It's sad to see all these boozers closed. Used to live off Old Kent Rd in the 1980s and went to the Green Man, where they had live bands. I saw Tony Blackburn doing a DJ set in the Dun Cow! Also the Thomas a Beckett, Frog & Nightgown etc. The whole pub culture has changed now and sadly it's gone for good
I used to drink on the borders of Southwark and Bermondsey and recognise a few of these as sometimes we would walk down the Old Kent Road and at other times down to Camberwell The Bear and down through Denmark Hill.
I wonder if anyone has a photograph of ‘The Beehive’ , on Goldsmith Road Peckham , before it was converted into a hostel for immigrants ? Lovely video by the way , lovely to see some of the black and white photos of Old Kent Road . 🧐🇬🇧🤔🤝❤️👍🏻🤓
brilliant i remember some of those pubs brings back memories especially the cliftonville arms ilderton road i lived there at that time opposite the pub when the victorian houses were still erected
Loved it but where was " The Red Cow" in Bermondsey and "The Crown and Anchor" and "Lord Wellington" and I am not really a drinker at all but used to see "Stan's Blues Band" now "Nine Below Zero" in " The Apples and Pears" in Rotherhithe. I moved out in 1983 to The Suburbs which have been fantastic but I still miss " Home" which was over East Street Market and I'm 66 now. Used to see " Blunderbuss/Laurie and Co" at the weekends at THe Thomas A Becket and Groups in THe Green Man close by:)
Think Bermondsey and Rotherhithe had more licenced premises than any other district in London. I was told this by pub licensing office of Tower Bridge nick in Tooley Street.
As of March 2021 of all the pubs featured here there are no more than 7 left!! They have either been knocked down or turned into flats!! Very sad that so many pubs i visited here in the 80s have gone. For example, Rotherhithe Street in SE16 now has one pub left ...The Blacksmiths Arms! In the 30s in this street there were no less than 26 pubs. Very sad.
Not mentioned here is the 'Valentine and Orson', 163, Long Lane. I worked there for a few months as a keyboard player in around 1985. It was a proper London pub, though very rough. Most people liked the old wartime singalongs but the Millwall supporters, - the Bushwhackers (..."No one likes us...") - smoked a lot of weed and liked to intimidate the musicians! I kind of...half enjoyed the gig... but I really regret the passing of the old London life.
Lord Wellington OKR and Apples and Pears Rotherhithe, where I saw Dennis Greaves of ( Stan's Blues Band ) now Nine Below Zero played the guitar with an extended lead in the Road outside :)
Didn't Lord Wellington become THe "Henry Cooper", my friend?. The resident Group I did see, regularly, were Laurie and Co a k a Blunderbuss at The Beckett. They played every weekend in the Late 1970's/Early 1980s. I wonder what became of them as they were around 30+ then.
Yes, mate. It's 3am in Bexley where I have lived since moving 10 miles from there on the 9th May,1983 and I still miss East Lane Market where I lived every day. Where are you now, please mate ?
I went to secondary school near the fort pub (Aylwin Girls school) totally forgot about it 🙁 maybe a good thing. On abbey street there was three pubs one after the other. You had the fleece (appeared in the film the krays) next door to silver sea Chinese, then the George which apparently my family had shares in 🙄 and then the white bear pub which I spent many a Sunday at enjoying the roast potato’s that would be put around the bar ☺️
Felix Johnson, I lived in Attilburgh hse on Abbey street late 90's to 2010. I spent many a wage packet in the white bear. Sometimes I wish I was back in Bermondsey, good memories
So many pubs gone just like it's people. There used to be over 50 pubs in Rotherhithe St alone. Now there is only 2,The Mayflower and The Blacksmiths arms. Even these have become gentrified, try and get a sunday lunch under a tenner!! Very sad that these pubs have closed and so many true locals have moved out.
I had a few pints in some of these, Alscot Arms played darts. Worked at Pierce and Rookes Paper Merchants pages walk. Lived in Trafalgar Ave Lord Nelson. OKR
missed a few, but still the claremont and marigold are there, and both are great locals, see you guys in there, we gor some great pubs in Bermondsey, go Millwall, se you at the Den
