I’m so excited, I changed my very first outlet, you walked me through all the steps!! Thanks so much. My husband seemed pleasantly surprised 😆
Happy I could help
Does anyone else already know how to do this but still watches these videos anyway?
I hope so
Safety reminders are less humiliating than screwing up.
Yes lol
I did. This is the third video I’ve watched and the first to not skip anything. Thanks! I have subscribed.
Same
You should loop the ground wire with the screw not against.
Low key, this is one of the best housewarming gifts you can give to a millennial homeowner.
lol fact
To any homeowner.
Low key, people who use "low key" aren't homeowners.
@@MrMattnis1 what are they then?
Never knew it was possible to convert an old outlet to support USB 1:1!!! Thank you for this video!!
I was curious about the wiring so I'm glad you explained that part. It will be a breeze now.
Happy to help
I'm new to this kind of thing and I live in an older home. Really appreciate the tutorial!
Glad it was helpful!
I appreciate your video, but I have to say 2 things...
#1 - There are 2 "Load" line terminals on every outlet. 1 is for the actual load that's coming in and the other sends the load out to the next plug that's piggy backed off it to the next outlet. You shouldn't put both wires on 1 line. Using a multimeter will easily help you determine which wire is the live "load" wire coming in. It will register on your meter. The one that doesn't register would then be the piggybacked line that would connect to the 2nd terminal.
#2 - The looped ground wire, you installed the wrong way. You should've had it facing the opposite way as from how you installed it. Always install it with the wire going in the way that you tighten the screw. That way, as you tightenen the screw up, it actually pulls the wire in and tightens the wire for a strong, safe and secure connection. The way you did yours actually pushes the wire out of the screw as you tighten it and it could one day come loose.
I am by no means criticizing you my friend. I just wanted you and others who may watch your video to know those things. God forbid something bad happens and wires come loose and short things out or maybe cause a fire. JS.
I have the same outlet, with 2 blacks and 2 whites, I understand that one of the blacks is hot but what do you pig tail the remainder black wire to? Thanks for your helpful information. I hope to hear from you.
Hello Maggie @maggiebrattoli383
I am by no means an electrician. I only know things about electricity from researching and doing things around my own homes over the years. 😁
That said, when you have 2 black and 2 white wires coming off the outlet like that, that's so that you can wire 1 of each to the power coming in to your new outlet, and the other 2 wires are used to connect to another plug to carry the power over to that one. 1 is called the "Load' side and the other the "Line" side. The "Line" carries the power over to the next outlet in line if you were in fact adding another outlet.
The 2 black wires are your "Hot' wires and they attach to the brass screw. The 2 white wires are the neutral wires and those attach to the silver screw. Then of course you wire the copper ground wires together and connect those to the greenish screw to ground your outlet.
If you don't have a 2nd receptacle to wire up to (meaning that you're not going to use the "Line" side wires), you take the 2 "Line" wires and simply connect those to the load wires.
So, you'd connect all the black wires together and screw them down tightly to the brass screw. Then connect all the white wires together and screw those all down to the silver screw. Then of course, you connect those copper ground wires to that greenish ground screw.
For extra good measure, call HD or Lowes, and ask someone in the electrical dept. They'll help you too. Obviously we want to be safe, and it never hurts to get another opinion and make 100% sure.
Anyway, hope thay helps you. GL and have a great weekend! 🙂
@getreal3336 - At the very least the person you responded too could have thanked you for your time and great explanation.
Nonetheless, I'll thank you Sir
@woodyhayes7402 No biggie, but thank you Woody. I appreciate you my friend and wish you and yours a wonderful Easter weekend. 😊
@@getreal3336 -Same to you
Just for added safety you should always do ground neutral hot in that order, not hot, neutral, ground. Always ground first.
Great advice i have no idea
Awesome, thanks for this. I went to go change my standard outlet with a usb outlet and found two sets of black and white wires like you had here. I was confused about how to handle the extra wires. After watching your video, I got them all installed easily. Thank you!
Happy i could help
You swapped it like a champ! Made it look easy. Thank you!
Anytime. It really is that easy. Thanks for watching
Thanks this was very helpful. It was a fight to get it in the wall, but after several attempts to bend the wires I got it in. Thanks again!
I was nervous, but your tutorial has helped me see it is not too complicated. I have installed light fixtures in the bathrooms, so the wiring should not be bad. Thank you for this quick and simple tutorial. I appreciate YOU.
So happy we could help
The first time I saw one of these in a house, I thought they were hard to setup. But not at all. Thank you for the video. WOW you don't see many too large holes like that much. Somebody did not know how to measure there.
Glad I could help!
you broke this down and explained each step perfectly. this will save me a lot of money

Hey man wasn’t as confusing of a video as you said you actually did a really good job
Appreciate that
Thank you. Doing mine this weekend. Hopefully will fit.
Very good directions. Watch entire video before starting will save you time.
Glad it was helpful!
Your video was perfect!!! It was very helpful and I was able to change my first outlet ever because of you. Thank you.

Excellent tutorial video; easy to understand and install + very convenient for USB artifacts.
Thanks bro…cheers from NYC 🗽

Waaay better than the even the manufacturers videos! Excellent work!
Explained Very Clear!..I’m going to Home Depot to try to install one myself.
👍👍
I’d honestly refrain from putting two connections on a single screw or even using the “unreliable” back holes. In a situation like this, I’d suggest pig-tailing.
Thank you so much for doing the tutorial. It was beautifully explained. You gave me confidence that I needed. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I'm about to put like 6 of these in our home for a selling upgrade! Thank you so much for your video...
Glad I could help!
Perfect instructions, like it was a custom lesson for my situation - nailed install first time! Thank you!

I liked the way how you reply everyone's comment and give them a heart 💓.
First time ever seen someone spending time and replying everyone's comment.
Or else others not even read comments.
Thanks for such wonderfull videos but why so less views?
again you are amazing for your support
@@614Lyfe 614Lyfe welcome dude i will watch all of your videos and will like each of them bro.
Wrap a piece of electrical tape over the connection screws to stop an accidental short with the box.
Thanks for the refresher. Keep up the great tutorials. 👍
Very helpful not confusing at all extremely easy thank you for the video

Thanks dude. Exactly what i needed.

Thanks for the help! This was driving me nuts. 5 wires, 3 screws! Hadn’t seen that before
Very helpful, thank you for sharing!

Great video for quick and to the point. Thank you.
Thanks
Thank you, very easy the way you explain.

THANKS for showing how to put 4 wires on 2 screws. Great directions and off I go.
Nice. Identical setup. Thanks for the video 👍
Hi, looks like you didn’t have to loop the stripped white / black wires before tightening the screws?
Im I the only one that learn this shht as a kid.. self tought by experimenting,,,went from changing door knobs to cracking open power outlets 😅.
Thank you for making this understandable for even this great grandma! Off to Home depot i go! Did i say thank yoy!
🙏🙏
Thank you for your tutorial

Good job, thank you!
Any time

This is great! To the point, step by step, and super easy. Feeling very confident in replacing my outlets now.

Nice!!!! I might get the one with usb x 2 and dedicated c type charger. Why some say 25 watt, some say 30 watt, and others say 36 watt? Does more watts mean faster charging?
Yeah just charges faster. Some bigger electronics might need higher watts to charge at all
Great instructions 👍🏽
Ty
Well done. Thank you

Great tutorial
Thanks
Very helpful instructions. Looks easier than I thought.
Exactly what I needed to know! Thank you!!!

Quite the shims you used to elevate the outlet to plate height...
Ty
Thank you for the tutorial I am install new one !

Make it look easy to do. Thanks
It’s literally that easy no joke
sure beats paying someone 150-200 to come and do that ... looks simple. Thank you
Great video, thanks!
Great post ty for explaining so well where did you get the outlets from?
We bought it at costco came in a two pack. Want to say it was 20 bucks
It appears that the orientation of the ground hook was going against the tightening of the screw as opposed to hooking in the direction that the screw is threaded.
Awesome vid Bro, went through several of these DIY. I liked yours, so didn’t understand how 4 wires “2black/2white” were going to fit into a 2 screw outlet. Also if you have any advice on what I came across I have 4 kitchen outlets that they put a granite backsplash over the outlets and I can’t screw anything in because the screws are to short and I can’t find any in Home Depot. Have any ideas on how to house the outlets?
I would have to see it
You get 3" 6-32 screws and a box extender from Arlington, literally called BE1 , or for a two gang box BE2 , and so forth, that should do it.
Although this was posted 11 months ago so I bet I'm too late
This video was very helpful.
Happy we could help
Going to give it a shot wish me luck
Good luck. You will be surprised how easy it is
Awesome thanks great job made it feel very easy and simple 🎉❤

Amazing ! Short and easy

Thank you
Thank you thank you thank you~!
No problem
Thank you sir
You are very welcome
did you connect the ground hook opposite of the screw? It's not incorrect, but the more correct way is to have your hook going the same way as you are tightening the screw. other than that thanks for the video
Thankfully now I know why all these products my kids are getting run on usb. Thank you
Glad to help
Thank you very informative.
Thanks for the video! This is something I can do

Can that be used as a phone jack? One of my bedrooms does not have a phone jack and I need a phone jack to plug my printer in that room.
Yes we charge our phones with them
STOP DO NOT DO THIS!!!!! 1st thing I'm not a certified electrician but I was a Firefighter/EMT for 20+ years. I've also rewired & restored my last 3 homes. For those watching. Do not put 2 wires into 1 outlet clamp like he did. 2 wires in the same clamp plate is dangerous & a code violation. You don't know if both have the same clamp pressure. If one is loose and comes out. A few things could happen. If lucky it trips the breaker in the load center (fuse box) Unlucky it energizes the box you could get a arc fault. Causing problems like. When you plug something in it may shock you a little or grab you & not let go. Or it could just burn your place and everything in it down. The correct way is for you to make a pigtail. Get another piece of wire same color about 6-8 inch strip off 3/4" both ends. Next get 2 wire nuts red would be best or to make it easy get two- 3 port wago connectors. Either way take the 2 black wires that where in the box strip insulation back 3/4" along with the new piece of wire get all 3 tips together and twist on wire nut . twist until it twists the wires together. pull firmly on each wire to make sure it's not loose. Then take other end of the new wire and connect it like he showed. Repeat on the white wires. On the outlets you have a copper colored screw & a silver colored screw. Copper is always your hot "Black wire" Silver is neutral "White wire" Remember I'm not a certified electrician but what he showed here is wrong and can KILL YOU... and that would suck....
Relax, Its not against code. you make good points but most gfci receptacles are configured this same way where you have two hots under the same terminal. Making two hooks under a single terminal screw would be a code violation and your method would be the preferred way of dealing with that.
Another point to make is many of these USB wall outlets are not made with good isolation of mains power to the secondary side of the circuit. This can result in your USB wire becoming live with 120 volts. Make sure what you install is a name brand product (Leviton)
Nice. Dyson Hairdryer
I know this is an old video but I would like to see a review comparing the max current output of the different in wall USB chargers. Doesn't make much sense to go through he trouble of installing one of these in the wall if it takes twice as long to charge your phone or if it does not supply enough current for you r baby camera.
It charges an ipad and iPhone
Nice tutorial, but I beleive there is also an option to use the screws directly instead of the quick connects.
Yes that is correct
Great video! I'm omw to Lowes!
Happy to help
Don’t blame the damn drywaller lol when you could’ve shimmed that out if needed
I was the drywaller lol 😂
I am attempting to install a very similar usb outlet but I have run into an outlet that has 3 black, 3 white and 1 ground. Can I insert 2 blacks under the clamp with the 3rd under the screw?
Yes you can
@@614Lyfe Thank you, you are a gentleman and a scholar.
@@jllerena488 lmao classic
If you took that old box out, you could use a new works to tighten up the hole and make the outlet solid.
It will also flush up the box, outlet and plate
Yeah i think thats what we will do. We should have done that first but we got lazy. Thabks for thr advice.
Good video bro
Thanks 🙏
Where did you purchase these usb outlets that came in a two pack?
We got them at costco
My USB port is 125V can I replace it with a 120V outlet ? Because the outlets in the house normally are 120 and this USB port is 125 with 15 amps. Can you still replace it?
This video was easy for me, because I’m a first time, all the other was too much for me 👍
happy we could help
Ok, bought the USB outlet, got all my tools! When I pulled tge old outlet there ars 3 black 3 white and ground. ???? How do I do it with 3 very old stiff wires-ugg
That I would have to ask an electrician
Same conclusion I reached. Thanks so much.
Just watching it to make sure, because there’s only 2 screws instead of 4. I see both wires go on one screw
I don't have a ground...is that okay? I just have 2 red wires (hot) and 2 white (neutral) i live in an old home and want to update my outlets
I would just hook it up like the one you are replacing. If you are adding a new one I would call an electrician.
Can't wait nee out on
How do you remove the face plate on the new unit?
It should just unsnap. Might have to use a small flathead to help pry it but be very careful.
Nice much better 😎
Thanks
how do i do this if i have an additional red wire connected to the hot side? I swaped mine out and did it EXACTLY like you but also added the red wire to the hot side (where it was before) and now it doesn't work.
Not sure
Can’t tell if you put the wires under the little metal plate or over.
Excellent tutorial, thank you!
You’re welcome
Easy way now is just buy a multiple outlet box with usb plugs that plugs into regular receptacle don't even need to remove cover
