  • An Alaska Airlines flight diverted to Portland, Oregon, Sunday after an off-duty pilot in the cockpit unsuccessfully tried to shut down the plane's engines midflight, according to officials. The suspect, Joseph Emerson, was taken into custody by police and charged with attempted murder after the plane landed safely at Portland's airport, officials confirmed to CBS News. Joshua Skule, former FBI executive assistant director for intelligence, joined CBS News to discuss the incident.

    Bravo to the crew for subduing him and safely landing the plane, and the pilot VERY professionally talked to ATC about the situation with a steady voice despite the incident. Level headed ability in a crisis/emergency, well done to the crew for handling this and saving lives.

      I suppose they need to change airline rules and make the cockpit off limits to anyone NOT on Duty or relief crew. This is the second time something like this happened. Good thing that FedEx flight was a cargo flight. They had to use some pretty wild maneuvering, the ATC would have fits trying to keep the required flight limits. One pilot had to retire on medical disability, the other pilot needed months in the hospital to heal.

      He had meticulously planned that crash and locked the PIC out of the cockpit when he went to use the bathroom. Changes were made after that crash to prevent it from happening again. But there was an incident on a FedEx cargo plane when an off duty employee was hitching a ride and attacked the pilot and copilot but they fought back and landed safely. With serious life threatening injuries. They'll probably change jumpseat rules now.

      @@madreepthat was Federal Express Flight 705 back in 1994 where someone was trying to hijack and crash a cargo plane for an insurance paycheck for his family but the crew fought back while they were severely injured. One was fighting back by using the aircraft to use tight turns and dives that the aircraft was not designed to do almost breaking it apart to help the crew and disarm the hijacker. They managed to successfully land the plane even though it was damaged a really terrible situation but came out with a happy ending. Though the pilots weren’t able to fly any planes sadly due to their injuries but all of them were awarded with the highest ranking badge ever received in aviation history. The hijacker was sentenced life in prison.

    When an airline pilot has to “Deadhead”, fly back to another airport as a passenger, he has to fly in the passenger compartment. If the flight is fully booked up with no open seat, the deadhead pilot is allowed to ride on the jump seat with the permission of the captain. Normally, this is no big deal, having an extra set of hand in the cockpit in an emergency. That's the reason you see pilots in uniform waiting at the gate to the plane, if there is no empty seat he'll ask the captain if he could ride in the jump seat.

    • @reecom9884

      To clarify an airline pilot as a “Deadhead”, he is flying to another airport as a passenger, he has to fly in the passenger compartment and his ticket is paid by the airline. He is also paid a travel rate by the company for traveling to pickup a flight in another city. A pilot commuting is traveling from his home to the hub he is paid to fly out of and is called a commuting pilot. He is not paid by the airline for his travel time or given a company paid ticket, he has to catch rides if there is an empty seat available on the flight or ride in the jump seat.

    That is another glitch in programming if it had worked without a fire warning coming from the engine, you don't allow both engines to shut down if there are no fire warnings triggered. You might have to do it you should be forced to enter some verification of this on the computer terminal by the pilot.

      An engine can be on fire while fire indications did not trigger due to a failed detection system, or parameters not met. (Usually it's the temperature in exhaust, but the fire can be elsewhere, like auxiliary equipment/generator, maybe fuel lines ruptured in the pylons.)
      It can even be regular engine controls got stuck and failed to close, in those cases the fire handles can be used as back up (pull to close the valves, turn to discharge single use fire retardant bottles)

    Would be curious for an aviation expert to weigh in on whether the plan would have crashed the plane if it had worked -- obviously impossible to know for sure, but would be interesting to hear an opinion on whether the pilots would have had enough time and altitude to attempt a dead stick landing at a nearby airport

      Hi there, I flew 20 years as an air force pilot, and currently with a major US airline. The jumpseat pilots actions are very concerning as far as wondering why he would do that. It is truly bizarre. As far as operational safety is concerned, if he had managed to shut down an engine, or even both, the pilots at the controls would have simply restarted them. We train for this, but it's one of those one in a million type events that 99.9% of pilots will never have to do except in a simulator their whole career. This pilot basically threw his career away and potentially faces jail time. However, no sane pilot would have done something like this so it is highly likely something significantly unusual was happening with him. The media loves to hype up events like these and play on people's fear and lack of understanding in order to boost ratings, which I find enormously unprofessional. We as pilots take safety seriously and paramount in all of our decision making, to the point where sometimes difficult conservative calls are made that we understand will be inconvenient to passengers. For us as operators nothing trumps a safe operation, meaning all the bean counting and financial considerations management is concerned with have no place on the flight deck.
      Edit: just read in another article that it was the fire handles the guy pulled. Yeah, that can be bad. On most jet aircraft it is irreversible. In this case the crew quickly reset them before it was too late. Shutting down the engines can be done in a few different ways (direct and indirect). Good on the crew acting quickly.

    • @ElitistMagi
      @ElitistMagi 10 месяцев назад

      Of course, at 30'000 they have close to 100 miles to look for a place to land.
      I would assume that they'll have full electrical power and with that hydraulics since APU should still be available to them.

      @dav34 It depends. Every aircraft is different when it comes to what exactly happens when the fire handles are pulled. Some can be restarted while others disconnect parts that are irreversible in flight. In this case the airline spokesperson said the crew quickly reset the fire handles before reaching a state in the engine, fuel supply, and fire suppression where things may have been more dire. I don't know the specifics of this type jet aircraft.

    • @AmyEugene
      @AmyEugene 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@dav34 And this is based off of how many years of experience piloting commercial aircraft? I've watched a lot of Mayday! Air Disasters and even I know that pilots can restart the engines. One person in the jump seat vs. two pilots at the controls has essentially zero chance of crashing a plane from cruising altitude. The suicidal pilot in the Germanwings crash was only successful because he locked the other pilot out of the cockpit, so he had full control of the plane. There was another incident, I believe it was in Africa, that had a similar scenario to Germanwings.

      As a pilot, no. Those fire handles can shut the engines down immediately for the event of an engine fire. The levers shut the engine down by shutting fuel off otherwise the fuel would just keep feeding the fire and cause a potentially catastrophic situation.
