I was a teenager in the 90s, and i feel so fortunate, to have witnessed that era ; Galliano, Gaultier and McQueen, they delivered magic and virtuosity at its higuest level, it was truly epic. I can honestly say i havent seen something like it after that era.
I think John being extremely vulnerable and honest about what he had done in the past demands respect. It takes a lot for someone to openly talk about how wrong and unstable they were. I only wish him well.
Love him. His body of work is already phenomenal. His Central Saint Martins graduate collection was shown in the window of the legendary Brown’s boutique on London’s South Molton Street in the 1980’s. He had his own eponymous line, he was creative director at Dior and now he has reinvented himself again at the helm of Maison Margiela. His detractors said he was a showman and that his collections were overtly theatrical, but his aesthetic has evolved and he has proven that there is far more to his wheelhouse than diaphanous bias-cut dresses and fairytale couture gowns. One thing that hasn’t changed is his talent. Few designers today can sketch, drape, cut and construct - but Galliano is truly artisanal in his approach. He’s a master craftsman and a visionary.
... but he's a survivor and didn't take the most obvious route out of all the trials. He deserves the credit for sticking it out, no matter how bitter. Now that's greatness
I like design but don’t get particularly excited about fashion or designers, but John Galliano is undeniably an amazing talent, the best. I don’t know he does it, and for so many years. Huge respect!
I can't wait to see this!! Life isn't black and white, John is undoubtedly one of the best fashion designers in history, however to produce his level of work and always to an exact timeline is a tremendous pressure. No wonder there are times when he crashed and burnt. However, he's picked himself up in the most spectacular way and I'd say the Margelia '24 show is the best John has ever done, he goes from strength to strength.
HIGH & LOW - JOHN GALLIANO is arriving in cinemas from this March in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, Mexico, Chile, Brazil and more. Streaming soon in India and Turkey.
Even though he's a fashion genious without any parallels, he's human after all and its good for him to have this kind of documented "redemption" related to his lowest moments. And besides all that, he one-of-a-kind and he'll always be!
He made a mistake and he paid for it dearly , but! Now he is better mentally and better than ever . It was probably the best thing that happened to him in order to get him sober and off drugs. I am glad that he is back !
Look forward to this. I believe in second chances. If someone has apologised, recognised their past bad behaviour and taken steps to be a better person, then why shouldn’t they carry on with their careers?
If Galliano hadn't fallen from Grace the way he did, maybe History would have looked upon him as the great and spectacular designer that without any doubt he is but becoming his life a Greek Tragedy History put him on the pedestal of the mythos. So maybe every cloud has a silver line it's truth after all. I will be seeing this documentary tomorrow 🌟
John Galliano remains to be one of the few, true fashion geniuses in history. Had he stayed on in Dior mediocrity would not have crept into the realm of couture. Haute couture is nothing more than ridiculouslu-priced Zara et al nowadays.
He always been and always be an inspiration to me. The kind of magic he brings to fashion is simply unmatched, and so very few, some still around but most are gone, could be called his equals. To me, he's fall from grace was overblown, specially his exit at Dior. It didn't seem as a punishment but an out for someone who was getting to powerful and to expensive for the house. Don't get me wrong, I was shocked and disgusted with what he said, but after it, you could tell it was another drunk, goated yo the max. Not an excuse, but something that I interpreted that way. It's sad they kick him out, Dior and Galliano were magic made in fashion heaven, but I'm glad he got the last laugh after seeing the last Margiela collection, another of his collection that will go down in fashion history, a legend only he could create. Can't wait to watch this.
HIGH & LOW - JOHN GALLIANO is now streaming exclusively on MUBI in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, India, Turkey, Latin America & more.
It’s interesting that designers that openly condone and support Israle isn’t terminated immediately…but 1 comment ended John’s career at Dior. The hypocrisy, just saying 🤷
That old dude from lvmh want him to apologise to the company is really dumb.. he said those thing while drunk to that one person, that doesnt mean he hate all jews.. and he already apologise to that person
Regardless of his talent and what his fanboys and girls would like us to believe, Galliano doesn't come out of this fiasco smelling of roses. While it's obvious he's not a nasty person per se , he comes across as not the sharpest tool in the box, somewhat vague, so wrapped up in himself that he's unaware and careless about the whole episode. As if being drunk somehow absolves him from showing concern. Once you get your logic in order, you understand that being a great designer doesn't mean you're a great human being. Really it's not Galliano that's that most boring or guilty in all this it's the adoring fashion crowd who fawns at everything he does as if he was the second coming. They're twice as vile as his antisemitic rants were.
I love how he's having his renaissance. He paid a much much higher price than he should have for being drunk and saying something he shouldn't have....as do we all.
Come now. I admire Galliano's work as much as the next person, but people don't say antisemitic things because of pressure or alcohol. They say antisemitic things because they want to say them, or worse yet because they believe them & want to say them. People are certainly prepared to forgive. But let's not make excuses for hateful behaviour & words.
@@martsky-em6oh He's an artist, so you're welcome to say it's 'just' art, but to me art & design are essential human work. The unearned & over-the-top accolades in the comments are because fashion is currently a wasteland--& not in a good way, lol. Major designers are afraid to introduce anything new, so even haute couture is a steady unadventurous diet of re-working, copying, sameness. Boring af. The only real exceptions are Miuccia Prada & Galliano.

Actions speak louder than words! His aesthetic of the morbid, sensual and dreamy in no way corresponds to the ideas of the fascists, with their worship of functionalism and physical strength. In no way can one claim that Galliano lived a life consistent with the ideals of this evil Hitler. On the contrary, one can say that Galliano would have been one of the first victims of fascism in Hitler's time. He most likely wouldn't have survived. At best, he would have been banned from working, like many "controversial" artists in the Third Reich.
I just watched this documentary in full and it confirmed for me how awful the fashion crowd are. I bet they would forgive a serial killer if he was a talented designer, but I also suspect they hold the same bigoted opinions as the ones he voiced when he was at the bar. The whole lot of them are irredeemable.
