A rare breed of great leader who are not available today. As an African student in India in the early 80's and having read the Indian history, I never read or encountered such a powerhouse of a leader in the entire Asian world.
India's 1st Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehruji visit to USA during early 60s and meeting with one of most iconic American Presidents John F Kennedy is a historic moment.This is one of rare occasions where we get to see a colored video of Nehruji and this was one of those rare occasions where a video of Panditji and his daughter Indira Gandhiji (who became India's 1st lady Prime Minister) together.
What is more impressive was that this was actually his third visit to the US and not his first and even then the public treated it as a first visit. People of all races - young and old stood waiting at the airport to see him and cheer him. It is a sign of great respect and excellent manners - at least that is how I saw it.
A highly educated principled heavy with experience of the India which emerged from slavery to this present sloggish illiterate uncultured incompetent incapable goons n jail birds holding the reigns of our great nation. It's a horrible disgrace we have a unqualified disrespectful indifferent hard nut as PM.
The respect and admiration in USA and the world towards Pandit Nehru was for the individual. India in 1960’s was not what India is today. It was hardly 10 to 15 years after India became a republic and was not economically or otherwise a powerhouse. Pandit Nehru’s charm and personality is unmatched. The critics of Nehru today completely ignore the ground realities that prevailed then. Nehruji’s policies, were shaped considering what was good for the country based on where India stood then. Some of his policies did go wrong, but that is in hindsight. The faults in his decisions were more on account of the fact that he was a gentleman and expected the leaders elsewhere were also like him. But the world leaders, especially China, Pakistan etc were of different mindset which he failed to realise, more because Nehru was not cunning. His economic policies were also based on the fact that India then was poor and had little resources. The present day industry tycoons were not there and their presence was less noticeable. So, the Government had to step in with planned economy model. Nowhere in the world, except in Banana republics, the present leaders find fault with their predecessors like it is being propagated in India.
Of course! It is not to be taken as a blame on Mr. Nehru. It is the progress India has made since that time! There is no doubt that to day we have clearly shifted from one of a poor nation to a powerful one! It is made evident by the words and action of the present PM, Mr. Modi! Unfortunately we still try to belittle one or the other!
I will say that PM Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajeev Gandhi did handle the situations and economical models that were the best options during those times, considering lack of our industrial support from private enterprise. Please keep in mind, Rajeev Gandhi was the one who opened up the multinational companies to setup their operations during this PM years. That opened up jobs and access for an average person in india to leap into the technology.
A leader's first and foremost duty is towards his country - the people who elected him/her. The leaders of China/Pakistan did what they did to safeguard their country. PM Nehru or rather the officers advising him should have anticipated that. The current leadership's focus appears to be to build support for their party with the masses that are not very educated. The easiest way to spoon feed loyalty to a party is to bash the opponent I guess. So personally i don't think the current PM undermines what Pt Nehru did. For all u know he may personally hold him very high. But his current position needs him to bash his predecessor to build support for his party specially in the hinterlands. India is very vast and diverse. For many it makes us so uneasy to be able to identify with this embarrassing facets of current India.

The grace and sincerity reflected by President Kennedy through his mannerisms for Pandit Nehru was so genuine and remarkable. It’s out of the world now. And both these leaders didn’t live long after this historic meeting of theirs in Nov-1961. RIP, both of them.
The video illustrates stature of Pt. Nehru in the world. The respect and love given to him by President Kennedy and other U.Sdignitaries is unprecedented considerng the fact that India was a very poor and weak in those days. Thanks for sharing this valuable piece of history.

What a grand, what a lavish reception the Americans gave to Prime Minister Nehru and Mrs. Indira Gandhi. Both the PM and his daughter looked so classy, dignified and good looking. And Mr. Nehru spoke so well. This shows that education and breeding are of great importance indeed for a Prime Minister of any country.

Swami Vivekanand had said ' the temples of the modern India will be industries and foodball grounds ". Nehru ji priotorized education,science and technology in all areas which propagated tremendously diversified India towards a self sustaining economy rising from 96% illiteracy, hunger , terrible poverty and backwardness.

Pandit Nehru was a global leader. His voice was heard and given importance to not only by the heads of the governments of the world but also by the intellectuals world over.

He was not willing to advancement of our defense forces. It's a written history. Our soldiers were brave enough but without sophisticated weapons and even without winter jackets and shoes. They had mostly only 303 rifels. Most of the chines troops were members of Chinese communist Red Army. Nehru ji underestimated threat from neighbors that's why whole nation paid the price.
@@RajuPrasad-qw1jrs it's a written history but reading your history without knowing the reason behind every action or decisions of leaders of those times is a waste of reading and it will harm your mentality. India at the time of Independence had nothing. 70% of the people were in poverty. You think it was a good idea for a poor nation with zero infrastructure (hospitals, schools, universities, research centres) to invest money on advanced army equipments when 70% of it's people don't even have food and suffering from Malnutrition? He chose to invest in people of India who were suffering from poverty and illiteracy rather than the defence of the nation. Is that a crime? And his investments on the infrastructure and people is the reason our economy is booming today if he had invested in army in early days rather than infrastructure there would be no difference between us and Pakistan today as Pakistan did exactly that.

Thank you for posting a rare video from archives, otherwise we would have missed this. Humbleness and dignity were the order of life of such heads of Government of world's largest democracies. Its unfortunate that some members are making comments on the attire, looks and character. This is because they don't know the social, economic and other circumstances existing those days. As one friend mentioned most of such members have not even borne at at time and are,being carried away by the lies and inappropriate things being circulated wantonly to defame our great leaders of the past. They were not politicians, they were not heads of governments, but they are real statesmen. The country has been built on the very foundation laid by those leaders. 🎉

US was & is never friendly with India. During the tenure of following US Presidents we had wars with our neighbors Harry Truman : 1947/ 48 Pak war John F Kennedy : 1962 China Lyndon Johnson : 1965 Pak war Richard Nixon : 1971 Pak war Bill Clinton : 1999 Kargil war None of the above US Presidents came to India's help. They used our country only as market for their products. In 1971 indo Pak war Richard Nixon teamed up with UK , all Gulf countries and even asked China to join against India. Only USSR helped us .
The History shows US has supported Pakistan during India pak war in 70's .... Nothing was in good terms with India and US, till China became a rival with US. (Enemies enemy is my friend concept). Hopefully there could be a better understanding.

The greatest dichotomy is USA dropped the only 2 nuclear bombs in its arsenal at that time in 1945 on Japan, yet America-Japan friendship and trust is most notable and praiseworthy even today. Can you imagine if this happened to India, would India have ever forgiven USA or continued the bond of friendship with USA ?? India is unable to patch up with China or Pakistan. If USA or Russia had a border with India, India would have problem with them too. The fact is India is unable to get along well with any of its neighbors. SAARC has sunk in the Indian Ocean, while ASEAN has gone from strength-to-strength.

This documentary displaying the genuine warmth and good manners shown by a host nation towards the leader of a country with such polish, style and sophistication and in turn the perfect example of dignified warmth and intellect with which it is received - has all but dissapeared like it never existed. The concern for international co-operation towards the peace and safety of the world is never present when leaders meet these days. The political arena has become a playground for power hungry politicians - bullies who all want the power and glory - as Nehru rightly said the UN was to be the monitor for the playground of the world politics where decision makers played and strayed at times and could once be pulled up when doing so- but sadly the UN is failing badly - and can not control wayward countries anymore and no-one is listening. Also the absolute trust and tact shown towards the press is what it was all about. The press reported what was said exactly - mostly - and no one was accused of lies and "story lines" - back then people could rely on press meetings and reports as being factual.
Much of what you say rings true but it’s not all that cynical today globally, though India is off the charts, the worst ever showing in our post independence history. The UN does play a major role in curbing wayward activities, obviously not all such activities. In 1948 soon after our independence the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This international document enshrines the rights and freedoms of all human beings. Of the 58 members of the United Nations at the time, 48 voted in favour, none against, eight abstained, and two did not vote. [Excerpt from Wikipedia]. Based on these rights and over the years establishing precedents, countries sought permission of the UN for wars. Great trouble was taken to justify war actions, some based on lies, Bush Jr, some on facts and commitments held, Bush Sr. I have lived in this region through these wars. You are right that the UN is no perfect body but from 58 countries to 193 countries it has brought order to our world though more may be desired. Lastly you mention ‘sophistication’. I find this quality inserted in ‘form’ was the condition of political correctness of that time. I’m not sure it served any purpose except for external presentation. I think sophistication is important more in ‘content’, how we think ? how we feel towards each other, ‘nationwise’ ? what values we hold individually and what translates as national character. The sum total understanding of these I think is sophistication.
US was very powerful - still the warmth and courtesy to visitor. was clearly visible. Kennedy escorting an Asian leader was rare. Absent was Jai Shankar style arrogance ..

When I would go to the movies as a little girl we saw news reports like this all the time and the hall was silent because everyone was interested. People understood what he was there for and the same was the case with other leaders - even as a little girl I used to feet strangely hopeful and comforted with words like “achieving world peace” or “ prevention of nuclear warfare” - I am sure the grownups got a lot more out these news clips - my point is that as far as the public is concerned and we are talking about the Mr & Mrs too busy making ends meet to be bothered watching a leaders visit to another country these day - especially when there has been no revelations on the content matter of “talks” conducted and if at all there is - then certainly no one can be sure about what is to happen next - there is something very sophisticated about leaders getting together to discuss strategies to ensure world peace. It is about us - instead of who has the most “power”- and is done in secret. Just look how they stand together on that one day when they gathered three times to discuss things - calmly smiling in unison and you can tell things are flowing well and both sides are happy with the progress. It sends out a certain message to the viewers - a message that clearly indicates that two people are on the same side and there possibly could be wonderful developments possible because of their common goals and what is more - it is all about the people of the world and their safety and wellbeing -Even the press conference was such a civilised affair questions were handed in and he answered them in a modest and informative way beginning with a speech about the state of affairs in India and how the people are - no mention of religion - just what everyone is focussing on to improve the wellbeing of the country. Factual stuff delivered intelligently without any theatrics or self-adulation. “Mr and Mrs struggling to try to make ends meet” actually did watch these news reports back then and with great interest and unlike today were very well informed as the documentaries were circulated in various languages as well. This is a very good way to allow the people of a country to know what the heck is going on. It worked well- sophistication certainly play a very big part in documentaries like this. Some of these visuals remind me of certain lines from Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If” - sadly these lines are no longer applicable today due to the quality of politics and leadership we are witnessing.

India's 1st Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehruji visit to USA during early 60s and meeting with one of most iconic American Presidents John F Kennedy is a historic moment.This is one of rare occasions where we get to see a colored video of Nehruji and this was one of those rare occasions where a video of Panditji and his daughter Indira Gandhiji (who became India's 1st lady Prime Minister) together.
What is more impressive was that this was actually his third visit to the US and not his first and even then the public treated it as a first visit. People of all races - young and old stood waiting at the airport to see him and cheer him. It is a sign of great respect and excellent manners - at least that is how I saw it.

The respect and admiration in USA and the world towards Pandit Nehru was for the individual. India in 1960’s was not what India is today. It was hardly 10 to 15 years after India became a republic and was not economically or otherwise a powerhouse. Pandit Nehru’s charm and personality is unmatched. The critics of Nehru today completely ignore the ground realities that prevailed then. Nehruji’s policies, were shaped considering what was good for the country based on where India stood then. Some of his policies did go wrong, but that is in hindsight. The faults in his decisions were more on account of the fact that he was a gentleman and expected the leaders elsewhere were also like him. But the world leaders, especially China, Pakistan etc were of different mindset which he failed to realise, more because Nehru was not cunning. His economic policies were also based on the fact that India then was poor and had little resources. The present day industry tycoons were not there and their presence was less noticeable. So, the Government had to step in with planned economy model. Nowhere in the world, except in Banana republics, the present leaders find fault with their predecessors like it is being propagated in India.
Of course! It is not to be taken as a blame on Mr. Nehru. It is the progress India has made since that time! There is no doubt that to day we have clearly shifted from one of a poor nation to a powerful one! It is made evident by the words and action of the present PM, Mr. Modi! Unfortunately we still try to belittle one or the other!
I will say that PM Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajeev Gandhi did handle the situations and economical models that were the best options during those times, considering lack of our industrial support from private enterprise. Please keep in mind, Rajeev Gandhi was the one who opened up the multinational companies to setup their operations during this PM years. That opened up jobs and access for an average person in india to leap into the technology.
A leader's first and foremost duty is towards his country - the people who elected him/her. The leaders of China/Pakistan did what they did to safeguard their country. PM Nehru or rather the officers advising him should have anticipated that. The current leadership's focus appears to be to build support for their party with the masses that are not very educated. The easiest way to spoon feed loyalty to a party is to bash the opponent I guess. So personally i don't think the current PM undermines what Pt Nehru did. For all u know he may personally hold him very high. But his current position needs him to bash his predecessor to build support for his party specially in the hinterlands. India is very vast and diverse. For many it makes us so uneasy to be able to identify with this embarrassing facets of current India.
& those goons r making an effort to criticise him who are known not for real development but Destruction of Peace,Humanity,Freedom & Love.

Pandit Nehru was a global leader. His voice was heard and given importance to not only by the heads of the governments of the world but also by the intellectuals world over.

He was not willing to advancement of our defense forces. It's a written history. Our soldiers were brave enough but without sophisticated weapons and even without winter jackets and shoes. They had mostly only 303 rifels. Most of the chines troops were members of Chinese communist Red Army. Nehru ji underestimated threat from neighbors that's why whole nation paid the price.

India at the time of Independence had nothing. 70% of the people were in poverty. You think it was a good idea for a poor nation with zero infrastructure (hospitals, schools, universities, research centres) to invest money on advanced army equipments when 70% of it's people don't even have food and suffering from Malnutrition? He chose to invest in people of India who were suffering from poverty and illiteracy rather than the defence of the nation. Is that a crime? And his investments on the infrastructure and people is the reason our economy is booming today if he had invested in army in early days rather than infrastructure there would be no difference between us and Pakistan today as Pakistan did exactly that.

John F Kennedy : 1962 China
Lyndon Johnson : 1965 Pak war
Richard Nixon : 1971 Pak war
Bill Clinton : 1999 Kargil war
None of the above US Presidents came to India's help. They used our country only as market for their products.
In 1971 indo Pak war Richard Nixon teamed up with UK , all Gulf countries and even asked China to join against India.
Only USSR helped us .
Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. But his Ambassador to India Kenneth Galbraith gifted India IBM Computers to be installed in IIT Kanpur.
The History shows US has supported Pakistan during India pak war in 70's .... Nothing was in good terms with India and US, till China became a rival with US. (Enemies enemy is my friend concept). Hopefully there could be a better understanding.

India is unable to patch up with China or Pakistan.
If USA or Russia had a border with India, India would have problem with them too. The fact is India is unable to get along well with any of its neighbors. SAARC has sunk in the Indian Ocean, while ASEAN has gone from strength-to-strength.

This documentary displaying the genuine warmth and good manners shown by a host nation towards the leader of a country with such polish, style and sophistication and in turn the perfect example of dignified warmth and intellect with which it is received - has all but dissapeared like it never existed. The concern for international co-operation towards the peace and safety of the world is never present when leaders meet these days. The political arena has become a playground for power hungry politicians - bullies who all want the power and glory - as Nehru rightly said the UN was to be the monitor for the playground of the world politics where decision makers played and strayed at times and could once be pulled up when doing so- but sadly the UN is failing badly - and can not control wayward countries anymore and no-one is listening. Also the absolute trust and tact shown towards the press is what it was all about. The press reported what was said exactly - mostly - and no one was accused of lies and "story lines" - back then people could rely on press meetings and reports as being factual.
Much of what you say rings true but it’s not all that cynical today globally, though India is off the charts, the worst ever showing in our post independence history.
The UN does play a major role in curbing wayward activities, obviously not all such activities.
In 1948 soon after our independence the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
This international document enshrines the rights and freedoms of all human beings.

Based on these rights and over the years establishing precedents, countries sought permission of the UN for wars. Great trouble was taken to justify war actions, some based on lies, Bush Jr, some on facts and commitments held, Bush Sr.
I have lived in this region through these wars.
You are right that the UN is no perfect body but from 58 countries to 193 countries it has brought order to our world though more may be desired.
Lastly you mention ‘sophistication’. I find this quality inserted in ‘form’ was the condition of political correctness of that time. I’m not sure it served any purpose except for external presentation.
I think sophistication is important more in ‘content’, how we think ? how we feel towards each other, ‘nationwise’ ? what values we hold individually and what translates as national character. The sum total understanding of these I think is sophistication.
US was very powerful - still the warmth and courtesy to visitor. was clearly visible. Kennedy escorting an Asian leader was rare. Absent was Jai Shankar style arrogance ..

When I would go to the movies as a little girl we saw news reports like this all the time and the hall was silent because everyone was interested. People understood what he was there for and the same was the case with other leaders - even as a little girl I used to feet strangely hopeful and comforted with words like “achieving world peace” or “ prevention of nuclear warfare” - I am sure the grownups got a lot more out these news clips - my point is that as far as the public is concerned and we are talking about the Mr & Mrs too busy making ends meet to be bothered watching a leaders visit to another country these day - especially when there has been no revelations on the content matter of “talks” conducted and if at all there is - then certainly no one can be sure about what is to happen next - there is something very sophisticated about leaders getting together to discuss strategies to ensure world peace. It is about us - instead of who has the most “power”- and is done in secret. Just look how they stand together on that one day when they gathered three times to discuss things - calmly smiling in unison and you can tell things are flowing well and both sides are happy with the progress. It sends out a certain message to the viewers - a message that clearly indicates that two people are on the same side and there possibly could be wonderful developments possible because of their common goals and what is more - it is all about the people of the world and their safety and wellbeing -Even the press conference was such a civilised affair questions were handed in and he answered them in a modest and informative way beginning with a speech about the state of affairs in India and how the people are - no mention of religion - just what everyone is focussing on to improve the wellbeing of the country. Factual stuff delivered intelligently without any theatrics or self-adulation. “Mr and Mrs struggling to try to make ends meet” actually did watch these news reports back then and with great interest and unlike today were very well informed as the documentaries were circulated in various languages as well. This is a very good way to allow the people of a country to know what the heck is going on. It worked well- sophistication certainly play a very big part in documentaries like this. Some of these visuals remind me of certain lines from Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If” - sadly these lines are no longer applicable today due to the quality of politics and leadership we are witnessing.
