  • My daughter could not get the key out of the ignition as it would not turn back to the ‘I’ position on her 2007 Volvo C70. This is typically related to the car not being in the proper ‘Park’ position. Removing the center console to clean and examine the condition of the gear shift assembly is actually quite a simple process. While there, I found that the gear shift blind had broken into two dozen pieces being hard and brittle. Two key items that could cause the problem
    - The gear shift knob ‘button’ is not properly releasing when putting the gear shift into park
    - The solenoid and mechanism is filled with debris causing the gear shift not to seat properly in park.
Then of course it could be the actual ignition gone bad or something wrong with the ignition cable…. not hard to replace, but more expensive.

Thank you so much for sharing this video. There are other how-to videos out there, but I found this video most helpful.
I just replaced the blind on my C30 today. In my car it was stuck In Park. Apparently the magnet that is part of the shifter blind is integral to the proper operation of the shift lock solenoid - without it, the solenoid will not energize. (probably a magnetic switch)

Thanks for this video, it was quite helpful.
When I did this on my 2008 C70 I was stumped at first as the console would not move back for me. Then I realized it had no place to go as there was no room due to the rear seat. So I had to remove the rear part of the console, where the drink holders are and that freed enough rook for the front part of the console to move. From that point on it was pretty easy.

there are always multiple ways to tackle a problem. In this case, the work needed to be done, but I actually had to replace the ignition switch which was fairly easy and it all works wonderfully (knock on wood). Hope your issue is easily solved.

If the ignition key will not turn back to the ‘O’ position, then try one other thing. Try jiggling/ holding the gear shift button while pushing the gear shift forward and turning your key at the same time. If no better result, then odds are it is your ignition cylinder at fault. Like my video, I had the same issue as you and My resolution was replacing the ignition cylinder as shown in the video…. Not a hard job
