  • An off-duty pilot allegedly attempted to shut down a plane’s engines mid-flight. After an Alaska Airlines flight took off from Washington, a crisis erupted. Off-duty pilot Joseph David Emerson was sitting inside the cockpit when he reportedly lunged for the controls and tried to shut off the plane’s engines. The plane diverted to Portland for an emergency landing. He was charged with 83 counts of attempted murder. No passengers were harmed.

Of course the engines could be started again. Fire handles don't kill engines permanently. In a case like this the crew doesn't have to officially "declare" and emergency. It is automatically assumed through the radio communications: "we had an incident with a rouge element in the cockpit, he is subdued in the back, request divert and law enforcement on park".
Tower answers with copy and priority clearance.
This translates as: "Ok were not going freak out the whole airport and airspace but get your ass on terra firma NOW, cops will be there, FBI will be informed, FAA will know, you guys will be segregated for interviews, the airline will come under scrutiny and the passengers will be subtly monitored in case he wasn't a solo party."

I've read books about what happens to a person's mind and body when they don't say "no" enough, and this seems like an example of the dark turn that the human psyche takes when it believes its not allowed to set boundaries.
people sometimes have and extremely hard time setting boundaries when they were taught the belief as children, that if they say "no", they won't be deserving of love. these people tend to repress their desire for rest until they can't repress it anymore, acting on an unconscious impulse to sabotage their own work in an attempt to make it stop.
the neighbors describe him as a person that takes on all these responsibilities outside of his already intense career. this honestly sounds like a case where a man just wanted a break and wasn't considering that this would cost many lives. regardless, he needs help
