I live just around the corner from where they lived when they lived in Nijmegen. When Eddie passed away i went over there and layed some flowers at the entrance/doorsteps of the apartment building (it's pretty small, one entrance leads to 6 apartments). When i got there, there was a single rose with a card and a couple of candles. I wrote a letter for the occupants of the apartment building explaining what was going on and if they would be so kind and not remove the flowers and all the other stuff. I put my emailadres in the letter and only one occupant replied me with a very nice email. This happend to be the occupants of the aparment the Van Halen family lived in. The apartments are mostly occupied by students these days due to the fact that Nijmegen has a large university (i'll get back to this later..). Over the next couple of days there were more flowers, candles, some signs and the (local) tv network (you have to understand that local tv means jack shit in The Netherlands..) came and did a piece. Some asshole was interviewed, made it all about himself and tried display his awesome Van Halen knowledge . It barely made the local newspaper. It made the news on national tv. But Ed died the same day that Johnny Nash died. Johnny Nash is was songwriter from the 60's and 70's and had a hit with "I Can See Clearly (now the rain has gone)" wich was a hit in Holland by some hack (Lee Towers) who covered it. 8 o'clock news.. Eddie van Halen died, Johnny Nash died.. 9 o'clock news.. Johnny Nash died.. 10 o'clock news.. Johnny Nash... You get the picture. That was basically it for ol' Ed in the Dutch media. A couple of years before he died someone started a petition and tried to get a street or a square named after him or the band here in Nijmegen, no dice.. I'll bet they are gonna try again and i'll bet they are gonna fail. You know why? The Netherlands doesn't give a shit about Edward Lodewijk van Halen nor the band. There are a handfull of fans and that's it. Van Halen (the band) has always been shunned for some reason. Within month all the stuff outside the apartment was gone, turns out that those students didn't give two shytes either. And let me remind you, this is not a very nice neighbourhood and it's always messy there so it's not like the flower and the signs was bringing down the property value. By now y'all realize that i'm kinda pissed.. Well, i am and i ain't dun yet.. At the end of each year there's a very popular music show called the "Top 2000 a-gogo" . Very popular as i said and mostly it's fun to watch. Almost every episode they have a live band that play major hit songs in a different style and the guests have to geuss the songs. In this perticulair episode they had some thrown together band with a well known Dutch guitarplayer called Leendert Haaksma and they had a guitarplayer called Lucas Hamming as a guest. Mr Haaksma is not a bad player but compaired to the great players he's mediocre at best. Mr Hamming on the other hand isn't even good enough to change Mr Haaksma strings and i'm being very nice here... Why am i telling you this? Well, they chose this episode to do a little segment about Eddie van Halen.. And as always it's Running With The Devil, Jump and Why Can't This Be Love as if that were the only 3 songs they wrote (And those are the only 3 songs you'll ever hear on the Dutch radio).. Yada yada yada, tapping.. Yada, yada, yada, the guitar technique he uses on Cathedral. That was it.. Mr Haaksma, reluctantly i might add, tried to show the technique used in Cathedral. He got it totally wrong and it's really not that hard. You turn up the amp with a fair amount gain, switch on your delay pedal, turn down the volume on the guitar, hammer on a note on the guitar with your left hand and turn the volume up with your right hand and Bob's your uncle. And when they asked Mr Hamming what he thought about Eddie two hand tapping technique he said the he thought it was tastless.. That really pissed me off.. In all fairness i don not have a problem with people not liking Eddie van Halen, his music, his playing nor the band. It's okay for people to not like something and to express that. But for the people who put together the tv-show.. Is it so hard to get a couple of guys in the studio who liked Eddie and had something nice to say about him? Adrian Vandenberg from Whitesnake is Dutch, he's a contemporary of Eddie, he likes Eddie playing, he knew Eddie personally and he lives in The Netherlands. Anyway, sorry for my rant but i really had to get this of my chest.. The Netherlands should be ashamed for the way they treated Eddie.. And truth be told, the way i feel now, if i ever meet Mr Hamming i'm gonna kick his boney little ass and make him cry.. Have a nice day! (Edit) The show that this segment was taken from was shown on a channel that nobody really watches and it suck too.
I went to Nijmegen to play 2 cover gigs in bars there in January 2019, really liked it. I went to the Van Halen family place, and tried to pay tribute to Eddie, did a video where I butchered Eruption and Ain't Talkin' about Love on my travel acoustic guitar, but at least I took the time to go there as a pilgrimage, I knew I wouldn't be goint to Nijmegen everyday, even though it's a lovely city... Until I found out a friend of mine lived there, so I actually might go back lol!

This is fantastic footage! Considering Eddie was just a kid when his family moved to the US his Dutch language had held up well. I dare say they spoke Dutch at home.
In Noel Monk's book he said sometimes when Ed, and Al would fight they would often yell at each other in Dutch, and no one knew what the hell they were saying, apparently they also had some REAL Knock 'em Down, Drag 'em Out Brawls, and people would have to physically break them up, because neither one would give up.

Dutch was their first language. When they came to the U.S. they didn't even know English. It was hard for them because they got bullied in school but they learned it very fast. While English does have a lot of loan words from French, it's a Germanic language so it's easier for Dutch / German speakers to learn it. What's interesting is the Van Halens are actually Dutch-Inodonesian. Many Dutch-Inodonesians left Holland in the early 60's for the US because of the very cold reception they received in Europe after being expelled from Indonesia following the revolution. Nothing like success to change people's minds about who is welcomed.
There also was a strong urge from the Dutch government and even queen Juliana that the Netherlands are overpopulated, they gave each person that went to live in the US, Canada, Australia, South Africa or New Zealand $1000 to make a new start. This is when they found out there were 10 million ppl in the NL. Currently there are about 20 million (incl. non registered).

RIP King Edward. You gave me the drive and love of playing the guitar. You are the best and will be forever missed. Love ya brother.
Cool to see them like this and to see the guitar that "young". For 1979 I'm amazed at the quality and how well it's held up. Looks like it was filmed last week.
Thanks to Dutch public broadcasting archive

I'm 100% Indonesian and I'm proud that they are 50% Indonesian 😁
Well, they didn't choose to be.
They are actually 'Indisch' which is not Indonesian.
@@SpaceCattttt No one chooses their genetics. They didn't choose to be Dutch. The Dutch were assholes to them when they were children for being of mixed race.
So cool. I've been to the Netherlands multiple times. I love the way Dutch sounds. Hearing Eddie and Alex speak in their native language is a real treat.
When Eddie pulled out his guitar and started tapping I about pissed myself!! RIP EVH
Mind blowing. I've been a VH fan for 40 years and have never heard them speak Dutch. This is like a time machine, thank you so much for posting this.
its so nice that they're not being interrupted by DLR and can answer their own questions these guys are genuine and pure talent !
Yeah, they shouldve fired that clown and talentless Dave before the first album. He contributed nothing to their sound. I bet he didnt even suggest they call the band Van Halen. 🙄
That goofy laugh of Eddie's is priceless. In any language both brothers are awesome. Missed. :(
@1:55 👏👏✊
Love watching them speak Dutch. Really cool.
He changed the way we play guitar forever. Bedankt. 🎸
Although they were so big in the USA, they always stayed humble and true to their Dutch-Indonesian roots. Love these guys❤❤❤ Rust zacht Eddie, we zullen je nooit vergeten
You can see how proud Alex is to be Eddie’s brother when he does that little tapping demonstration! Great piece of Rock n Roll history!
The Van Halens are legends. Everything about their life is just to the fullest. Great stories.
This is so incredible to see the brothers speaking fluent Dutch. Even more respect to them. Thank you for posting this video!
I'd hope they could, they were born and raised there.😉
I'm not sure if fluent is the word. They have very thick American accents and are sometimes searching their brain for the correct word 😂 It's awesome though.
@@ericdpeerik3928 as an observer, it seems to me that Alex is more fluent & Eddie has a little difficulty at times.
They both speak sophisticated Dutch, almost oldfashioned, it sounds beautiful! Love that Alex uses the word 'liedjes' (songs). Nobody uses that word in rock 'n roll, it's so cute.
@@Joylibelle I still use the word "liedje". To me, it's not old fashioned
This is who they really are. Amazing.
One of the things I loved about these 2 brothers on film was that they had such mutual respect for one another. I't was truly a symbiotic relationship. They had each others backs like one was the other.
Leuk man echt geweldig om te zien Alex zal hem nu wel verschrikkelijk missen zeg vreselijk als je jonge broertje eerder overlijd en je ziet dat ze echt heel hecht waren
It is always apparent from their interviews, even their very earliest ones, that while Eddie was obviously the star within the band, Alex was the absolute leader and driving force behind Van Halen.
Dave and Al took care of the business side back in the day. Both of them got the gigs and had great relationships with the club owners.
@@acepaul407 also, Alex was the one who decided art covers and tracklists and if I remember correctly from an interwiew with gary cherone he also cured concert setlists (but i might be wrong on this last one)
Active Dutch speaker here.. Alex is so damn fluent. Makes sense, as he was older when he came to America. Eddie has such a cool American accent in Dutch. But he speaks proudly, nonetheless. So awesome
Sorry.. meant to say “native Dutch speaker”. Not active

Wat een ontzettende sympathieke gasten. En heel erg puur.
I’ve always had such a high regard for those two, this interview just shows why, genuinely good guys right there in my book. Eddie’s smile will always be missed.
If you ever listened to Ed and Al speak English, it's easy to hear their Dutch just waiting to slide in.
This is what happens when you shoot on good film. It has (in a way) infinite resolution as long as it's stored properly. It's why nothing from the 90's looks good. It was all tape. Anyway, very cool to see these guys like this, near the humble beginnings
Man it is soooo weird hearing those famous well known voices speak Dutch! Weird in a cool way. Man, I miss Ed so much. Simply the greatest of all time. Great video! 👍
Having watched numerous foreign films from Sweden, Germany etc, it's great to hear the boys speak in their native language, the film held up very well, thanks for posting!

Eddie’s smile can literally light 💡 up a room ❤❤❤
They were my first concert in 1984 Phoenix AZ! I was 15.
COOL AS HELL ! AWESOME JOB putting this up on RUclips. Thank you so much. RIP Eddie 🤘
@@brisleeadams Maybe you should post this as a normal post and not as a reply to my post. It has literally nothing to with what i've written accept that you've mentioned Nijmegen..
Van Halen wasn’t popular in Europe in general-like Bon Jovi is for instance. It is especially heartbreaking to hear Van Halen isn’t widely appreciated in Holland.
@@gokhanersan8561 You're right. Europe, in general, didn't appreciate Van Halen neither. But it's a real shame that the country he was born in never took him seriously. Well, it's one of the many reasons I'm not very proud to be Dutch.

This is fantastic footage! Considering Eddie was just a kid when his family moved to the US his Dutch language had held up well. I dare say they spoke Dutch at home.
Gerardus 1970 They did speak Dutch at home, and when they were with their parents after they grew up & moved out.
Guitarist Adrian Vandenburg said he spoke Dutch with Ed and Al and that they would still use phrases that were in use when they were kids.
They were raised bilingual!

WTF amazing English is their second language all these years I didn't know
Rest in peace, Eddie. Gone but absolutely never forgotten. 🎸
Dutch was their first language. When they came to the U.S. they didn't even know English. It was hard for them because they got bullied in school but they learned it very fast. While English does have a lot of loan words from French, it's a Germanic language so it's easier for Dutch / German speakers to learn it. They were fluently bi-lingual and I'm sure learned Indonesian as well.
This is fricking priceless thanks for the upload
