It’s so funny how people miss the point of high fashion. Would you expect these designers to do put banal street ware on the runway? What would be the purpose? Of course these garments aren’t to wear. They are to showcase the designers exquisite craft Manship and imagination. It is sculpture. It is living art for just a flash. And then the more utilitarian garments will be worked down from this collection For the every day use . I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for people just to enjoy the beauty and craftsmanship of this and other fine art. People are so intimidated by anything that’s outside of their reality and always trying to drag it down to common depths.This is why Ultimately our world is not filled with beauty and intelligence.

Scott Riddle i just dont understwnd how the designers get money from it,like i know alexander mcqueen wasn't doing crazy looks all the time but he did a lot of crazy stuff and got really rich,but if it isnt meant to wear,where is that money comming from

We can appreciate the craftsmanship, no one is denying it is a stunning work of art. But it says a lot about our times when designers of fashion and clothes make things no human being can wear. Quite the irony.

The garments in the showroom or the store are usually what the designers make money off of, which are scaled down and designed more practically. Do the cars at car shows look like the ones driven on the road? usually not. Most designers also make money off various other means such as licensed goods & accessories which often make for 95% of designer sales. Guo Pei worked In ready to wear business for 10 years before doing this. The runway give artistic designers their chance to showcase their talents.

Many people judge but they dont know what means haute couture.. It is non-functional fashion collection that serve to present brands and gives inspiration to the fashion industry.. Guo Pei takes a breath away.

You're probably thinking of avant-garde fashion. Guo Pei's work most definitely fits into the avant-garde category.
Haute couture refers to one-off fashion pieces hand made to the highest degree of quality specifically for a particular client. And to use that designation in France you have to be officially recognized by the French government, as it's strictly regulated for quality.

In truth, haute couture is when every man's eye follows another man's wife to and from the powder room. In fact, it is a collection of French regulations to control the creation and sale of clothing to insure certain levels of quality in their construction are rigorously maintained.

I always considered it like that. That haute couture was less for wearing and more a pure expression of the ART that can be made with fabric and textiles, etc. It's not meant to be worn everyday, not even meant to be worn really beyond that show. And the models are purely there for display purposes, like a pretty pedestal displaying a sculpture in a museum.
It's not supposed to be practical. It's supposed to be beautiful and inspiring and a creative way to show people what can be done with those materials.
And I mean, come on, no can can look at this and say it's not absolutely gorgeous, amazing, brilliant art

Haute Couture shows are only for publicity and furthering the fashion house's brand. The dresses created not for sale usually and are only created for the show alone. A lot of the comments on here seem unaware.

I saw her Haute Couture exhibition at the San Francisco Legion of Honor Museum in San Francisco, CA. I saw the show 4 times. This is a once in a lifetime type of exhibition that takes you to wonderful global spaces and into the artist's mind after looking at the all of the one of a kind art pieces that she and her staff designed. The textiles alone are exceptional and then to make them into show piece style artist and the ZEITGEIST level of the art garments was an immersive experience. I will never forget this designer.

Haute couture is a much-misused phrase that actually has very specific rules for qualification. Translated literally, couture is French for dressmaking, while haute means high. These are garments created as one off pieces for a specific client. 19th century Englishman Charles Frederick Worth is considered as the father of Haute Couture and today members are selected by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. To qualify as an official Haute Couture house, members must design made-to-order clothes for private clients, with more than one fitting, using an atelier (workshop) that employs at least fifteen fulltime staff. They must also have twenty fulltime technical workers in one of their workshops. Finally, Haute Couture houses must present a collection of no less than 50 original designs - both day and evening garments - to the public every season, in January and July.
