      @@MrSquare To me, a cynical person, it was to focus on using the passing of loved one for likes online. Rather than doing something like go clean up the gravesite or leave flowers they would often just post about it and make it baout them instead.

      @@TheTaratsu It’s not like everyone can visit their loved ones graves (My grandparents graves are in a city away from my family in their home) all of the time due to distance or other factors, and it is common for the bereaved now a days to post messages to passed loved ones, it doesn’t necessarily make it un-genuine. And the song and the person itself doesn’t feel like there bragging personal to me, there not highlighting themselves nor pitying themselves, there expressing there gratefulness in their life to their mom, and telling them how their fine. I suppose as a self proclaimed cynical person, you can interpret it as you will.

      @@MrSquare to me they get more genuinely happy. The first two verses seem mocking in nature, but once he reconnects you with the real person behind the photos and the tragedy they've been through, the snapshots make me think of how you can still find these little moments of happiness in life. Like wow, this person (all of us) has been through so much, but they can still find joy in simple things like goat cheese salads and their boyfriend.

  • @RavixAryss
    @RavixAryss 2 года назад +1339

    I love how he's not really mocking the people, in fact he reminds you there's a real person behind all the pageantry, he's mocking the medium that has cultivated that behavior.

    • @devious12
      @devious12 2 года назад +32

      But he is mocking them. In fact, it seems that the entire point of injecting that "sentimental" moment in this song has gone over a lot of people's head. This person's instagram is filled with mundane and cliche things and then right in the middle of it is a rememberance post about her mom. Only to have the very next post be a picture of a "Goat Cheese Salad". Bo is showing how tacky these posts are, and how all real sentimental meaning behind them are completely lost when the posts before and after it are just the same cliche "white woman" things everyone posts. Almost as if she was just posting it for the views.

    • @Sphurcle
      @Sphurcle 2 года назад +182

      @@devious12 I disagree, Bo's cinematography clearly shows the borders "opening up" as that person is having a honest moment only for it to close in again and THEN go back into the "silliness", and even then there are a few more "serious" notes after that segment, such as the "three little words; a couple of doves; and a ring on her finger from the person that she loves; Is this heaven?", its changing the perspective of someone seeing these post and being satire to the perspective of the one posting them. I believe that he's saying that these people have actual struggles and motivations despite seeming "Basic". However these Important moments are delegated into comments or a single post in a sea of other "meaningless" posts.

    • @vaishnavisingh9244
      @vaishnavisingh9244 2 года назад +20

      @@devious12 I personally think that the fakeness the character is potraying is due to the fact that she lost her parents, so she never really had her "fun", why would you want to go deep on instagram of all things? It just sounds stupid, to pretend that there should be real sentiment behind your every post. It is fake, but isn't that's how it's meant to be? Whenever people express real things on social media, it is treated as a sterotype rather than something deep and profound. How the works of great artists and writers become something as mundane as a caption and I personally think that this is okay too.

    • @Stardust_Lily
      @Stardust_Lily 2 года назад +47

      @@devious12 I could just post reasoning like everyone else, but the easier counterpoint is just that Bo has said you're wrong lol. When going through and talking about the different tracks a bit, he pretty explicitly said this song is poking fun but also trying to show people that they're judgmental assholes about people they don't know and can't know on the internet based on an instagram feed or twitter threads.

    • @TheGoIsWin21

      I think this is the best way to approach it. Recognizing that humans are just human, with weaknesses, and these mediums encourage these vapid behaviors and equally encourage us to dehumanize the person behind them. It's both calling us all out for buying in to this encouragement while acknowledging that it's not exactly their fault, in a vacuum. Very nuanced, very clever, and overall the perfection Bo Burnham always delivers on.

      same thing with Ceilings; I'm in a relationship, but I remember being painfully in love with a friend of mine for like a decade (really grateful for that experience btw, he was cool enough abt it, I knew it wasn't gonna happen but I loved having him around, so I was really thrilled when he started dating another super close friend of mine. other people struggle with jealousy, idk if that experience happened bc i dont or if i don't bc of that experience 🤷🏻‍♀️) and that song took me back to those painful, but also _wonderful_ feelings.

    It's kind of Bo's wheelhouse to make funny songs that you laugh at, then pull the rug out from under you. He is the master of the gut punch. Make you complicit it something uncomfortable, and force you to reconcile the two within the song. He does it masterfully in songs like, "Kanye Rant (Can't Handle This)", "All Eyes on Me" and, "How The World Works".
    He also talks a lot in his songs about the act of performing, and what that means to him. In this song, I think that Bo realized that, "White women of instagram" are ripe for making fun of, with their self-centered need to be the center of attention, but also realizes that what they are doing isn't all that different from what he is doing. He is trying to curate an internet audience to pay attention to him, he is just as self absorbed, which is why he puts himself literally into the role of a instagrammer. The moment of opening up (Literally) and being vulnerable, seeing the humanity in another, reflects his own emotional needs. He can make fun of them in a good natured way, but he knows he isn't better then them. He isn't even different from them.

    Dude, don't know who you are or anything about you, random popup so to speak, but man, I really enjoy your reactions and commentary, you add so much back drop and story to the content your reacting to I love it, it's really great. it's so interesting because you mention things I have not thought of, as for Bo Burnham, he too is awesome, I love all his work and yes, in most everything he does, it's generally comedy mixed in with a serious side and like you said, he is probably referencing his own complexities as well as everyone else, showing us all how seriously phony our lives are at times. my view is that most of everything presented to us is an illusion of someone else creation and I think Bo does a very good job showing us all how truly absurd things can be.
    Anyway, thanks for your reactions, I really like them a lot, very good.

  • @creativism8407

    Took me several listens before I linked the repeated line “is this heaven?” to the middle section - then it makes a lot more sense.
    I’m not really a fan of reaction videos generally but the few I’ve seen from you have been really thoughtful and you pick up on things that others don’t. You should definitely look at a lot more Bo Burnham - his earlier raps have so much wordplay and they go over the heads of most reactors I’ve seen.

    You’re taken on a journey with catchy pop, humour and Instagram visuals. Representative of how contrived “all” of these scenes are, as you stated, how performative it all is - then you’re thrown a curve ball. Reminding everyone that however contrived there are still real people with a lot of real feelings/problems/issues (however you’d like to define it) on the other side.

      In my mind the song at first seems to ridicule the simple and repating nature of internet positivity

    Now this might not be your thing so no worries, but have you ever considered reacting to “nerdcore” artists like Dan Bull or The Stupendium who make songs/raps about video games. There’s a big market out there for those kind of reactions and those two in particular are excellent and they tell a story with their work so it’s enjoyable without any knowledge of the games in question

    I really like how you explained the bit about the parents. What you said about performing for the camera really resonated with me as well. Whenever I listen to this song it makes me think about how we use everything online to perform, even grief can get performative. Honestly I am guilty of having posted about lost loved ones myself, but now in hindsight I wonder what for? My dead Nan and Grandad aren't checking Facebook or Instagram, so they probably don't care. The bit in the song is emotional for sure, but we still don't actually learn anything about her mom other than they used to sit on the porch together, and her dad feels like an after thought. What she does put out on the internet is her own achievements. Now, I know I am probably way too cynical, but it feels a little performative to me.

    I really like the idea (but it's just an idea, it's not like "THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED") that the character does all these curated, basic-white-girl instragram stuff not because she's performing for the internet, but because these are the things she would have shared with her mother. That her entire instagram is actually a memorial for her mother, and other people seeing it is kind of a side effect that she doesn't really care about one way or the other.
