    Watching you rant is like watching myself. We are both professionals. I retired @ 51 from US Navy with a very small retainer and returned to work for DOD so we could be debt free and pay off the mortgage. My work was also full of contracts and very political so I grabbed the retirement as soon as I had enough time with another small retainer but added together it will pay the utilities. To cut expenses, like you we can vegetables, bake bread, perform my own maintenance on vehicles and equipment, but to cut further I brew beer and ferment my own wine. I have beer the quality of Sam Adams and Napa Valley wine on the cheap. I'll watch more of your videos. Trying to find some land myself so i can raise chickens for eggs

    Your statements are what we call common sense. Lots of us had moved away from this way of thinking, buying into the false narrative of the world today thinking that reality had changed because of our technology and economic systems. Thank you for pointing out the common sense in a sensible and entertaining way.

    I know this is an older video but it happens to be the last one I rewatched so let me say this: you two are so eloquent and precise on what you say and how and why, that your homesteading channel is far superior to most of the other ones. This is not to bring those others down, but to emphasize the fact that your videos are so good and interesting that I keep coming back and rewatching them. I’m stuck in a city life for now, but following you provides a well needed break, and motivation. Thanks!!

    I think another way to survive the economy is the hidden places that one can NOT spend money. Jamie touched on it briefly in a video about paper towels and napkins. Making your own bread and yogurt, cooking from scratch, saving seeds from your vegetable garden, free ranging your chickens, and homeopathic remedies are all ways not only to prep, but also to survive the economy.

    Well said Jeremy. Globalization is taking over and has been growing exponentially for many years. Also the automation hits home with me. I work for a big corporate broadcast company and I manage a team of editors with production staff and we are automating so many jobs and at such a staggering rate that I can't help but notice we are eliminating many jobs. We downsize once every 6 months and the company uses that as a tactic to push the remaining employees. We have too much work and many automation tools so we are forced to put those workflows in place to achieve balance again. We use Flip Factory, Telestream Vantage and a few others which we are able to replace manual jobs with automated workflows. The last down size was 12 people from my office of 70 employees. Just 4 years ago we had 129 employees. I just keep thinking this is going to end for me also eventually so I need to accept the fact that 17 years as a great employee to a company means absolutely nothing to the powers that be. Interesting story you and Jamie have in transitioning from the corporate job to homesteading. I could be following sooner than later but I can say I have hated the corporate life for the last 5 years. It's become a job that I do not enjoy and I put in a lot of hours. But no matter what happens I am a firm believer in the term "everything happens for a reason". So time will tell what I do to regain my quality of life!

    I agree this economy is rough. The insurance is a disaster in it's own state. Jobs are hard to come by and the sad part is even if you go to school you have no guarantee of a job or career when you get out. The struggle is real and many Americans dont know what to do. Getting out of debt is the first and best advice once your debt free your free. The Borrower is a slave to the lender. I am on a journey of Self sufficiency and freedom. I have began my journey with watching your channel and the tips on why to become self sufficient. My main reason was the same as your reasons job loss natural disaster etc.. but i started a garden, raise chickens, working on learning to can. Then get my pantry started so to have food available at anytime.
    One thing I was always taught what's the live within your means and in general I did stray from that and it's been rough so this year 2019 is my reining back in and getting back to basics and living within my means of what I'm capable of money wise. I have met many people who live so outrageously past their means it's no wonder as they lay awake at night trying to figure out how they're gonna make the Mercedes payment how they're gonna pay for the mini mansion, Pay for their nails getting done hair getting done and pay for all the Macy's beauty products that they need along with paying for Every luxurious piece of clothing that they can get their hands on or the latest and greatest technologies there's nothing wrong with having technology not what I'm getting at but I know people who will sit there with an empty refrigerator or no gas in the tank but yet they all have the new latest and greatest iPhone or android but I can't even afford to go nowhere because the gas tanks on he and the refrigerators empty in general I feel that most people have become so materialistic that they forget that sometimes money can't buy everything for it does help to have money but when you look back and I've been in this situation where I've had a rude awakening this year to I've worked for a company almost 12 years and don't really have a lot show for I've sold my labor with no real enjoyment or successes in my life so as of 2019 I began my journey as I said above my goal is self sufficiency to where if I lose my job I don't have to worry I can go take that minimum wage job and still make a few wins me or I can do something better yet that I enjoyed.
    But you guys do a great job on your survivalist and prepper videos however you prefer to put it. You guys are amazing keep up the good work!

    Good consciousness here. I actually believe we have to go back to go forward. This adapt or die approach that globalization pushes is not making better human beings, or sustainable culture. I wish you both the best and thanks for sharing your insights. i selfishly hope your RUclips channel stays small. All the ones that grow end up making trade offs for viewers and playing that game and end up losing the soul force that makes any of this desirable at all to watch in the first place!

    Well done Jeremy! My wife and I are on the way to becoming debt free, this year we are only buying things that we absolutely need. All other money goes to debt reduction. As you said, we could also sell off a few assets that we don't use or need. Awesome rant!! Love your channel.

    Sounds a lot like when God set up the family - owe no man anything. My husband and I live debt free except for house payment..,, we could do away with that too if we sold things we have.. Main thing learn to pray and seek God desprately for what He requires of me. I came from the yuppy ways and love living the country ways now. People need to work and depend more on being independent and don't get sucked into the instant life. We live like our grandparents - store up food in case of a family crisis for about a year, pay our bills, and don't get sucked into every idea out there like spending all your money on things you won't even have a year from now and work as there is much to be said for good quality work. Love your channel thank you for sharing this love the insight. - Ruthie :)

    After the city of Detroit went into bankruptcy, they were able to screw over many of the city worker both currently employed and those who had already retired...I will never again prompt investing your own money into the company you work for...work related retirement plans are a scam. Build your own retirement outside of your company so they can't rip away what was rightfully yours...

    • @albanymountainhomestead
      @albanymountainhomestead 7 лет назад

      I speak of an annuity fund that was started by DDOT that my husband paid into for the 26yrs he worked there. And then they took back 1/4 of that fund with 6% interest. It is not the city workers fault that the CITY decided to do what theu did...
      If you work for a company for over 10 yrs and the pension plan you signed up for becomes null and void by the time you've invested 20+ yrs yet you've invested in that pension for 20+ yrs....kinda hard to start all over...you would want what due to you especially after investing 20+ yrs of your life to a company, and why do you think it isn't fair when other's want what's due to them. Just like public school tax...we all pay into it, even when we don't have kids...it's also not our fault that the mayor's (who's also paid by our tax money) of Detroit drove the city in the ground the way they did...I'm willing to bet that because you didn't get what was owed to you, you feel it ok that other's get the shaft too...

    Love how organized your thoughts are on this matter of concern
    The Land is even suffering with this non stop advances in Demand and Supply to foreign countries...The Water sources are changing with different chemicals and the Land Nutrients in the homestead land are showing changes with the plants dying and thinning each year....ahh heck, even the livestock and big game is suffering with this wave of growing population demand , for new homes, and more technology.
    Technology is changing every 6 months, and new skills with programs , competition is always the challenge. One of the main reasons, why people are going to Homesteading...
    Is it Natural pace, to be pressured like this in the workforce ? No wonder there are so many Mental, Physical health issues surfacing.
    The Health and Drug industry is booming with all the Sick workers.

    I agree man! This idea that first and foremost you should be DEBT-FREE is one the great things my family passed on to me. Everything I did I did on my own, only with short-term loans from family and friends and that served me well. I know a lot of people who have gone into debt to the bank for frivolous things like vacations and stupid gadgets and cars (that are worth almost nothing in a couple of years later) so now are deep into debt, depressed and not being able to sleep at night.

    I have been beating my brains out saying much the same for years now. I can't describe the elation and sorrow of hearing this coming from another. I became a welder 3G in SMAW and FCAW as the Marsalis Shale boom went splat (I can always add to my certs at just the cost of the test), certified manual machinist graduated just as oil took a nose dive ( it is picking back up) and became a certified phlebotomist (at least I paid that out-of-pocket) for all that I'm still an unarmed security guard. I've found that most of the better paying (still crap wage) companies in my area are either job mills and/or have preferential hiring of ex-cons in exchange for tax breaks, so I do odd jobs on the side.
    CDL-class A drivers and RN seem to be the only jobs in demand until CDL is fully automated too.
    Such is life in Appalachia.
    Rather raise bees, quail, rabbits, chickens, goats and sheep, permaculture orchards, vermiculture, bushcraft, brew mead (honey wine) and blacksmith. I'll get there, just not yet.
    Keep your chin up and your gun loaded. Defeat is only when you stop trying and accepting defeat is never an option.

    Truth man. The major problem here is an infinite money supply form US treasury. I am not an American but in eastern Europe it is the same shit in another hand. I become a contractor not because companies are hiring contractors from outside, but because taxes are significantly lower for them. End result - I become a freelancer after being ditched. Working more for the same or slightly more. Same as in US. Even if I get clients from the US, they are startups.
    Back to money supply, if it were finite, taxes not 70% but something more like 10-30% things would look in a different colors.

    For me I'll change my garden into an eatable one, cause I'm living on the edge of a city and I can't hold chickens so I will start on aquaponics soon to provide myself in protiens. So for my question: What is your take on that?

    here in april, the oil fields in north dakota may be hiring again. it may be something to look into. some companies may allow a rotation schedule, 6 weeks on 2 weeks off. its a lot of hours and dirty work but if u need a job that bad, u should look into it.

    Jeremy I couldn't agree more. I'm in Canada and you are in the USA. There is no difference, both countries have gone down the toilet. The rich get richer and poor get poorer. Only the rich have the money to run a campaign to get into some form of government. So guess what - 90% of the laws coming out will favour the rich. All corporations should not have Ltd or Corp after their names but should be entitled "Greed", The XYZ Telephone Greed Corp., Google Greed Corp., Wally Martin Greed Stores. I am sure you get the idea. But then you have to ask yourself who drove all that business to Japan or China or Viet Nam or India. We did because the prices end up a little cheaper and folk now a days are to lazy to make their own clothes as our grandmothers did. Do you realize that of all of the imported clothing 65% is made in Pakistan and India and the balance is from China. In the late 1990's they did a survey. They went to the employee parking lots of GM, Ford and Chrysler and what they found was that of the car workers themselves 75% of them were driving foreign cars and 80% of the foreign car drivers were driving Japanese cars. Makes me think.
    God Bless Joe

    Not a complete solution, but as a homesteader research vermicompost. All facets of it. I am about to either get canned or forced to retire and it along with entomophagy. It might not solve the problems of the world, but it sounds like it might be more in your lifestyles. Aquaponics, and hydroponics are other areas. Best wishes from a fellow homesteader.

    If things get bad, we need to arrange the removal of property taxes. Property taxes are what stole millions of acres of private land. It allowed crown zellenbach (the European toilet paper people) to purchase 1/3 of all of texas, alabama, mississippi, and louisiana for back taxes. . We need to also realize that if there needs to be a "reset" of the economy, ALL debt should be forgiven, not a partial system reset. If you live in it, you own it. If you drive it, you own it free and clear. We need a currency that has value. We need free or almost free electricity and health care.. Until then, we need a place to live that is OURS with very low or minimal taxes, enough to eat, a way to provide some sort of health care, and a system of friends and relatives along with some sort of self defense. Then, we need to rearrange our government so that it actually represents US!

    I think you are great on video. Yes, you have a different style but that doesn't make you any better or worse than Jaime. Your rant was right on, but I love it when you are building something. I've watched people building all my life but I'd get more out of your videos if you explained more of the details... How do you get the nails out of the pallets and how are they straight enough to use again? How do you break down a pallet without splitting the ends of the boards? I've tried straightening nails... Unsuccessfully. Show us tricks, or is the trick driving crooked nails?

    Do you recommend training in tech skills at this time?

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 лет назад +2

      +bigchunk1 - Absolutely. Javascript, Ruby, Rails, C#, PHP. Any of those are good tracks. Just don't expect to learn it and then go get rich because there are a million other people trying to do the same thing. Unfortunately it's all becoming commoditized but there are good gigs to be had and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. Just also have a backup plan.

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 лет назад +2

      +bigchunk1 - Also don't spend a bunch of money on going to a school for tech. It changes way too fast and the things schools teach are obsolete before you ever finish.

    Jeremy, You undersell your speaking abilities. I have been 'preaching' the very things you are saying in this video for years, and have never once came close to your articulation and well stated briefness in these ideas. Like some great writers, Hemingway, or Maclean, you do very well with the conservation of words. There is a shitload of information, all of which I'm in agreement with, in these seventeen minutes.
    Lol I once came here studying 'pasty butt' but ended up sticking around for a plethora of other wisdom and a philosophy so similar to my own. Cheers from out in the Wyoming Rockies, right between over the hill, and Galt's Gulch.
