Eluveitie are famous because they often use Gaulish as language for their songs. This thanx to their long-established collaboration with the University of Vienna and other international experts of Celtic civilization.
No easy job, because we know very little of that most noble language: only a handful of inscription came to us, some terms and toponymes transmitted by roman writers, or picked up from french, swiss and north-italian dialects. We have some small vocabulary and some written records in medieval Gaulish (V-VI century) written in the french and swiss abbeys for countrylife purposes, but they are corrupted by Frankish and Latin; thus, original gaulish syntax or grammar rules remain obscure. Phonetics, spelling and pronounciation are unknown: we cannot make out how Gauls spelt the words that they engraved on stones and tablets now in our museums.
And this because after subjugation of Cisalpine and Transalpine Gaul, the Romans launched a massive "romanization", a real cultural genocide, forbidding by law any public show of celtic culture: language, tradition, rituals. Even clothing.
I think these swiss guys deserve a monument for their noble effort to bring back to life a long forgotten culture, which is actually native to their land (Switzerland, the celtic Helvetia) and, I'd add, deeply interwoven with today's alpine/european culture and tradition.

That's history ...The Gauls did the the same to the pre-Celtic people who lived in Gaul before them.
+Lynx6871 We have no written account. We only know that the celts replaced pre-celtic cultures as the most prevalent culture of the area, not specifically how it happened. There were armed conflicts, as usual, but not necessarily conquest. The demographic shift could have also been simply the normal result of the massive migration into pre-celtic lands, with the celts getting settling rights through marriage, and ending up with their culture overtaking the pre-celtic ones. Not all cultural genocides are entirely violent; assimilation is just as effective, as evidenced by the case of Canada and many other products of modern colonization.
I'm a Metal Head and my wife is a Celt, In some ways Eluveitie have given us something we both can enjoy.
This album is an absolute masterpiece.

It's about time more people are taking notice of Eluveitie!! They are beyond talented! One of the best metal bands out there today!!

To folk metal, this seems a lot more modern. Or influenced by a modern style, which is pretty rare amongst folk metal bands.

This is so different to what I am subjected to, here, in the states, and it's just fucking awesome! They're so unique, with how they incorporate such a vast array of instruments into a death metal song, and make it all work just blows my mind. Not to mention the guys vocals! I listen to a bunch of different genres of metal, and other kinds of music, but Eluveitie is probably in my top 5 bands of all time. Just excellent.
Saw them in Jersey with Children of Bodom... these guys are amazing.
I got to see these guys in Newcastle with Devildriver in 2010, never thought I'd see a mosh pit kick off to a flute solo :D

I know what you mean. A few years ago I would have rolled my eyes or snickered when hearing screaming like this. But now there are actually a few bands, who I enjoy listening to. These beeing one of them.
I know I'm not supposed to "enjoy" death- or black metal. But then I don't think I'll embrace the goat-sacrificing and blood-drinking life style. I just like the music.
