In the 70s my mother bought an outrageous sofa from the retailer bargain basement. It was classic shape, but LONG. Upholstered in buffalo check *silk*: jewel colour greens, blues & golds. As a teen I was dubious! But it was incredibly durable, looked striking & beautiful in every home she lived in, and lasted the rest of her life. She had great mid-century taste & an artistic design esthetic. Thanks for sparking that happy memory Baiyina! 💖
You’re so right about small rooms. The tv designer Christopher Lowell said small spaces should be like jewel boxes. Bigger things really work. Tiny things make it look like a miniature doll house.
I used to watch Christopher Lowell back in the day! LOVE him! I wish they would bring back shows like his and Martha Stewart's instead of all of the house flipping shows that are on now.
Great design tips today! I like to walk into a space that looks like you just threw together what you already collected over the years and it ALL WORKS! I guess that's called eclectic.
Yes to this!!! There's a saying in Spanish: rules were made to be broken. My '70s modern apartment's most notable architectural feature is that the windows in every room are positioned in a way that makes these walls asymmetrical and, for quite some time now, I have been embracing the look by arranging the furniture in ways that either showcase or mimic this, because I've come to love the quirkiness of it. Painting white (or beige or any other neutral color) small spaces is another design rule I've been, consistently, breaking my whole adult life. I have never lived in a neutral space or had a neutral sofa. Oh, and the new black and white bathroom (my sister's pick, not mine) has graphite gray walls and ceiling...I was a bit scared of painting the ceiling in such a dark color but it looks fantastic!
I agree with all of these, especially painting the ceilings. Even the pros try to get you to use boring flat white paint. I've always loved bringing attention to the ceilings. 👍👍
My friend has a blue one. When he told me he had ordered a blue sofa, and then it was velvet, I admit, kinda cringed & It looks great!!! Has held up for several years and still working for them.
I kept flip-flopping between a navy blue sofa and a white one...I ended up choosing navy...but I plan on getting custom-made white slipcovers eventually. That way, I can have a navy blue sofa during fall/winter, and a white slipcovered Pottery Barn looking sofa during spring/summer.
You’re so right about using large pieces to make a space feel bigger. We recently traded in our tiny sofa for a sectional, and the living room feels palatial now! I love your videos, keep ‘em coming!
LOVE THESE TIPS!!! Especially the one about colored sofas. I LOVE my green one but I know neutral sofas are “in” now, so I was on the fence about changing it to prevent my living room from looking “dated”. Your perspective helped me to realize that I should keep it ☺️
🥳 I desperately need a designer but instead i watch these videos! Thank you for reassuring me about sofa colors! I started to believe i had to pick it beige or grey... BUT i'm now keeping my idea of picking 3 different pastel colors to cover my 3 Chesterfield sofas! Also, two will be velvet and one leather (or the opposite!) I hope to find someone! 🥳
I was worried that the pink/gray/orange basket weave pattern sofa I ordered was going to be too loud but this video just reaffirmed that it's perfect for me! Also BRB while I go paint my interior front door black. Thanks for the great tips!
Comment from previous video. I agree with you on not caring for Grommet Curtains! At times I have used the bottom hem as the top, cut off the grommets and used as the bottom hem. Works well if your curtains length allows.
I love you video !! I’ve broken a few of these rules and it truly looks amazing !! You also just gave me a great idea about the front door !! Thank you ! Love ALL your videos ! 💜
Learning so much from you. I wish I would have found you years ago when we first moved into this space and I thought we wouldn't be here for long and it "didn't matter." lol As soon as I figure out if we are leaving or staying...I will be calling you for a styling session. :)
Great video! I would love for you to delve deeper into creating a space that follows the rules but isn’t perfect. The OCD in me wants everything perfect in my home and it can be off putting to others. Thanks!
Love the tips. Decorating with a purpose while keeping it maintable is my rule, since I have to clean it. I try to stay away from fads and go with my intuition. ✌&💘 to ALL,
Love your casts!! I would like to see the rooms that you are describing for longer views. The eye also needs relief from seeing you at times. I need to look at the room carefully without seeing you. Then when the camera comes back to you, it's such a nice surprise. Your voice is very strong and clear and pleasant. You don't have to be on screen all the time
I love this advice, Baiyina. I am happy that I am breaking some of the rules. I often prefer things off center because I just think it feels better in the right situation, but I’m mindful of balance. Thank you for always sharing Vogue Living advice with us.
Great video. I love a home that is well designed, but also very livable and inviting. I don't want a space that feels too perfect to use or mess up. I wish more people would design with practicality at the forefront, versus trying to make it look like a magazine home to post on social media. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Homes are meant to be lived in!
I love learning about design principles, especially scale. I used to line up small and flimsy furniture against my walls (the student apartment phenomenon) and I’ve been learning to incorporate larger pieces even in smaller spaces. It’s so weird how my giant coffee table somehow opened up my relatively small living room, as did adding a recliner when I didn’t think I had room for a chair!
My new chesterfield sofa with the tufted back is covered in a beautiful loosely botanical linen print in soft colors. It looks wonderful (and very different from what everyone else has) in my English country house style living room filled with antique Chinese porcelain and oil paintings. The sofa plays a large part in making me feel that I'm sitting in a lovely garden which is a joyful feeling.
GREAT VIDEO, I ONCE HAD A FRIEND WHO WOULD LOOK AT A DEPARTMENT STORE ADVERTISEMENT AND DESIGN HIS ROOMS TO LOOK LIKE YOU WALKED INTO A SHOW ROOM, ONCE HE APPLIED BED SHEETS TO HIS BATHROOM WALLS, GORGEOUS, YOU REMIND ME OF HIM WHEN YOU CREATE OR GIVE US TIPS ON BEING CREATIVE. 🫖
I’m considering a terra cotta/ cognac color couch and a dark turquoise / saturated color accent chair. Using that color wheel which is an easy way to find contrasting colors that just work. Hoping the result makes my great room a bit more interesting.
Thank you! I love watching your videos! I don't know why people turn into haters when watching design videos. Yes, one should do what they want in their own space, but designers have more knowledge and have tips that can actually help because they are schooled/have experience in this! If you're just going to see it as "pretentious bullshit" then you likely don't understand design as a creative art form and will end up doing what you want regardless bc you think you know better, So there's no need to post unappreciative hate comments. 😒🙄.
Loved the video - it would be great if you could do videos showing more examples of each broken rule, but breaking them down into more detail, if that makes sense.
In our living room we have a rust colored sofa, my floor is also rust colored.. however my walls in that room are a teal ‘ish blue. I also have a rug which I fought for that is off white, gray and tan. I want to tone down the room and I feel like it needs to start with the sofa. We have loved the color for years but need a change. Anytime we redo a room I am so drawn to colors that I tend to go to far. 😂 I’m hoping to find that balance at some point. Thanks for these tips. We have painted our rooms so much over the years but at least we have experimented.
Thank you so much, I love your advise!! Forgot to mention regarding ceiling color I had the ceiling in both bathrooms painted 50% lighter than the walls and the wood work is a cream color!!! Very dreamy it makes those rooms seem larger. I had a man tell me that he could LIVE in my half bath!!! lol I plan to do the same in the kitchen!!! Cheers
Do you have any videos on lighting? If not, can you do one?. I have two connectors on my hallway ceiling--- between bedrooms--- about 2ft apart that require hard wire... I'm wondering if I should use the same exact flush mount or semi flush mount?? Or use two different lights. I have one semi /flush crystal light that I simply love... Thanks.
I kid you not I’m sitting here planning a lighting video now. Good question. Actually can you email me a pic and maybe I’ll answer in video? Baiyina.com/contact
I live in a small condo. In small rooms, rather than paint a dark colour to give the eye an impression of further space, I avoid overhead lighting. By using table lamps, the entire room is not illuminated so one does not get the sense of the entire limitation of space. You do not see the boundary of all 4 walls simultaneously. The area where you are positioned is well lit, but the space beyond could go to infinity. It works well. As soon as I turn on the overhead light, my space feels considerably diminished.
My theory is collected decor that has a common denominator is more interesting than furniture store look. Also, I think large pieces in small rooms make the room look more important and dark/bold colors in a small space make it look grand.
If you haven’t talked about leather furniture yet. I was wondering how to or can different leather pieces work in the same space, ex. A living room couch and chair in different shades of leather and styles… ?
Always have debunked those tips, especially hanging art at eye level! I am 5'2, one would think that some sort of goblin lived in the home if I hung it based on my sight-line! LOL I go with hanging art in accordance with top of my door casements and most the time I eyeball it. Off topic: when will you continue the decorating tips based on the Zodiac signs? and BTW, that blouse is exquisite on you.
I have a charcoal gray loveseat and I am bored. I threw a colorful fabric remnant piece over the seat part, and I have 8 pillows at the back and sides. Five of the pillows have kilim covers (all from Etsy shops in Turkey) in various colors. I ordered fabric swatches and am considering ordering a loveseat covered in mustard microfiber or velvet. I don't wear yellow or mustard, but I like those colors for furniture.
I said scr*w it, I'm buying what I want. It's going to be deep and color saturated and tactile. So I bought a navy velvet 4 seater sofa. After a year of COVID and sheltering at home people are being vaccinated and we can entertain again, so a week ago I ordered a teal green velvet 3 seater sofa in the same style so we have plenty of room for guests. It's going to look awesome.
I have a deep red leather sofa in the middle of my living room. The high ceilings make the room look larger even though it is not. It really works and I love it.. it's a curved sectional. Glad I broke the rules... eather sectional right in the middle of my apartment living room
Thank you bunches for sharing your helpful insights. 😊 I'm curious to know what the rest of your sentences were when you said, "...because..." & then the editing faded the volume & you switched to your next topic[s]?🤔 🙏🌿🌷🌿🙂🌿🌷🌿🙏

I love those old world homes that look slightly disheveled but outstandingly inviting and beautiful
So, so good!
you should check out shaye Elliotts home, her channel is the Elliott homestead. beautiful old-world cottage that not many people can get right!

I do love a statement, bold colour sofa! 😍❤️ I look forward in doing that in my future home, and not ‘play it so safe’. 🤩
I bought a coral sofa. It is on order and I look at the swatch and second-guess myself. Thanks for validating my choice!
Enjoy, sounds lovely!
Never thought about painting the interior front door... I’m totally doing that! Another reason why this is such a great channel.
It’s so transformative and fun!
This is a great channel, IMHO, because it makes decorator and common sense, all rolled up into one and not dependent on what's new and trendy.
Great video. I understand about the rug size rule But I don’t necessarily want a huge rug in my family room covering up my beautiful wood flooring!
I’m breaking that rule as well! Will do one or two smaller rugs in my living room this time
I have wanted an orange sofa for forever, so I agree 100% that you don't have to have a neutral one.
I love orange and have a lot of orange accents. I think it is a great color for a sofa!
Love imperfection in design. Yes to the velvet sofa!
I live in an 1918 Arts and Crafts home and I painted my living room deep chocolate brown and I love it!
Awesome!

Do it. I have wanted a deep teal or navy one …color so saturated and lovely. Go for it.

Bottom line, make your home your haven and not a designer show room. GET THAT VELVET SOFA 🛋🤪
I welcome this video. I have a lilac couch I thoroughly enjoy and have for many years. Also enjoy mixing metals too.
I love lilac!!
Oh, girl! IYou empower me so much.... Can't wait to break rules and make my styling preferences work for me, us.... Bless you!

Love!

I love these kind of helpful hints...gives me something to ponder when I'm making decisions.
Love the comments. I bought a gray sofa and hated it. After six months I bought a navy sofa and love it.
I would love a fireplace mantle tutorial.
I love this video, and the thought process between breaking these rules in a chic way. Xoxo
Loving the outro music 🎶
Thank you for the tips, especially the one about going for the sofa that you love.
Great video, Baiyina! I never thought about painting the back of my door! Wonderful idea! I agree with everything else. I love this channel!😄
Great info! I like how you’ve laid it out too, combining photos for examples.
Thank you for bringing up these issues! I have a corner fireplace in a small, open area LR, and it has been incredibly challenging to decorate around.

People react badly to being told that they have bad taste. They will always respond with the comfort excuse to hide their embarrassment. 🤷🏻♀️
I love your passion for design! I’m learning so much, especially from videos you share on how you’re creating your own nest. 💜💜💜
I wanted a peacock blue velvet tufted Adler style tuxedo sofa so badly. But I went with a cream knit slope arm. Maybe next time.

I like your advice like watching you you do a great job did you move back to California
Awesome video! Rules are meant to be broken.
I would love a video on decorating a red brick fireplace living room. I feel everyone has painted theirs white and we want to keep the red brick.
I just bought a navy blue couch 🛋 😍
Great advise
I said scr*w it, I'm buying what I want. It's going to be deep and color saturated and tactile. So I bought a navy velvet 4 seater sofa.

If you want cool stuff you have to do the work. So either find a friend with a truck, someone that you can pay, rent one and a lot of places deliver.
The Style Quiz link doesn’t work
For the love of God, RUclips hates my links!! baiyina.com/style-quiz/ this should work!
If you paint the inside of your front door one color, can you paint the other side that faces the street another color? Or is that weird and busy? 🤣
My front door is red facing the street but I would love to paint the inside black.
As I type it, I’m thinking no. Maybe I should paint the whole thing black. Can’t do red....nothing inside my house is red.
Yes do the inside black! You’ll have to paint the sides of the door one of the colors. I’d probably go with black
How about breaking rules of mixing styles that are not really meant to go together?
💜
