For years..Every like 6 months I return to this video. I fucking love Michael keene.
Brian Serotta Cheers!
So how y’all know each other
@@isaiahgrandt5305 It looks like they do
those chords in sons of belial are so SICK man, beautiful
This dude is a godly composer
best three finger guitarist I have ever heard!
Those chords at 4:00 like explain my existence ahahah, man so layered and flavorful. I can't stand people that discredit metal. These guys are technical and soul gods.
Dudes a god damn genius.
minor triads + accidentals + dissonance = satan
hahahahahaha
What does he mean by accidentals?
+Fonzo Hernandez
Chromatic notes
+ slightly out of tune I guess...? What the hell was that
not sure how to explain, he clearly demonstrates the concept at 1:18
I really wish he would do more of these videos. I’d love to see his genius in action. Such a ridiculous player and writer.
Michael is an extremely gifted musician. I have a healthy jealousy his finely-honed skills. He's a damn good looking dude, too.
it seems to me that you like weinkeys. McPeppy, check out 'BTBAM Best solos' for a taste of the glory! See what it tastes like!
Last part was weird AF but okay
📸
yeah he's gorgeous, no homo tho.
@@SkateSmokeAndDrumbit of light homophobia?
I´ve always loved his harmonic progressions and linear soloing. So this video is a huge delight for me. The Faceless are the non cheesy version of Dream Theater. Especially if you take Autotheism.
2:54 he went full Nick Cage right there.
HAHAHAHAH I NEVER THOUGHT ABUOT IT THAT WAY but damnnnnnn u rite u rite tho
That’s oddly accurate
The way he makes chords has had such an impact on the way I make my walking bass lines. I play prog rock/electronic rock stuff. THANK YOU MICHEAL KEENE
the sons of belial ending solo is the most beautiful thing the faceless has ever written
That tone is so sick.
True!
I feel Michael Keane sometimes gets forgotten, and when u have albums like Planetary that almost defined a small era of music in the 00's, I feel the man (and band) deserve so much more fkin credit. Love live Keene and The Faceless!!
He also produced some of the best metal albums out of the mid 2000's. Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, Suicide Silence, Abigail Williams, Fleshgod Apocalypse, The Zenith Passage, etc..
hes not forgotten, planetary is still very much a part of the discussion in tech death & people watch his old videos daily . but its usually videos from 10+ yrs ago before all the member changes and before keene went down a dark pathj. and it fucking sucks, im sort of in denial about the fact that this younger healthy version of him is long gone. he did so much for the genre and for so many guitarists.
@@maxwellholmes594 Yeah man, its crazy what drugs can do. Wonder how he is doing now.
i Love listening to guitarists talk about music cuz we all have our own names for things so depending on the musician you talking with/listening to depends on the vocabulary you gotta know.
Watching this many times throughout the years, finally grabbed my guitar and tuned to drop C. Those chords are so much harder to play clean than he makes it look, gives me a deeper respect for his skills.
i don't use my pinky either. i also don't play guitar
Lmao!!
God that lineup, man.... this is still my biggest inspiration and you can hear it in the way I play. I fucking miss the faceless, this and akeldama faceless
Akeldama is my favorite, but all their albums have good songs. Instrumental illness is so fucking good
@@rockyevans1584 Akeldama is such a fine pick for a favorite, that album brought out (in my opinion) their most technical and groovy side of them
@mcdonaldsicecreammachine8917 before he started singing like trey Parker too lol. Man can get away with anything because his riffage is just superb
Michael Keene is the proof that you don't need more than 6 strings to be fucking heavy
+Thrashmetalkicksass Opeth is the proof that you don't need to down tune to be heavy
+Thrashmetalkicksass Sylosis is keeping it heavy too, in standard tuning ;)
+Thrashmetalkicksass lamb of god is proof you don't down tuning or more than 6 strings to be heavy
yeah but 10 string is heavier
+Jerrylee Stewart-Gonzalez Lamb of God uses drop D tuning.
He'd rather tap than just USE HIS DAMN PINKY
he needs to tap for the second sweep anyway so why shouldn't he already place his hand like that before?
Hope you get over yr addiction.
Yr absolutely an amazing composer and artist. And one helluva guitar player. Yr last record was beyond amazing.
I'm ready for the sequel.
Snap out of it dude.
Equivs to prayers on yr recovery...for real.
@George James is it so hard to stfu?
Oh wait I mean
"shut the fuck up"..?
There see? I even spelled it out for ya fucknut...
that's a beautiful finish on that guitar
Michael Keene is unbelievable
dudes a fucking beast.
That ain't no fucking joke.
Zachary Branham u speak the truth. he is a true master of the class.
jubzz insaine That he is. I also feel he is terribly underrated.
Zachary Branham Eh I wouldn't say that. The Faceless are very big in the metal scene and Michale Keene is a widely known name.
That opening riff from the Ancient Covenant is so dope!
This dude was nice enough to actually sign my Ibanez... stil haven't fully recovered from how much my jaw dropped lol
One of my favorite metal guitarists.
Amazing.
The point he makes at 3:51... awesome. I may need to try some drop tuning. Started looking into this guy as a curiosity and now I'm learning some cool things from him!
ha 10 years later and I'm thinking the same, never heard anyone say that about playing in drop tuning. usually it's just about the chugs, but he's talking about chord extensions. interesting.
Michael Keene and AJ Minette are so under rated :(
Kinda suck AJ went a different route. Dude said he got bored playing metal. I was wtf seriously!!! 🤦🤣🤣
Me, nodding along, pretending I understand: "Ah yes, accidentally triad minor, yes, yes of course"
one of my favorite bands
LOVE THAT TEE!!! WAY TO GO SIR MICHAEL KEENE!!
Oh so NOW you send me these RUclips 😤😤😤
Where TF were you 6 years ago!!!
Same
Pretty sure that tapping run is from Autotheist Movement III no?
love his tone
"and that is.. the riff :3" hahahahah
Very nice BRJ
Hey guys, there's a link to tabs of all examples in the description!
nope, you liar
digging the NIN shirt, great video!
If my shitty explaining will help you in any way, basically an accidental is a note that doesn't really belong in a scale or mode. For example a C Maj scale is CDEFGABC, so if you play C-C#-D-D#-E-F, the C# and D# would be accidentals since you don't see them in a C Maj scale.
Triads are the basic fundamental notes of a chord/arpeggio. An A Maj chord is made of the notes AC#E. Play those 3 notes in succession and you're playing an A Maj triad. Hope that helped a bit.
The song of the intro is Planetary Duality I
The 1:32 sweeps weren't maj 7 right? That sounds minor like the 2 first chords
this man knows his theory
his voice is makes me feel like I'm taking guitar lessons from lumpy space princess... Great lesson, he is such a talented music composer.
Planetary Duality I (Hideous Revelation) but that is just the intro for Planetary Duality II (A Prophecies Fruition). Hope it helps.
I always liked him
Im so keened out
Do you think the majority of metal guys know theory? And those people who gave 30 thumbs up on the comment that a Minor maj7 chord is fancy?Anyone who knows the bare minimum theory knows that shit. All the basic chords minor, major and dominant with all the extensions.Knowing them is easy.Using them to sound good is another story. And Keene uses them very well.
+Daniel K. A spy chord is minor chord with a major 7. Austin Powers. Also a C-shape major7 chord with a #5 sounds pretty james bond.
its his custom Bernie Rico Jr guitar. He also uses a green Washburn wm526.
I wasn't aware of the title cuz I clicked on the link and switched tabs real quick, so when the video started I thought I heard "this is my cocaine and your watching guitar messenger" lol
I dont wanna be a dick but this is one of the first riffs I learned I'm not kidding
Watching this in 2020... in 1080p! Did you guys had cinema cameras back then? Most videos from 2012 are crusty potato quality.
its a single note, which is called a root, (since the chord is built upon starting with that note).. with an added flat 3rd, and a 5th.
Love those chords. Piggy would surely approve.
go listen to their music and you tell us but i am gonna go out on a limb and say he is a beast by far 1 of my favorite guitarist's
thank you!!!
I’ll not even learn it but I like to watch every detail
Man i remember seeing these guys in toronto back 2009 with veil of maya, they were fuckin savage and blew us away even for a small crowd of 100
Love the minor-major 7th chord use
no one commented on the bernie rico jr, hes not using the washburn
💙👍👌👴❤💙💚💗💖for Face less!!!!!
That Bernie Rico Jr. guitar finish is ballin
Tapping riff at 5:00 is the solo tapping section in the song Deconsecrate xD
Bernie Jr guitars are all sick as hell i hope i can afford one some day, a man can dream right?
Yeah I just recently started using a metronome and I didn't realize how much it helped. :D
Yeah he's really great and he's one of the biggest inspirations for my playing but he has a serious problem with his pinky. He should be using it instead of having it there like a dead finger.
*****
LOL WHY DO I SEE YOU ON EVERY GUITAR VIDEO.
Alberto Lawant to each his own man...theres just too much shit you cant reach without your pinky
He's talked about it before, but basically he can't because of the nerves or some shit.
Well he uses it when he’s playing chords so...
because trust me dude
Finally!
Glad somebody else noticed!
excelente! muy bueno para estudiar los temas :3!
I've watched this video a lot
So who knows of a video showing how to make the sound at 0:46 to 0:47 because I would really love to implement that into one of my solos. I know that Born Of Osiris uses this too. I know most of you are going to say "just listen to him and do the tapping" but it's not a clear description to make the "bird chirp" sound as I like to call it when Born Of Osiris uses it because that is what it sounds like. But if anyone could link me to a video describing how to make the "bird chirp"/dissonance sound that would be great!!
Just hit two notes at the same time that are one semitone off from each other. If you use higher notes it will probably get more of the "bird chirp" sound you described.
Funk Master How many frets or strings or both would i have to use to produce the sound??
Nicholas grin you can do it using just two strings. One way to play it is hit the 19th fret on your b string and 15 on you high e at the same. if you stop the notes quick and don't let them ring out it will probably get more of a chirp sound. Thats one to play it. you can try experimenting with different strings or notes.
It's so sad as he seems like such a nice and talented musician but the drugs are a massive barrier for him... hopefully he manages to get away from that shit
Post Mortem what drugs?
@@OversikerSTUDIO he had a heroin addiction
@@postmortem8767 it wasn’t heroin
@@Randinator wtf it was heroin lmfao, and lots of it
@@confucamus3536 If you bothered to do any research, you’d see that Michael Keene himself has admitted that it was painkillers, not heroin. Admission to drug use doesn’t put him in a good light, there’s no good reason for him to lie about using one drug over another. You obviously make assumptions in life without any due diligence.
i think i read that he has always had an issue with the muscles in his left hand that makes playing with his pinky too difficult to bother with so he almost always plays with 3 fingerz
I’m literally sitting with MICHAEL right now and we are laughing at your post. Only time he has problems with the muscles in his left hand is when his fiancée Lindsey is mad at him and he hast to jerk off.
@@Surfvolcom77 can you ask him where i can score some black tar
giveaway I’m the dealer.
thenaks for the swift replly !
Anyone here still have that tab? Seems you can't get it anymore.
What exactly is the spy chord? It does sound like something out of a spy flick
It's a minMaj7 chord (1 b3 5 7). The chord created from the Melodic Minor scale.
or the Harmonic minor scale :)
Oh snap, that's a very rarely-used chord in most music. Sick, thanks!
Sure, and you're right. It doesn't get a lot of play time. Probably most heard in jazz, but still not often. Cool sound for zombie film scores too.
OH SHIT! THE KEENE MACHINE STRIKES AGAIN!
@alex villa it's planetary duality part 1
does anyone knows what song its on the intro at 0:10 ?
1:27 Sounds like Lifted's solo by suicide silence
Yeah and suicide silence uses guitars too...oh shit and bass guitar and a drum kit!
the whole band is a rip off!!!
Genius.
I'm new to The Faceless so forgive me when I ask, what's the song playing in the intro?
Planetary Duality I (Hideous Revelation)
Thanks buddy
In the intro section? Planetary Duality I.
Similarities DT/Faceless: Refined use of melodic patterns/motifs and their development and counterpoint function.Emphasis on harmonical aspect (chord changes and voicings thoroughly designed).Elaborated guitar soloing.Eclectic musical concept.Epic character of whole record...... Dissimilarities:No hypervirtuostic unisons and extended instrumental sections in The Faceless. No cheese vocals in The Faceless. No straight major/minor tonality in The Faceless. No demonic implications in DT....
Like the NIN shirt.
Good...!!
Chuck doesn't use his pinky much up on the higher frets, which is actually pretty normal. Keene just doesn't use it often for anything.
Thumbs up just for that amazing profile picture
Thx. Well, nowadays it's no problem to get guitars anyways, even if your country does not have those , you can just go to the big guitar shop: for example in Canada it is, Tom Lee and L&M and they will order whatever guitar you want from USA, and you just gotta wait, and pay a bit extra.
the tapping technique is from michael romeo
Is it possible to share this patch?
i actually like the intro song for guitar messenger whats the song called?
it can also be looked at as a g major 7. both are correct
thnx!
I'm fairly certain I read it in an interview. The memory is a little fuzzy, but I'm pretty sure he said it himself.
He seems like a real nice dude
his tone is probably the cleanest in death metal. how he do it?!
