  • Lex Fitzgerald wanted to give her daughter the best birthday party ever. Unfortunately, her 5-year-old daughter was left sitting all alone at the end of a long decorated table waiting for her classmates, who never show up for her party. Desperately trying to save her daughter's birthday, Fitzgerald sent out a plea on social media for anyone with young kids to show up to the party. Within 15 minutes, people started to arrive. Inside Edition's Ann Mercogliano has more.

My friend and I were invited to a 18th birthday party for a kid we knew but not super well, we almost didn’t go because of that but we decided to stop by, we were the only two who showed up. He had the house all set up and we ended up just going mini golfing with his family because it was just the 2 of us. Our hearts broke for him even as an 18 year old, this shows the importance of showing up because we have often thought back to “what if we decided not to go”

After he died his sister got in touch with her and told her that she and her boyfriend were the only people apart from family who ever visited him in hospital, and thanked her saying it had been very lonely for him and he was very cheered up by her visits. I really mean it too. I have 4 children, 3 girls, 1 boy. I see the snobbery among the parents. It’s hurtful and petty. The kids need to see their classmates at their birthday parties to make them feel great and help celebrate their moment. Did you catch that? Their moment! Caddy wives, $notty dads make the child experience horrible. The kids need the joy shared among their own, the parents have nothing to do with it. I have to say this post really emotionally touched me.

as a former unpopular child. I would have hated having some kids I don't really know well come to my party because a well meaning parent thinks I don't deserve to be alone. Having to pretend I'm friends with them, worse than not having a party at all. You can't force friendship, the birthday kid knows it, your kids know it; it'll just be awkward for all of them.

I am a school teacher and some years ago a colleague and I became aware of such a plot amongst our 7th graders. One mean girl circulated a letter telling the other girls to RSVP yes, but instructed them not to attend the party. We called in the mean girls' parents and their response was shocking! They supported their daughter's actions and commended her for being a good judge of "class".
The birthday girl was delightful and without flaw, but the other children were terrified of the mean girl so they were too scared to cross her.
I am certain this is what happened to you. One nasty piece of work dissuaded the others. There was nothing wrong with you.
24 years later, I still remember that child and her awful parents and get a sick taste in my mouth. She probably has had this effect on many people. She had no class at all, just money, but was too egotistical to know the difference.

While I was watching the video I thought it would had been better for the little girl not be there during the interview, because that makes her remember the hurtfull moment again. I think it was better for the girl that her experience ended with the memory of the number of people who did show up to her party. Obviously the mother has not done it with bad intentions, I can tell. As for how the mother handled the party situation, wow! marvelous! ❤

that's sad. I'm an adult and have family members every year suggest that we don't do gifts. I fought this idea every year by telling them I'd still get them one (which I would do).... and so they keep giving me gifts. As a disabled person who lives alone and don't get to see family members often, it just feels nice getting a few gifts from family members each year (I don't care if the gift is cheap, it's just nice to have any gift no matter how small).

That has got to hurt, especially as you were not yet an adult. One should feel special on one’s birthday. It hurts even as an adult; I don’t get presents or cards from my family either, not even from my son. My husband and I buy ourselves a present from our joint savings, but I have to choose my own present and it really doesn’t mean much to me. Same story at Christmas. From there we became best friends until the day I had to move out, my last memory of her was holding a big container of cheese balls waving goodbye to me and my family with a big smile. She was always there, even during the process of my family moving, she’d be happy to hang out. Sadly haven’t been able to talk to her since that day but I hope she’s doing well:)

We made everything ourselves and was so adorable. 3 kids did show up thankfulky. 1 came later so was only 2 for most of it. Broke my child's heart. She had waited at the door for everyone to show up. And kept asking where they were. After that year I never planned for more than say 8. I knew all 40 wouldn't show so that's why we invited so many and I figured at least 15 or so would show. Just broke my heart for her. Now I try my best to reach out and get others to come and invite lots of family as well hoping for anyone with kids to show up. She's had a couple now with at least 10 kids which is nice but also a few with only 2 to 3. Bugs me when others RSVP and don't come when they didn't have an emergency or anything else going on. I told her I had no money to buy a gift and that I was barely making it, and I apologized. She softened her voice and said, we had so much food, and it would have been nice to have you guys come. A couple years ago my son was invited to a birthday party of a kid he barely knew. He invited the whole class and only my son showed up. I was so glad that my son was available that day because I would have felt terrible knowing no one showed.

I think worse than the Party absence is the mother talking about it on TV with her on her mother's lap. I would have been mortified if my mother did that. 🤦🏾‍♀️

I don't know why so many people excuse themselves from their commitments now. It seems like it's more likely that people disregard them than take them to heart.

That went from an empty table with a happy birthday girl to a restaurant full of happy birthday guests. This is awesome. I have always wanted to show up to something like this and take my kids just to support other families. Thank God people showed up 👏🏾👍🏾🙏🏾❤️.

This brought me into tears to see how this lovely girl was rejected and dishonoured by those who ought to have remembered her with kindness and love to share her special day, even though they may like or not like the girl.

The people who didnt show up should be ashamed of themselves. Theres no reason to hurt this little girl period.
Thanks to everyone else who were adults and their kids.

Almost ten years ago my son was invited to a birthday party of a special needs kid in his class. My son was the only one who showed up and he and the classmate had a really good time at the park playing and cooking out. This happened two years in a row! I felt so bad for the boy as I have a special needs son of my own and I know how hurt he would have been if no one showed up to his party!

This happened to one of my teenagers on their 16th. It was a weekend summer day and the previous day all had told me they were coming. Thirty plus years later, I still cry at the memory. Bless those parents and kids.

No one turned up for my 21st. I still got upset for a while but learned those peotdontbmatter. Those same people used to tell me all the time I'm to blunt, I'm tactless and far to litteral and it's embarrassing for them.. and I eventually found out these was the reasons they kept canceling plans with me.. fast forward some years just before my 37 birthday I was dinaosed autistic and that's the reason they didn't really like me 😂 I've over it now! Screw them! I've since had amazing party's with amazing people who like me for me and wouldn't leave me out and push me out of things! I hope your child heals from the hurt from it. It's not a nice feeling.

@@rbmw981 I'm so sorry. Some of the smartest most unique people ever have this gift. I had a friend's 8 year old son in the car with my 3 yr old daughter and a blinding snowstorm closed the road. I was not very familiar with their town so didn't dare take side streets. Michael normally recited every word with ads of all the shows he'd watched the night before. Suddenly I realized he was repeating street names and turns. I followed his directions and we arrived at his house the back way. His mom didn't even know he knew the way by memory. Forty five years later I'm still amazed. Blessings.

Even on my 18th birthday I preferred playing god of war to socializing. I'd say it all depends on the individual. But more than likely, someone who has good meaningful friendships will still have someone show up if asked.

That's awful! What I can't understand is why people would say they plan on coming and just bail? If you can't go, then it's better just to say so. It's far more hurtful to lie.

@@Momoyueyeah I agree. It wastes someone's time and it can be mentally draining to be left in the dark about what is happening.
