I know this is a 3 year old video, but this was a very great story that you shared with us. I thank you. I grew up on a farm with no processed food and all we ate was what we could hunt, gather or grow. I moved away from home and began to eat processed foods. By age 25 I was morbidly obese. I ended up with IBS, fibromyalgia and was depressed and sick all the time. I would diet then falter so many times. Now I am back on the farm, my husband and I grow, gather and hunt as much as possible. I went off all meds and I feel amazing. I am back down to a healthy weight. No turning back now

Thanks for telling your story. I was raw vegan for 5 years, 3 of those years I was extremely sick, lethargic, Candida, always cold, super sensitive, teeth problems, major b12 deficiency even though i ate supplements. Ended up adding in starchy carbs rice/quinoa/potatoes/beans and 120g/day of chicken/beef and 1 egg a day on top of my raw vegan meals. Then every few days I make a fresh homemade pizza that keeps me grounded and the bread energizes me. I've ended up similar, if i crave it I eat it, salt, cacao etc. People please don't listen to GURUS! They dont know! Gurus have found something that works for them. All you have to do is find out what works for you.

I made a big change last June and lost 64 pounds in the last year. I went gluten free, I gave up Nightshade veggies and no more acid reflux issues. I can't eat beans either. I also haven't eaten out in a year, not even McDonalds. I don't miss that food. I had a bad junk food habit and gave it all up. I feel a ton better and haven't been sick once since January 2019

Our stories are so alike. My diet as a kid was sugar and processed foods. By the time I graduated high school I was in a size 22 pants. When I was 19 I went on a low fat diet thinking that was healthy, got down to 135 and felt sickly, I got hungry and gained all my weight back up to 275 lbs. In the last year I decided to cut out sugar, processed foods. Only eat when I am hungry. Eat good meats and vegetables. I grow a lot of my veggies in the summer. I am down to 193 lbs and feel the best mentally and physically. I turn 40 next May and determined to get to my goal weight of 149.

Wow. This video changed my life. I am fairly large now. Had an average diet growing up but was very athletic, so it was okay. Now my weight has gotten so out of control and I feel like shit. It feels good knowing I am not alone and that it is reversible with no gimmick diet, just eating naturally. I have recently changed my diet to mostly whole foods and fresh veggies when possible (I live in Alaska). I have lost 10 pounds so far right away. Thank you! You are beautiful!!!

Well today I am a healthy fit 72 year young female who weighs 62 pounds less, my blood pressure is normal with only 1/4 of the dose of medication which The only med I take now.. You are right food is medication. Loving your videos.

Your story is inspiring. The unprocessed, low-carb, high healthy fat diet is like magic. I'm in my late 60's and have no medical issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, imbalanced lipids, or arthritis. My eye doctor routinely asks about these because they affect your eye health. I'm like, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, non of that. He was amazed. I'd like to know about your healthy fats and where you learned about them. I only cook with unrefined coconut oil and then make sure my other fat intake is in a 50:50 ratio for Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats. By not have any fructose, and very low carbs otherwise, and no gluten, I understand that will keep your lipids in balance and make bad cholesterol numbers drop.

Oh my goodness! This sounds like my story in soooooo many ways! I have always loved veggies, but I was raised on trash. Very tasty meals, but tons of processed, sugar loaded, crap. I had major health issues, and so I also tried "vegetarian", vegan, raw, paleo/primal, then whole 30 (which was very helpful as it was an elimination diet). I think we all know we should eat mostly vegetables and fruits- real food. But whether your body tolerates dairy, or gluten, eggs, etc. Every body is different.
Glad you're doing so great. Cheers!

Finally! A sensible video on the subject of diet. I was expecting the usual "You must eat this way or you'll DIE!!!" rhetoric that is so prevalent on youtube. This is now my favorite video on the subject. My path to nutrition was very similar to yours. Grew up eating mainly processed foods, and very little fresh vegetables. Tried the vegetarian/vegan thing and it made me sick enough that I had to have surgery (soy and my lady bits do not agree!). Through elimination I have discovered that I can't eat grains and most legumes, peppers, raw onions, and most processed foods give me acid reflux. The closest diet trend to that is the ketogenic diet (low carb/high fat), so I tend to follow those groups for recipe ideas, but I don't stick to the hard and fast rules. It works well for me. Thank you for such a great video!

yes...great journey...something i learned lately..is home cooked dry beans..pinto, kidney, navy..gave me horrible gas..pain..but I did not feel that when eating beans that had been processed..pressure cooked..like in a mexican restaurant.they generally use canned beans..same for chili made by a resturant..then I finally started canning dry beans at home ( some people never learn it seems) for conveince (cause I do like chili) and realized that they did not give me gas.. NOW I JUST learned In some recent reading..the REASON. the pressure cooking destroyed the lectins..that for ME...HAD ALWAYS GIVEN ME PAIN AND GAS WITH BEANS..

We first started really thinking about food when our kids were toddlers and starting to eat a wide variety of foods. Changes in their behavior when they had certain foods was very apparent. I'll never forget how artificial food coloring changed them. One day my son had blue dye (as a toddler), and began banging his head on the floor after eating it. Both of my kids would get extremely emotional after ingesting FD&C dyes. We've pretty much banned it in our household ever since. We really try to limit processed foods, but haven't been doing as well the last 6 months due to post move, and parting with all my home canned food and just being so busy we've had to rely on some convienance foods, but we are ready to get back to our old ways. Thanks for sharing your journey with food. You're so down to earth-it's really refreshing.

Hi Jaime :) What a wonderful video. :) I was brought up on the grocery store diet and had so many gastro problems up to my mid-thirties because I was a city gal and continued that same way of eating. At one point, I was crawling on the floor in pain every day for hours and saw a gastroenterologist who told me I had "IBS" and that I just had to live with it. I decided to cure myself. I did a year long elimination diet and figured out what foods were making me ill. I gave up city life and am in transition towards homesteading and self-sufficiency. And, like you, I no longer have food restrictions (besides what I know makes me sick) and I eat much better. I'm 50 years old an look 30, I've never been more healthy. I've embraced my garden, home cooking and preserving. I'm vibrant and energetic. Really...great video and a wonderful message. I'm so glad you found what works for you!

Great video, For highly nutritional food (greens that you can grow in your yard), consider growing a bunch of "miracle trees" that can grow 15-feet in one year. That is the MORINGA PKM-1 Hybrid. That hybrid seed (available via E-bay) comes from India and will grow the 3 feet drumstick pods in one season - so that if you plant it by May 1st, you can harvest the leaves after 5 weeks and the pods before the frost/freeze comes in late November. It is a perennial and is a nitrogen-fixer and is drought tolerant. It handles over 300 diseases and when you eat it (or take the caps or put it in your smoothies), it creates a feeling of contentment. Hunger pangs disappear. If you grow too much, the goats and chickens will love it. You could replace a lot of your animal feed if you grew a ton of it. It loves full sun and it loves heat. Here in Phoenix, it handled 120 degrees F without any sign of wilting. If you prune it right, you could have harvestable hedges all around your well-lit property. It also stands up to wind really well (unlike corn - sorry about that).
Also, for eliminating high stress and sleeplessness, consider growing Ashwagandha. Heals adrenal fatigue and reduces cortisol and promotes a full night sleep.
To avoid gluten, consider substituting wheat flour with Chana (chickpea flour), which you can buy affordably in bulk from Indian grocery stores. I make a batch (usually 8) of banana raisin (or cranberry) waffles once a week and put them in one of those recycled Red Rope (licorice) containers and put that in the freezer. During the week, it's easy to reach in and break off sections and throw them into the toaster oven. That way, I not only avoid gluten, but I also avoid wheat and corn. It's based on the Wheat Belly Total Health suggested diet by Dr. Davidson. If you have a mill, you can buy dried chickpeas for $1/pound at the 99CentsOnly store and then grind them to make chickpea flour. I buy 4 pounds for $5.49 at Apnar's Indian Store in north Phoenix. Saves a lot of hassle and the product is great. It's amazing how many symptoms clear-up with wheat out of the diet. First one is skin - eczema disappears, pounds disappear. Metabolism improves. Pre-diabetes disappears. GI issues disappear. Unfortunately, I have to make my own pizzas, since even the Pizza Hut gluten-free pizza still has wheat.
Keep up the great inspirational and heartfelt videos. You are making a difference.

This one really struck a cord for me. Growing up and spending my whole life in the city I became so detached from what food actually is and where it comes from, you don’t see things grow and don’t see how animals are raised and 90% of my diet was processed and came in bright packets, Iv battled weight and health issues my whole life and spent 20 years on various diets and eating plans. Earlier this year we decided to move out of the city to a house with a small bit of land to start to learn how to be a bit self reliant and raise some of our own food, and our health and diet was one of the major catalysts for that. I’m struggling to overcome my awful processed food and sugar addiction but hopefully in the coming year I can work on that more. Awesome vid, it was really motivational for me to keep striving to find a more natural way to eat and learn how to listen to my body, thanks for sharing.

Agreed with everything said. I am 5’7” and was 145 lbs out of high school. A couple decades later I ballooned to a high of 204 lbs. In Jan of this year, 2022, Rachel and I cut processed everything, and a mass reduction of sugar, started walking 3-5 times a week and started making like pizza sauce, bbq sauce, bread, etc from scratch. The changes are ridiculous, as of today Mid March 2022, I am at 165 lbs and am feeling like I am back in my 20s, still have 10 more to go. We live on 15 acres and will be growing 70%+ of what we eat this year. Most people get it backwards. You don’t drop weight to get healthy, but if you get healthy, weight takes care of it self. Oh yea, Rachel dropped from 152 and is approaching 115, she is 5’2”. All are lifestyle changes and we can’t stand anything to sweet, taste buds do change. Anyone can do this!!

I totally agree! I got Sally Fallon's book, Nourishing Traditions, for Christmas, and I made what I found to be an easy transition to clean food. No artificial sweeteners, no processed white sugar, no weird "butter flavored spreadable food product," no carageenan, no additives or preservatives. Real butter, real sugar like honey and maple syrup, whole milk, homemade yogurt, bread, kombucha, salad dressing, no boxed stuff, just what I got out of the garden and clean food from the store. Acne, the bane of my existence since around age 10, was gone (including cystic body acne), my stamina increased, my chronic nerve pain decreased (when a 4 on the pain scale is what you call a fantastic day, even a 20% reduction seems miraculous and life-altering), my sleep was awesome, my depression and anxiety vanished, and even medication side effects seemed to reduce.
And sure enough, when I start to slip into old habits, I feel it so fast. A crash that can last days.
And you're right about the cravings, too. When I listen to my body and follow cravings with clean options, like clean chocolate or homemade frozen yogurt, I don't feel sluggish and like my eyelids are made of lead. Conventional ice cream brings it on fast, though, and it takes a few days back on the wagon to shake it, and fast food immediately kicks in that addiction-like craving. Just one paper-wrapped burrito and within hours I'm feeling pulled back to that drive through. It's weird how quickly those chemicals can effect the mind and body.
I'm a highly skeptical person, and I didn't believe this kind of stuff was real until early this year, but now I have absolutely no doubts. The difference has been astonishing.

Your conversation was very insightful because I've struggled with weight growing up and we mostly ate processed foods. I've had to deal with cancer and all the things my treatments caused like arthritis and overall stresses. When I've had the energy to cook from scratch I feel better from the feeling of satisfaction to feeling full and then mentally the process of cooking is meditative. I'm working on re teaching myself to eat better by cooking from scratch so that I can be healthy going forward. Thanks for the conversation it really made me feel good like I know someone with similar struggles.

Great video! I too am ‘intuitive eating’ now after having gone through multiple diets then finally cutting out everything processed. Now I’m going two years strong without getting sick, never see a doctor, and my skin and mood are loving it!
And for anyone reading this, the book “The Plant Paradox” covers almost exactly everything she talked about and helps walk you through an elimination process, no “diet” is pushed on you. Also educates you on all the disgusting and seemingly unethical CRAP that’s in our food.
Which is how I found this channel originally - to raise chickens. Because what they’re fed and how they’re handled commercially is disgusting .....and I love eggs 😊
Thank you for all the great videos!

+MrMyrta01 I must tell you about my father. At age 61 my father had his first heart attack, he was over weight and didn't exercise. His desk job and train ride to and from the city and no gyms (at that time in the UK) meant he was not very inclined to change his life. He retired at age 65, became very depressed, and had another heart attack at age 67. We all thought he wouldn't live much longer. After another heart attack in his 70's we thought for sure it was the end, but he stopped taking sugar in his tea, and made small changes, nothing drastic. He will be 94 this year and is still living in his own home, very independent, drives his own car, and even though his knees won't let him walk far he manages to do his own grocery shopping. It is not too late, he and all our family kept thinking each year was our last with him, but look how long he really had left, if he had know I am sure he wouldn't have been so depressed and would have made more changes sooner.

Jaime at Guildbrook Farm I have watched your video several times and it resonates with me. About 6 months ago I began an elimation diet due to some GI issues mostly but other symptoms as well. I spoke to my NP about my GI issues who suggested dairy may be a probelm. But since I really can't do anything half way, I subscribed to the AIP (autoimmune protocol) diet - mainly due to a Hashimoto diagnosis. Bought the book and had my youngest son (20 and the only one of four still at home) and husband on board. Thank goodness because I don't think I could have dont it otherwise. WIthin 4 weeks all of the GI symptoms disappeared, my nose didn't run every time I ate, I didn't need Nexium daily and sometimes twice daily, and my "red skin" went away. Fastforward a few months, Gluten, dairy and egg intolerance.... it makes eating difficult especially out but I feel so much better. Thankful I have the support of a wonderful family. And have since lost about 27 pounds.

This video was a lot of hope for me. Gluten and lots of meat make me feel ill. I was toying with the idea of Vegan but I've seen my step daughter do this process and she is very unhealthy. I've battled my weight all of my life and I'm struggling with arthritis now. I have a huge garden and can, as well. I think this refreshing video will, hopefully, give me the notion to listen to the needs of my body more. I hate pharma and I'm trying to get off my high blood pressure & A-fib meds through weight loss as well as manage my arthritis. I'm checking into Evening Primrose, etc for natural healers. In no way will I hold you to anything through my process; but your video is very refreshing. God Speed & Carry on!

What an amazing video. I'm kind of in that process of noticing foods that make me feel bad. One thing I am learning is that certain dairies make me feel like poop. I don't eat junk food anymore, cut down on alcohol and I noticed my depression has gotten better. I was on two anti depressants now I'm on none.I have become more productive, I'm going to start growing some veggies when it gets warmer, I'm making my own spices and seasonings and looking to start canning and getting into hunting again so I can have fresh venison. nom nom

This message was definitely for me! Great video! I too grew up hunting and on a processed diet! I had never been overweight though. I'd gained 75 pounds during my pregnancy, & didn't feel like it was going away, so when he was 4 months old I went vegan. I heard about the health benefits, started juicing, etc and this lasted 2 years. I always felt great juicing, and still do that now on occasion. Towards the end I too felt the same way. HUNGRY all the time, no matter what I ate or how much I smashed in, I was still hungry 40 min later. So one day we went to our favorite locally owned steakhouse and I had my moment like you did, haha. I ordered shrimp, country fried steak. Within 10-15 min I felt completely better! Food on my mind was shut off, and I vowed to never be pushed into something like that again. Because what first started out to be about health, soon turned into the "rules" vegans try to push. I don't want to fit into a box someone else has set for me. I had a lot of hair fall out, and my period was so watery it looked like red food coloring in water. I never realized it was the diet, I thought maybe it was stress since my mom at the time was in critical condition- that was really hard. Once I made the switch back, my period went back to normal the very next time. My hair is still growing back, and gets thicker more and more. I've learned my lesson!

2months ago I began a whole foods plant based diet for health reasons. Nothing against hunters, because the animals hunted live in their natural habitat. I do have an issue with the huge factory farms because the animals in close confinement are sick and abused. They heavily use antibiotics and hormones. If you can raise your own live stock do so. We used to have layer hens. Avoid processed foods and eat organic when possible.

You have me rolling! LOL. I can so relate to eating meat. I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic about 10 yrs ago, I was diabetic in my pregnancy and was on insulin so I knew the path. I took control! By Golly, I was not going on meds. I immediately cut carbs and meat.(why meat, I have no clue) I was "Vegan" without realizing I was vegan. I lost 10 lbs very fast, lbs I didnt have to lose.I was 115 at diagnosis( diabetes is very strong in my family) 105 lbs about 2 weeks later. I was starving all the time but my will to no meds fueled me. Until, one evening we went to a steak house. I ordered a steak- man oh mighty, that first bite brought life to me.I felt like super woman! I didnt realize how bad I felt until the first bite, I felt alive and strong! Over the years, I have switched with different ways of eating to control my blood sugar. WFPBLF- whole food, plant based , low fat- it definitely helped get my blood sugar in good range with eating alot of carbs BUT- again, I was HUNGRY! I said screw it- I am going to eat a very healthy , nutrient based diet, if my blood sugar goes to high, I know to adjust. We just ordered and received grass fed, humanely raised Buffalo.( wild idea buffalo, for those that may be interested. I have never had it but he has and says it is great. Thank you for sharing, You are so cute with a beautiful soul!

Regardless of the past, the person I see here is GORGEOUS in both body & soul! Its interesting Eastern Cultures see food as medicine. Outside of our diet, we also create other restrictive rules on ourselves. Some are of our own creation, some are the creation of others eg. society. When we start to question our personal rules, discarding those that do us harm, like getting rid of foods that make us feel bad... we start to feel better too!

I think that what you are saying is so great. You pick and choose what you need. I just want to add that you have more self control when you are not addicted to sugar. People feel like they can't trust themselves and could never stick to any sort of diet. Once you ween yourself off sugar you can have so much more self control over what you eat! It's so great! I pretty much do what you do. I choose half vegetarian and half fish, chicken and cheese diet. I eat what I want and don't worry about if it hurts me because I only crave things that are good for me and not processed etc.

    • @Guildbrookfarm

+Chelsie Rachal Correct. Cutting out sugar is a huge part of it. Overeating is generally from eating low-nutrient foods. The body isn't getting what it wants from that food and so you eat more (like the chocolate example).

Great video. I think you are absolutely right; listen to your body! I also think that different bodies do well on different foods. I have always felt really slow and crappy after eating meat. As a kid I wanted to be a vegetarian, not for PETA reasons, but just because I have never enjoyed eating meat. My parents though are both big foodies, my mom was a chef for 40 years, my dad's siblings own fancy restaurants etc. but none of them are vegetarian. I also had hunters in the family and had spans of years where elk and venison were on the table several times a week. My solution as a child was to simply not eat. When I became an adult I rarely bought meat for myself, only occasionally salmon or herring and unintentionally became a vegetarian for the most part. I only ate meat to be polite for years with the exception of corned beef for St. Patty's which I did truly enjoy. When I married a meat and potatoes chef I took up nibbling at meat again from politeness and cooked meat frequently for dinner. After we moved to an expensive city, and had two kids, we decided to become vegetarian for financial reasons. I was so delighted and really threw myself into it. We eat an incredibly varied entirely non processed vegetarian diet now and are closing on our homestead next week after which we will be able to source a good bit of our diet from our own land, hopefully getting to 90% self sufficiency in the next 5 years. Eat what makes you feel good, not what some pre prescribed "plan" lays out.

When I was pregnant with my oldest child, I went through a weird food craving phase. I loved oatmeal growing up and still do. But, in my 2nd trimester I ate oatmeal all the time. I don’t know if it’s still packaged this way but, I would go through a 5 lb bag of it every week! My husband went with me to doctor appointments when he could. But, he asked my doctor if it was healthy to eat oatmeal all the time. The doc said yeah, oatmeal is good for her and the baby. My husband said “You don’t understand. She eats a lot of oatmeal! That’s all she eats....as in that’s ALL she eats! Nothing else.” The doctor gave me this look like it can’t possibly be true! I told him “Well, I go through a 5 lb bag every week.” The doctor told us it won’t hurt you unless you don’t take prenatal vitamins and drink lots of water. At least I didn’t have to worry about being plugged up, which happened in my 3rd trimester. My baby was a healthy, 8lb 12oz loudmouth! Healthy but, loud!

On the opposite end of the diet spectrum I did Atkins a while back and ended up with horrible abdominal pains and constipation. When I added back a slice of whole grain bread and a serving of fruit those problems went away.
I went off of Atkins when I had a really stressful year. After 3 years of a stable weight of about 120 I rapidly gained back the 40 lbs I'd lost plus more.
I can't face that diet again so I'm just trying to eat more healthily but haven't done that great of a job of it yet. I haven't lost any weight yet because I need to give up sugar and white flour but it's been so hard to. Sugar is really addictive!

I so agree with this approach! Our family started an organic diet about 2 years ago and it has helped our health so much. The only time I really see us get sick is when we cheat and eat out. We won't eat fast food, but we live in an area where there are no organic restaurants. However, watching your video I realized that we could probably cut down on sugar intake as well as gluten, and I feel we can take our diet to the next level with that bit of information you have shared in this video. We are in the process of finding a homestead and beginning our self sustainable lifestyle as well, so it's nice to see visual aid on here and not a bunch of useless opinions. My dad was a hunter and i grew up on venison and sugar too! Hug drinks! omg! I was on allergy meds (Actifed) and had my tonsils out, developed asthma at age 10 and my immune system is still wrecked. I am allergic to wheat and dairy. Im off wheat and dairy and WAS soon to try to "quit" or "limit" meat. It's really not easy! I think everybody needs a different combination of foods and more of this or that at some times and less at other times. It's a dynamic way of nourishing ourselves. I couldn't agree more about listening to our bodies. Cheers! Imma go have a burger now. Haha! ✌😜
