I put Mountain Bike Tires on my Toyota Tacoma | Maxxis RAZR AT 811 Review

  • We replaced our trusty Tacoma with... another Tacoma! But the OEM Goodyear Wrangler Adventure with Kevlar were so bad we got stuck in a parking lot, which led to a deep dive into tire research that resulted in taking the chance on a tire company that is not all that well known in the United States.
    None of the products or services featured in this video was provided for free or at a discount. The tires were purchased at the same price anybody else would pay.

    thanks for being honest about your 80 percent driving unlike folks running to the grocery store on maxxis trepadors or bfg MTs. ive ran maxxis tires (bighorn MT) in the past as i was doing some wilder offroad trips at the time and enjoyed them quite a bit, other than balancing them. this last go around getting new tires i opted for the kumho road venture AT51 because the saved me more than 15 pounds per tire. also as its a little less aggresive and lighter its saving brakes and gas. had really good luck with them in mud, snow, and dusty gravel, as well as the pothole ridden asphalt on the journey to and from work.

    I’ve been running these tires since December of 2020 in Nebraska on a wk2 Overland. They’re louder than a ko2.The ko2is better on ice in my previous vehicle, an f150. But. Every vehicle is different on the weight and handling.
    Where I live we have some I’ve the most worst road issues like pot holes and shitty city contracted workmanship for roads. I have not seen any cuts or sidewall issues since they were mounted. These tires are not cheap, and to my comparison of a ko2, they’re on par
    To my knowledge I’m the first to use these tires in the US. Thanks to Ronny Dahl, an Australian maxxis user. Cheers to Ronny.

    I've been a little stuck on the old "wisdom" of buying E-rated light truck tires. I'm absolutely going to take a look at SL tires for my next set (and I should probably start using the more up to date terms for load).

    Some people (like me) live in an area where the rocks are extremely sharp and need a 10 ply tire to keep from getting rock breaks (rocks piercing through the tire in between the tread). I've never got a rock break with 10 ply tires so I never buy anything but 10 ply for this one reason.

      @@craigferris1364 Craig, I ended up with the Maxxis MT 772 on standard 16inch rims. So far about 7000km in and I'm really happy with them. Not sure where you are but most of that driving was outback South Australia and Flinders Ranges. Pretty rugged. Wearing well, no chipping and surprisingly good on bitumen, wet or dry. Expect and extra 10% in fuel use, even if swapping out for same oem size.

      I probably have about 25k miles on them now. I like them more than the Falken - not that the Falken is a bad tire by any stretch of the word - but the Maxxis is better in rain and snow, plus the lower weight is a huge benefit.

    Hi, I just brought home a Lunar Rock TRD Pro virtually identical to the one in your video. I'm highly intrigued with the Maxxis tires after watching your video. Did you go with the same size as stock (265/70/16)? I'm on the fence with whether or not I should bump up to 285/75/16, simply because they look so good. But I know this typically brings reduced mpg and slight loss in power with a Tacoma...then some people swear 285's rub on a Pro and some say they don't. My question is, what's your advice on going up to 285/75 with these specific tires? Thanks.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  3 года назад +4

      I think it depends on what you want out of the truck.
      I wanted something that still performed well on pavement, better in the snow and off road, and that looked a little bit more appropriate on a Pro.
      When you go to a 285, the tire is so much bigger, and so much heavier (the 285 only comes in an LT/E) that your truck will feel sluggish and slow on pavement. They might rub, the Pro wheels have more offset which makes tires more likely to rub than the TRD Off Road wheels. The extra weight will also cause additional wear on CV Joints, etc. But if you want something that looks really cool and you don't care about the performance hit, then 285s look great.
      I was super impressed with the Maxxis 265/70 SL because it seemed to split the difference between looking good, grip and the truck still being fun to drive.

    Not only does the door placard tell you the weight rating the vehicle needs, it also tells you what pressure the tyres should be inflated to for driving on road. Yeah, I'll happily drop down to 11psi for driving on the beach to a camping spot, but it's going right back to the recommended pressure when I'm coming back onto the road. In my experience, from multiple tyre places, they like to over-inflate and while the handling is snappier, the wear on the outside is more noticeable. Going back to manufacturer recommend PSI, the wear is much more even across the tyre.

    • @scod3908
      @scod3908 2 года назад +1

      That's backwards...? Over inflation usually wears the center of the tread, under inflation and other issues usually wear the outside

    • @mixispid
      @mixispid 2 года назад

      @@scod3908 Yeah, it is backwards. It's a heavy car and cornering eats the edges of the more square profiled tyres, in my experience.

    • @Icutmetal
      @Icutmetal Год назад

      I think you are confused- the door placard you're referencing is only valid for tires with stock size and load rating. In addition, over-inflation will wear the center faster than the outer edges...think about it.

      I thought it was worthwhile. I haven't seen these tires anywhere and I've been following the old letter-grade load ratings. For a long time you couldn't get a decently strong tire unless it was massively heavy and overrated for the vehicle. This is certainly going to affect my next tire choice. You are not the only person in the audience.
