Zac Alley started his coaching career in 2011 at Clemson as a student assistant. Venables started at Clemson in January of 2012. Alley continued on as a graduate assistant until 2018.
During that time Clemson won 2 national titles and had one of the best defenses in the nation with Venables as their DC. Alley learned most of what he knows about defense coaching under Venables. That is why he was hired.

I know you guys commented on OU's defense and how you thought the numbers were questionable, but let me throw some numbers at you that the stats you're looking at don't show. Last year, OU was the 11th most in the amount of passing attempts against them. They had the 14th best pass completion defense in the country. OU held opposing QBs to the number 11th worst passer rating in the country last year. OU also had 19 interceptions and only gave up 16 passing TDs. Remember, this is against 436 passing attempts.
Also, any growing pains doesn't come from our receiving group. There have already been multiple pundits saying they think OU has a top 10 or better receiving room in the country. We lost Drake Stoops to graduation but gained Burkes who will be just as good if not better. We get Andrel Anthony back who was hurt early in the season.

Thanks for commenting and the additional statistics! I hear what you’re saying and I mentioned Andrel Anthony coming back as a plus. Between the schedule and new QB I still feel similar about the outcome of the season, but this team shouldn’t be looked as a walkover game. -Brenden

Kewan Lacey is a composite 4 ⭐️. 24 class is mostly defensive oriented. 25 mostly offensive

As an OU fan Cayden Green transferring over to Missouri is going to be pretty impactful. But as for offense, besides the OL, the wide receiver core is going to be just fine, maybe even top 5 in the NCAA, with veterans coming back and Burks transferring in. Obviously the SEC is going to be a change of scenery, but saying this coming year is going to be a “rebuilding year” is kind of absurd. We’ll be fine. Boomer

Respectfully, how do you feel now after this game? I’m not sniping, simply curious.

@@GridironHQ Dang. Looking back I was definitely more optimistic about OU's performance than reality has shown. While some of the struggles can be attributed to injuries, specifically WR's, it's clear that there are pretty glaring deeper-rooted issues, particularly with the offensive line, questionable play calling by Littrell, and a QB that has confidence issues. It's disappointing to see the team underperform, especially given the talent and potential that is on the sidelines. IMO, the impact this OLine has had has been so significant that it has overshadowed other issues on the team.
It's early in the SEC season, though, and this was a challenging opener. I'm not going to be like most OU fans and say the sky is falling just yet. We'll have a clearer picture about where we stand in the SEC after playing Auburn, LSU, Missouri, and USC (I'm calling 3-1, with a loss against USC or LSU). I'm still optimistic that this team and couching staff can find its rhythm and compete at a high level. Boomer Sooner.

@@brendantillman4520 thanks for your response! I’m curious to see how the QB change helps moving forward. I do think the Defense is also really good. Tough schedule, but sometimes a fresh face at QB can spark the rest of the team.

Most of you people are too young to remember the Big 8 before it was the Big 12 and OU owned the Tigers in both. And they will still own them in the SEC just like they did Texas A&M back then before they joined the SEC.
