I love this song. It completely breaks me when I listen to the mom part, but then bo comes back with the "GOAT CHEEEESE SALAD" Can't help but laugh at that every time lol
Bo's flow: Bo starts off with silly fluff. Then he changes things up in the middle and hits hard with a serious point related to why the fluff was there. Then he returns to the fluff but now the audience can see the recontextualized reason for the fluff. In the case of this song he shows us all sorts of pics and vids of women being silly and creative in order to garner approval on instagram. Then he hits you with her parents died years ago and she is struggling in a world that doesn't have the love it once did for her. This wouldn't be every woman's reason for their instagrams but each woman may have their own reason for seeking approval. Now recontextualized we return to the fluffy pics and they are infused with multiple feelings now instead of just being silly fluff. This is how Bo flows.
So right before it got real we see a 27 birthday image. Then we get "it been a decade sense you've been gone" meaning she lost her mom at 17 and "give a hug and kiss to dad" implies she lost her dad too. Happy ending with her getting married by the end of the song.
the way she (the fictional white woman ofc) talks about her mom makes it seem like her dad died MUCH earlier in her life than her mom. so a 17 year old, not even an adult yet, who was now without both of her parents and would have to enter adulthood by herself. that one verse is just a well of sadness, isn't it.
Yeah a lot of people miss the “ring on her finger from the person that she loves” bit. That’s such a great line, the mom section makes you feel so bad for the woman, but the ring part makes you feel a lot better, and yet worse in a way. Her parents won’t be there for the wedding, or ever meet the love of her life. The wedding will be really hard for her because of that. But it’s also going to be one of the happiest moments in her life, leading to the happiest new chapter of her life. Beautiful.
The message to her mother was supposed to symbolize a real post on a platform full of fakeness. This why the camera widens instead of being a square to show the "whole picture".
Exactly. First image grouping is of a couple holding. I got into social media when my husband died suddenly. I was taking care of a non verbal toddler & dying parent as well. To say I was isolated was putting it mildly. My sis signed me up. It saved my life being able to talk to people and interact. My page looked like a scrap book to my husband a lot. Some days it still does.
This song is a lesson in empathy, fr First shows you why the images are funny, cliche, basic, and then humanizes her as a real person who uses her instagram as a hobby to comfort herself in her loneliness and grief with images that make her happy; then the song picks back up and you hear about her goat cheese salad and whatever and you're like YOU DO THAT, GIRL, YOU GO LIVE YOUR LIFE AND DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO while wiping away the tears and laughing again
There's alot of conjecture on what he's trying to say in that little break in the middle. I don't know if you noticed but the black sides of the screen suddenly get wider and wider and then by the end of the verse they've narrowed back in. I think it's to show insta is only a tiny part of the whole picture. But what would I know ? Haha
That's what I got from the aspect ratio change as well. Once it "opens up" from the square IG frame it becomes a more real understanding of the individual behind the cliché esq photos.
Yeah, I agree. Listening to Bo describe his inspiration for making his movie Eighth Grade impacts how I interpret this song. He talked about seeing a teenage girl sitting at the mall looking at her phone, looking sad. But then she would pop up and smile real wide to take a selfie before retreating back to her former hunched posture. And everyone else was seeing those polished pictures of her, but he was witnessing the real her without the camera. In some ways, I think this song is a grown-up version of that, and during the middle section we get to see the real person with real pain behind the airbrushed photos.
YES to the appreciation of the acting skills, also the double sets of IG words and images. It's amazing how many people miss the middle but you didn't. Really enjoyed this, love Bo Burnham and subbed for more. Edit to request 'We think we know you' from the special, "What."
I love how the imagery and the lyrics tell a story about this girl, but it's not until the real part that it is given context. She seem to be 27 based on the birthday balloon, so she lost her mom at 17 and clearly have no parent left; that's tough... but in the end it seems like the guy she like proposed. The cut with the paint roller seems to be her moving in to her apartment that she is telling her mom about, and so on. Very cleverly constructed.
To me, the middle bit is to show that there is a real person, with real pain, dealing with it in their own way, behind every social media post, and for all that you may think it's silly, frivolous, or 'basic,' it's a tiny snapshot of a portion of someone's life as they choose to show it to you.
I think it is same stupid shit. When someone on IG want attention, he can post something funny or sad. That people don't care if it's about real life or fake. Emotions = views. If you want IG money you have to fake happy or sad story to get views.
Answer me then Eric, what is the symbolic purpose of the aspect ratio widening out so that it is no longer the size that you’d see on an instagram post? Can you answer me that? I’m not saying your interpretation isn’t valid, but it’s a detail you’d have to ignore to reach that conclusion. So I want to know what that means to you, because it’s a very important detail.
The random posts and the cry for momma are the same thing. It's about the quiet loneliness of young adulthood, and how the heavenly images are a cry for attention and love.
You need to really watch inside the special on Netflix it's one of the sadest but inspired comedy that has ever been writin it gives a lot of context to his songs that cone from it
Eff (BARS and ranting) , "Rant" not Kanye version (MASSIVE BARS), Art Is Dead, We Think We Know You, Left Brain Right Brain, How the World Works (inside special), .... Words Words Words will blow your mind and I suggest you look at genius lyrics after you watch it. There are so many double and triple meaning word plays in that song that you will 100% miss. He also directed and wrote a movie called Eighth Grade you should watch. 99% rotten tomatoes out of 300+ critics and like 83% from audience reviews. He also wrote and put together music for the new Sesame Street Movie coming out in 2022 sometime. Dude is a freaking genius ...... I REALLY suggest watching the Inside special front to back and record reactions, then edit them into separate uploads. It's much more powerful watching it in order since the whole thing was filmed over a year+ period of time .... Inside was nommed for 6 Emmys and won 3..... Would have won 4, but Hamilton redid the musical for a TV special (Netflix) and it beat him out... lame
Yeah, this song is all about making fun of the stereotypical images that people post on social media, but then gut punches you with the reality that behind all these profiles are real people with real problems. Brilliantly conveyed with the aspect ratio difference and tonal change in the song. In this case, a woman lost her mom 10 years ago and is now engaged. Then you find out that she lost her dad as well, when she tells mom to give a hug and kiss to dad ... so sad.

Yeah, the implication that maybe she posts online searching for validation because she can't get it from her parents.

The first image is a couple holding hands. The whole song is a progression if their story. I love this song on so many levels.
Bo! Hey man, you GOTTA start at the beginning. The best way to appreciate Bo Burnham is to see his growth over the years. Absolutely brilliant!

@@andreassmed2255 Bro, he doesn't care. It's clear that what he's saying isn't what Bo's saying. He's talking about his own social media philosophy.
@Ren9077 You what the crazy thing is? I already figured that out…
W for dysfunctional for figuring out the some called white woman's instagram is about a white woman's instagram🔥🔥🙏🔥🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
All jokes man love your content
His acting and the sets definitely make this lol. Great reaction.
Straight facts!! 🤣 Even the serious part wasn't too heavy and he brought it back around nicely to the lighter mood. All in all a good song 😃
This dude can be compelling with any subject. Its quite amazing.
Even more incredible when you realise he did this alone in his shed!
