Thanks. I took my dad's 67 Bug in to get the alarm fixed and they yanked the handbrake up too far. They also parked it on the street and got a parking ticket. They took care of the ticket but owner didn't call back about fixing the brake. I searched ur video and couldn't wait to get home to try fixing it. It took me 5 minutes to fix it, (it took me 30 minutes to set-up my tools, lol!). Excellent video and instructions! Thanks again!
This video saved my life or at least saved my 1960 KG, was on a road trip when I stop to get some gas. Pulled my EB and the button assembly flew out the other end. Didn't know what to do other than to put my car in gear to keep it from rolling. Did a quick search on RUclips while putting in some gas, found this video and 30 mins later I was back on the road with a working EB.... THANK YOU!!!!
Just purchased a 66 vw bug. It's been over 30 years since my last one, so i'm trying to dig deep in my memory banks in doing simple basic repairs. This video was fantastic in getting my emergency brake back to normal. Thanks and I'm sure i'll be watching many more of your videos!
Thank so, so much for the help. I improvised and used a flat head screwdriver after loosening the brake adjustment screws plate. Without your video there is no way I would have tried it. God bless.
I also want to thank you for the video. I thought I was going to have to shovel out a butt load of money on a new brake lever assembly, but was able to fix it in less than 5 minutes after watching your video. Much appreciation.
I was able to fix my handbrake before by wiggling it around tons until it eventually worked right. Your video turned an hours frustation bodging into a 3 minute fix. Bravo, sir!
+vw64manyrd Soooo... I thought you'd be amused by an update to this story. The handbrake cables were totally shot on my Bug, which is why my handbrake kept going off the end of the ratchet. So I replaced them along with new shoes etc. I was rebuilding the handbrake mechanism and I did exactly what you say not to do.... and end up dropping the ratchet plate deep into the central chassis tube. So... now everything's on hold until the postman arrives with a telescopic magnet and one of those springy grabbers from eBay. D'oh, I'm such a doofus!
What a help this has been. I appreciate greatly the time you took to make it and your willingness to share your knowledge. I've got to run ...I've got a handbrake to fix! Thanks again!
Your video was helpful for me. Wife told me (she just bought a 73 beetle) that the e-brake handle was pulling up too far and not holding the brakes. I found the button was not connected. Was able to re-connect it and got it working again after adjusting the brakes. Thanks!
Hats off to you sir for making this straight forward video. I was able to fix the same problem with your instructions. Tip for those with the same issue, towards the end of the video makes more sense but consider watching the beginning also for basic understanding. Thanks again sir.
You have a way of explaining things that's wildly helpful to me. I was able to repair my brake in about 5 minutes after watching this, and, believe me, I'm no mechanic. Thank you for this.
Wow! I watched this video and was able to fix my parking brake handle in about 2 minutes of trial and error! I noticed after being perpendicular with the bottom loop, my button started to go sideways (the more I pressed it in), just like you had mentioned. I went just a little bit slower, and sort of 'worked' the button to stay in alignment while the bottom loop and claw switched positions. Got the claw back on, pulled brake up too high AGAIN, and realized that was my issue. Now I know to only pull the brake up exactly 10-clicks. THANK YOU for your wisdom and kindness!
Zach Allenton glad this video helped! you might need to adjust the rear brakes if the handle pulls up too far. I adjust my parking brakes when new shoes and adjusted correctly. when the parking brake begins to come up too high it is time to adjust the rear brakes. Thanks for watching and the positive comment!
Absolutely excellent video. I self induced this problem and you showed me how to fix it. I used a little screw driver instead of a bent clothes hanger. I did have to loosen the emergency brake cables and remove their metal piece from the little knob before I could get the detent to rotate. But it worked perfectly just like you demonstrated so well both off and and on the car. Once again I'm impressed by the simple genius of these old bugs. Mine is a 73 beetle that is roached and I'm reviving. Too rusty to make worth restoring but I'm having fun tinkering on it.
Thanks so much! Had no idea what wrong was that and thought about taking it to the shop. Literally took me 5 min to fix it on my Audi. Thanks sooooo much!
you my friend are my new VW T4 hand break god. I stripped my 97 van interior out including the dash, and hand break, so i could custom paint them which i did, all went back with great success and ease all except for the hand break which has had me stumpped for two weeks wondering how the hell it goes back in. thank you for sharing this video. :-)
Messed with this problem for an hour yesterday, no good. Wished I watched this first! You made this prob a quick fix!!! Thanks a bunch, great video! Pete.
Thank you so much for sharing my friend! Was looking for something like this but found nothing about it in my country. Followed all your steps and had 100% success. Only problem was that wife got mad at me because of the lost hanger lol... Best wishes from Brazil :)
one of the most informative videos I've seen. It actually worked! Did take two people cuz I couldn't hold the handle up far enough and push in the latch at the same time,
One helpful tip is to loosen the cable adjustment at the handle so you can pull the handle up far enough to flip the little ratchet pawl. Then retighten, and readjust the rear brakes as you pointed out. Your video was helpful, thanks.
Thanks a lot!!! the second version you showed, at around 12:16, was helpful on my 1982 Porsche 924. For anybody else doing this on a 924. The job is a lot easier if you take off the whole handle assembly from the car (two bolts), and mount the "tikker" that way.
Glad it was helpful... I don't have a 924 and haven't had to do it on the 912 I have left but may have to sometime. Thanks for commenting and Thanks for watching!
Thanks!!! back in Biz Wasn't sure how to fix it. Your video saved me! I have secretly (through your video) retained my status at the house as "the guy who can fix anything"
Thanks...just what I was looking for...I dropped the damn ratchet piece into the tunnel...but it should be ready to go back together as soon as I walk out there...I appreciate you making this video....
Thanks for the video. I was able to fix it in just a few minutes (though adjusting brake is another day). Instead of a spare wire hangar (rare around here now) I used a wing from one of the fat paper clips in my desk. Worked perfectly. Cheers!
Your video was extremely well filmed very clear and well planned out. you should help the other fools who post vids that are unwatchable. thank you from southern ca.
Damn, nicely done Sir! You explained it so I could get my e-brake back together again after pulling it too high. This video is three times longer than it needs to be, though. You keep repeating yourself.

good video thats how i do it too its pretty straight forward ,, the reason why it comes out it because there is too much slack because the emergency brake bar in the drum has to much wear on it if you can move it back and forth while doing your brakes its worn out need new one or fix old one if you can weld . thanks
