      Just a suggestion. You may look into staining the concrete to look like slate/rock or something, possibly even something artistic, before polishing. I don't know if that would work or not. I've seen some pretty crappy looking polished concrete at our local stores. That may just be because they started out with old and messed up slabs though. Or because of the company doing the work.
      Good luck.

      See the dirt right outside the hangar? As soon as some ends up inside, a light dusting, that polished concrete is going to be as slippery as ice.

    Hey Trent, Way cool! What brand of lights did you use?

  • @KiloLima
    @KiloLima Год назад +2

    I have ground and sanded concrete in my hangers. It’s fantastic and it’s really beautiful . It’s technically not "polished". It’s incredibly durable and almost nothing hurts it. And if it did, it would only add to the character … nothing to stress about. I’d never choose another flooring for my hangers. It turned out so good we’re using a slightly polished concrete in our pending remodel. I’d guess you’ll be thrilled with it over epoxy. It handles traffic really well.
    One thing I did notice … when my hangers were built the steel showed up red like yours. My GC had ordered it in black … he was really picky about the aesthetic. He made them repaint it all in black on-site … and I’m so glad he did. I had tried to tell him not to stress, it wouldn’t matter. It actually really adds to the fished building and the final aesthetic of the buildout being black.
    Congratulations on your building and success. Look at all you’ve done! Congratulations … blue skies! K

    • @jeffa847

      What did you use on your floors to keep oil from absorbing/staining?

    • @jeffa847
      @jeffa847 Год назад

      I did what might be kind of similar to what you have. I was grinding floors to put epoxy on and then it looked so cool that I don't want to cover it up.
      Mine is not smooth - kind of semi-rough which is what I want. It would be perfect if I could find something that would seal it without really changing the color or glazing it over
      There's the 'penetrating sealer' they use on polished floors but from what I have seen that doesn't really work to keep oil out. Maybe you get away with it if you wipe it up immediately but if oil drips somewhere and you don't wipe it up quick it will soak into the concrete.

    • @KiloLima
      @KiloLima Год назад

      When I did my floors it was in the early days of stained concrete which used acids. As you did … when working through the process I elected to refrain from a super smooth “polish” as it would have been too slippery on wet and humid days. And I didn’t want a polished shine as it would show dust, dirt, traffic. So after I got them smooth to my preface I played with spraying different layers of color for the finish I wanted. The first hangar turned out amazing. I used a flat, no sheen high solid sealer. You can look up all kinds online … high solid concrete sealer … but even some of the Home Depot stuff will suffice with maintenance every year or so. Get yourself a floor buffer / burnished. For the old fashion techniques. However … todays fully polished techniques get a color coat and that’s it. They’re amazing. No sealers are necessary unless you’re doing more. My floors can be seen in a pic on instagram.com/theairplaneco. Trent’s in a perfect place to start and have fun with his finish. I wanted to put some old diamond pattern tire prints through mine … like a warbird / P40 had been there. But I didn’t do it … your turn, Trent.

    Men!!! Good lights
    By the minute 5:00 you were arguing about epoxy or polished floor: My opinion:
    If $ is not a deal, go for a good/best epoxy
    If you work or/and thers a polibility of dropped oil, whater, soap, metal chips or whatever (gasoline... Coolant...) Go for epoxy
    If you whant a good clean surface
    Go for epoxy. And buy a good degraser and floor product
    Polished works good, but it doesnt get old as good.
    The same for cheap epoxy
    I learned this from Where i've worked for a couple of years
    Hope this helped you
    For me is a big deal epoxy floor

    Definitely polished floors. They did it where I work and is very durable. You can spill oil or something on it and it doesn’t absorb it. Well I’m sure for a long time it might but short term it just wipes right off. I wouldn’t use epoxy if you gave it to me. Looks great too. Don’t know cost but I would pretty much say you won’t be disappointed. Buy once cry once kind of deal.

    • @jeffa847
      @jeffa847 Год назад

    We had polished & waxed concrete in our 4000 square ft shop for five years. Never once experienced it being slippery, but we kept it dry. Never experienced what it might be like with saw dust or anything like a fine powder though...might be an issue.
    We also used rugs at all the entry doors. So much easier to keep the floor clean if everyone wipes their feet.

  • @backcountyrpilot
    @backcountyrpilot Год назад

    Trent, I had my shop and hangar polished to 3,000 grit. I do not recommend it unless you want to work hard to keep it clean.
    My 3600 sf shop was built in 2011 and my 3600 sf hangar in 2015.
    I had then polished in 2016. Both were in North Idaho on pure sandy soil on high ground. Both had a vapor barrier under the slab.
    The cost was $24,000 for all 7,200 SF in 2016. The shop had 6 rooms. The hangar had 2.
    White efflorescence appeared on top of the polished concrete of both until at least when I sold them in 2019.
    As a RUclipsr it might be worth keeping on top of it, but figure you will need a floor buffer.

I also like the arrangement of the individual lights to make that hexigonal shape. the main disadvantage to "polished" or even hard trowel is "spills" make slippery. heavy maintenance hangers mainline airlines tend to have simple light "whisk broom" finish with inexpensive penetrating sealant (as slips and falls of employees are expensive). polished or epoxy are both pricey with the floor area of a hanger but look really cool and are typically seen for showrooms and exec jet use. airlines will have epoxy in areas where acids are used as in a plating shop however

    The ‘lessons learnt’ you have acquired since you began this project, when used to formulate ‘Best Practices’, can provide for helping an awful lot of folk, who adopt the ‘off airport’ flying experience (“Bush planes”) and want to hangar their aircraft on their property.
    Your expertise and experience - made available on commission - represents a significant opportunity for a compelling business model sought after by many inside and outside of the USA.
    South America and the Caribbean are ready for Experimental & Light Sport Aircraft and the support products & services required to make the ownership experience easy to manage.
    If that strike ever gets in the way of pursuing your livelihood, you know what you can turn to 😉

    Trent look into coval sealer after you polish the floors. It goes down as a sealer and top coat using a pump sprayer. No slip, clear, ceramic, nothing can soak into the concrete. Oil, rust, acid, paint, brake cleaner, nothing goes through it. You can wipe oil up a month later with a paper towel and it won’t have soaked in. Very easy product to use. Thank me later!

    We went with polyurea floors instead of epoxy. Didn't love the slickness of the concrete and the potential staining. Polyurea looks very similar to epoxy but its a flexible system so the durability is significantly better.

    Great video! My first thought when I saw the thumbnail... TRON! 🤣 My second thought was AWESOME! You can (almost) never have too much light, glad to hear they are dimmable. Totally jealous of the airplane digs (and yours and Hailey"s digs in general)! Keep up the awesome content.

    Man Trent, what an awesome, relaxing video to wrap up a busy weekend for me. Thanks, and it was a special treat to see Hayley! 🥰

    The lights are fantastic. Go with the polished concrete. I have both epoxy and polished in my basement. The polished is much better, but it is much more slippery when wet.

    Great choice on lighting! 🙂 Hard work installing but WELL WORTH IT ! 🙂 FYI - You might be able to disconnect the 100% and 70% feature, once the floor is polished. The floor will reflect some light back up into the work space 🙂 I agree with other comments - you need runway lighting. LED's work for that, too. 🙂 Concrete apron ? ?

    Done many fire stations with polished concrete where they actually wash the engines in the apparatus bay…with the right sealer it’s not slippery when wet.

    Your lights look amazing, It's so nice to see hailey ahaven't seen her for a long time! Maybe if you promise not to do scary things while you're flying, she would be with you more! Always look forward to your videos, Thank you for taking the time to make them.

    Very cool! Perhaps have the area in front of your garage door tared as this will prevent dust and mud from finding it's way into your hanger. Congratulations!
