources for heating cooling, and transportation! Thanks again for looking out for my children, and if you need an extra guy in Canada let me know ;) Cheers

Greenpeace was after publicity to get more donations, that's how these organisations function. But they probably gravely underestimated the importance of the arctic for Russia. It's energy sources give Russia leverage against other global powers, so the arctic is of fundamental importance to Russia. By responding in such a strong manner, Russia is sending a clear message: don't touch our energy supplies. If you are interested in these type of subjects google my website: "lawandgeopolitics, com"

  • @MyNameIsNotKiller

again, what you say make no sense...
oh, yes it does make perfect sense in a way: Greenpeace really do tell people how to live. Tell em how to LIVE - how to survive and not die due to collapse of nature. that's pretty empathic to nature and humanity

It does actually, you just refuse to see it unless if it were on top of Europe's tallest building waving a 4foot sign. Here in America we march long and march hard. Not saying that it changes anything over night, but a lot more people see it. It's easier to get people involved. This video, I just find to be a bit pointless. More of a publicity stunt than anything. Not everyone has a TV or just hanging out with binoculars in other nearby buildings.

I'm sorry, unpopular opinion, but this is one of the most reckless things I have seen in a long time. I was on site as one of the industrial abseilers (professionals) that put the glass onto the upper two thirds of that building and seeing how they "prepared" and "planned" made my blood run cold. In the industry, we would call this "all the gear, no idea".
To the ladies that did this, my question is: I get you want to send a message, but is your own lives worth it? If your answer is yes, then maybe consider what the actual harnesses and ropes are MADE OF. Hint: Most textile climbing equipment are made of polyamid fiber. The irony just in that alone makes me think that people like this should NOT be glorified.

  • @rubixbass2

fair enough for trying to stand up for what you believe in but i cant help but smile at all the petrol and diesel wasted on doing this, them driving there, all there climbing equipment thats flown in from all different parts of the world, all the vans/cars/helicopters of the police, firemen, news reports etc and what for, to stop drilling for oil in new places because we are wasting so much of it and running out of it in the current places

If you had your biology class you should know why your reason isn't valid.
In biology class you learn how we, the whole human race, depend on the arctic and oceans much more than we depend on oil. Since the eco systems of the whole earth depend on the arctic, we as humans also do it. We can't exist without nature. But it doesn't seem like you knew it. Maybe you did skip biology class after all. But don't be sad, it is never too late to join the fight savethearctic(dot)org
