    Another great video guys, always learn a bit about your art, I bought some old files from a garage sale and after a couple close ups of your panel files I realised what they are panel beater files, they are old and have a lot of rust on them but still in good order so I’m in the process of cleaning them up to use, the acetylene trick on the panel is another great tip that I will use going forward. Thanks again for another great episode.

    Fully appreciate the skills involved and the quality of work being done here, I’m not knocking the job being done but have a few thoughts. Most of these processes came about before we had modern products, equipment etc so back in the day this was the way to do it but it’s extremely labour intensive and you can get equal results with slightly different processes. The thickness of steel is being thinned even if it’s minute it’s the thickness is being reduced, this isn’t as bad an issue in older cars as the thickness of steel used back then was thicker but in modern cars you wouldn’t want to be making the steel much thinner in most cases as the cars dent easy enough. I also wonder what the finish job would be like if you didn’t go to that precise with the file finishing and gave the car of glaze instead, I doubt you would ever pick it up when the car is painted. I take my hat of to these guys as they are truly craftsmen and it’s great to see this kind of work is still being done and the skills aren’t lost yet

    • @rodparnell1953
      @rodparnell1953 6 месяцев назад +4

      That's the issue, you can't really tell unless you run a magnet over it. It's almost an "art for art's sake" unless you're gonna leave it bare / cleared etc.which is an amazing thing to see. Howard Astill openly acknowledges he doesn't have the skills to metal finish to this degree, so he gets his bodywork to within a millimeter and hits it with high fill. He's won so many top body work / paint awards it's ridiculous, and some of his build are still around looking amazing 20+ years later. Still hats off to the talents of these guys for amazing workmanship. Love their episodes.

      @CarnutrepairsPanelpaint-ts7wn 6 месяцев назад

      I watched his channel and to be honest he has no idea compare to these guys. I enjoy them both. It’s hard to compare these guys.
      These guys have got my respect for the trade. They are the real deal showing the trade in its correct form. In one way have to give it to Howard for trying. These guys showing all this knowledge for free is unreal for young guys.

    • @rodparnell1953
      @rodparnell1953 6 месяцев назад

      @@CarnutrepairsPanelpaint-ts7wn Well, it all depends what goals are being set.
      If the customer wants a file finished car, wants to be able to show photos of it in bare metal to his mates, and has the pockets to pay for it, then sure this is the way to go. Awesome. Love it.
      If the goal is to have a dead straight car, perfect gaps and deep mirror paint finish that lasts for decades, there is simply no need to metal finish, as the "no idea" Howard amply demonstrates.
      The reason metal finishing became somewhat of a lost art is solely because it became an unnecessary step in the paint process.

    • @adamsonautobody
      @adamsonautobody  6 месяцев назад +2

      We appreciate your comments.
      We have seen many jobs that have been done with body filler and in time the weather and eliments break down and that's why there is no warranty over body fillers with paint companies.
      Unfortunately this is why many guys are buffing there cars a year later.
      There are big differences between Top 10 cars that never see sun and street cars that are being driven and left in the sun.
      After many years in the trade we have seen the finish and long term results.
      This is why it was taught in our trade. Less is more.
      Over many years we have experimented on our own cars and panels with fillers on panels and left in the sun for over a year.
      The results did not let us down.
      We know what works for us.
      The body lines are sharper and the shape is true.
      We can get warranty on paint.
      We are not buffing cars a year later.
      We are not doing this for no reason. As we have said in our videos it's just the correct way that is taught in our trade.
      This works for us and we are not putting any negative feed back towards any one else in the industry . They all do a great job but this is just how we do it and we get unreal results.
      Thank you for watching ( Part 38 ) on the Torana build. We appreciate your time to comment.

      @@adamsonautobody I fully understand and am not having a crack at anything you are doing, I love seeing people do things the right way and admire the skills you have and attention to detail you put into everything. I guess my point is that somebody getting this involved with a restoration and putting that much money into it that this car won’t be subjected to the conditions you described and will be an occasional weekend cruiser when not being garaged so will having a very light skim coat of glaze over the car create problems? I come from a timber trade and still do most things the old school way because I’m fussy but sometimes I sit back and think I could have done a job in half the time with half the effort for pretty much the same result
