In this guitar lesson we will take an in depth look at the main riff to Metallica's "Battery".
As always, this Battery guitar lesson is just going to focus on the main riff to this much loved Metallica classic, but I will complete the entire whenever I hear from enough of you guys that you really want to finish it. So until the note-for-note lessons for the whole song are here, lets take a quick at this main riff.
This riff will challenge just about every metal and rock guitarist. It requires a machine gun like picking hand technique along with extremely quick left hand shifts.
Just as I demonstrate in the video lesson, I think it is best to get the picking hand pattern down first before attempting to put it all together with the fretting hand.
Pay close attention to the portion of the lesson where I demonstrate the picking pattern. Then, practice that for a few days until you can play it pretty much up to speed on just one string before adding the fret hand.
Then when you put everything together, practice each section of the riff separately like I teach it in the lesson. That will assure that you can get everything together without getting sloppy.
Try to keep the palm muting tight and the rhythms very precise. Also, focus on keeping your picking hand wrist and forearm very relaxed. Keeping the picking hand tension at the smallest amount possible will help you get everything up to speed while making sure your technique stays solid.

@@connmolnar1065 dave mustaine is a great guitar player but james hetfield had a 99.98 percent precision he was unreal while playing live and how they played really fast back in the 80-90’s during live shows while singing he was just something else
But I think Megadeth songs are more complicated. A lot more.

@@nocontextmemes2617 I thought it was only good to learn the mechanics of playing but this Guy is nonetheless right, you gotta feel the song for the best results too. Instead of just trying to finish it and I’ve been playing for one year now so I’m just some intermediate but if i could give alternate picking advice just practice the up down up down motion through all the strings to get the feel for it and then do it with scales to practice more. Hopefully that helps. Also with this riff is definitely an exercise if I’m being honest. Definitely comes with lots of technique along with the palm muting as well.
@@Jaylamah529 Yeah thanks man I know he's right about the feel thing but that's honestly for all music, if you have no feel then it's not gonna sound any good... I've also been playing for a year aswell, been learning solos and such, I'm honestly not the best at alternate picking gonna learn this song tomorrow, but I'm just gonna try to get good with alternate picking on the low E string for now because I usually play heavy stuff haha!

1:55 Everybody gets that wrong. It's actually not two minor third shapes, but minor to major and back to minor. So the correct way would be 7th fret A string + 5th fret D string, then 5th fret A string + 4th fret D string and then back to the previous one. You can either put both the middle and ring fingers down on the A string and just lift the ring finger when you slide down, or you can use the ring finger for both notes on the A string and simply "shrink" the finger shape for the major third interval.
Surprisingly, the official GuitarTabs on this riff gets it right. Man, I don't know if you can hear the difference or just noticed it in how James plays it. Either way, I'm a long way off from that capability. Impressive.
@@kyucklebeans Actually I'm pretty sure you can hear the difference yourself. If you listen to the very first time the riff kicks in, without the drums, if you were to hum the "melody" along - you'll probably hum second interval different that the first, otherwise you'd notice you're kind of off key. That already tells you it can't be the same shape all three times.

This riff is a mind destroyer, I can get pretty much the entire thing fine, except for the fact tha the first part of the riff has seven palm mutes and the second only has six, It makes me go insane.

I think this maybe incorrect. Doesn't James go from the inverted power chord at 5 and 7 down to four on the D string and five on the A string? (Not six on the A string as you are playing it)
