I just re watched this operation with my dad who was in the Navy during Vietnam. He's in his last days, but he got a kick out of it by how fast the Iranian speed boats can be and the Carrier operations were impressive CAP! Two Thumbs up from a Vietnam Vet my Dad. The Destroyers turning to hunt and kill brought back a few memories of Carrier Tactics. Well done Reapers!
This was probably the most realistic one yet. The escort ships actually did their job and defended the Carrier. This was exciting watch. It is probably as close as we can get to the real thing. Hearing those CIWS and bushmaster guns going had my heart racing.

That was most excellent Cap. Real tactics made such a difference. Hats off to the programmers for making actual changes. It was so much more realistic. I never thought we would see the day when the carrier got itself out of harms way and the DD/CA screen acted like...well....a real screen. EPIC.

not really in the real life the boat would have gone after the destroyers and wouldn't have gone into a kill zone. I think the only thing the simulation get right was those Mavericks , they could make a mincemeat of the boats if enough of them get fired
Well what you haven't taken into account is the Anti Ship Ballestic Missiles and Anti Aircraft Missiles and also Anti Ship Missiles installed on Speedboats almost all Iranian Gunboats carry Shoulder Launched Anti Aircraft Missiles and also Carry at least 2 Anti Ship Missiles too. While you stimulated Iranians running out of ammo but you didn't count American Navy running out of Ammo and if American Navy defeats Iranian navy in the Strait of Hormoz still they won't be able to leave Iranian coast which run almost 100 miles more along the Gulf of Persia. Anti Ship Missiles are deployed in heavy numbers all along the coast. Even if Americans take out entire force of Iranians along the gulf of hormuz they still won't be safe from other Iranian attack position. My estimate for casualty of this conflict is around 150 Gunboats along with it's crew and few drone and radar operators of Anti Ship and Anti Aircraft Missiles running at max at 1500-2000 Iranians. While heavy iranian attack on retreating formation of Americans navy is 3 Warships sunk and 1 taking light to heavy damage. @@rnash999 Gotta keep in mind the navigation of all involved was scripted and fairly static. Real destroyer would have turned sooner and reacted to shadow from further off while spitting all she had the entire time.
At 25:23 seeing that destroyer turning in towards the camera like that gave me goosebumps. Imagine how scary that must be in real life! I'd just be like: "Okay, where's the surrender button?"

Something to note: The tanker was apparently Iranian and being seized back by the Iranians The catamaran was the Shahid Nazeri, the current flagship of the IRGC-N and is a patrol boat not a corvette. However they do have at least 3 catamaran corvettes under construction right now dubbed Shahid Soleimani

And back then Iran had just had a revolution and was unorganized and unstable yet they still managed to hold off the Iraqis which were supported by both the US and the USSR with weapons and equipment. Iran got most of it's stuff from Syria and China and whatever was left from the old governments armory. So to answer your question. No they did not loose.
Cap. Thanks for this amazing video. I just wanted to clarify what is being deliberately misreported in the west. In this incident, the US destroyer was trying to seize the tanker and the Iranian ships stopped the seizure. Not the other way around! Of course no one wants to say that here! Nonetheless the Iranians seem quite suicidal in the way they are dealing with a US Destroyer!!!!
When the gunboats passed the DD's, they could have knocked out their phalanx and radars with the duska's. More spacing for the drones so that a single SM-3 doesn't knock out 20 of them at a time. Make the attack happen at the same time, the boats were too slow, the drones too fast. The shield should be a valid target for them.

How to spice this up; maybe have the Iranians have proper Aircraft in the Mix along with Missile Boats and their Frigates. On the US Side; have either a large Recon plane or Drone (like JSTARS or Global Hawk) to scan the Surface for threats and a bigger CAP with maybe even land based craft to support the group. This would be a high priority mission then having some Frigates tagging along for support for the carrier would make sense, they would probably be some form of LCS variant as the Constellation class hasn't entered service so using either the Oliver Hazard Perrys or if they're in the game the FREMM as a stand in for the Constellations (as it will be a variant of this) might work.
I was watching the drones and thinking, "I wonder if the radar can pick up the blob of the swarm, and just have SM-2s detonate their proximity fuses in the middle of the group?" And then an SM-2 blew up in the middle of the group and dropped multiple drones at once. Well done.
Hey Cap tho all the boghammers were programmed to only attack the carrier but if they were programmed to attack the carrier group as a whole I think they would have disabled or seriously damaged several destroyers as many of them crossed the picket line. Also, Iranian SAMs should have been there to defend the missile sites.

I am a pacifist to the very bottom of my soul, against all sorts of war etc. How you've managed to reel me in to the point I don't miss an episode is beyond reason but I love what you do with these videos!
Before watching the actual fight with knowledge of the setup I would: 1) engage Silkworms with SM2, 1a) If a Silkworm get's past the SM2s then ESSM, RAM, and PHALANX should engage., 2) Engage Boghammer's with aircraft until close-in, 3) Engage drones with aircraft if available, 4) Chew up any leftover Boghammer or Drone with PHALANX Surface mode because that's what it was designed to do.
I love working nights with the helos, just inside the skin of the ship on a Burke at the waterline and getting woken up during gun shoot days. I would lay there under the red lights and just listen to the 25mm, 5in, CIWS, Browning half inches and M240s while at the same time hearing the water over the hull and being rocked. Pure sensory pleasure
In the confined space of the Persian Gulf, the escorts would never leave the carrier, and do not have to. Their SPY 1 / 6 radar system and VLS give them a 360 degree coverage of the entire gulf. They would literally see the planes taking off from Iran and forming up. Missile keys would be turned and the system put into automatic. Also the helicopters and planes from shore bases would enter the fray and kill small boats. At the end of the sim, it was asked if this was realistic? I would say yes. The software and hardware is always being updated. I would say that the only unrealistic thing was that the 5" were not shooting the silkworms. This was done in the 90's when the Iranians shot some at US warships with some success. With newer radars and control systems, this would be easier with the more modern 5" gun and its newer proximity fuses. Plus silkworms are SLOW and HUGE respectively.
@Grim Reapers Just to let you know, when i was a flight deck yellow shirt on the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT CVN 71, we had 45 aircraft on deck. ship wide there was 82 total. during the Persian Gulf war there was two aircraft from the Iraqi AF 400 miles out on intercept heading for us, we launched every aircraft turning. trust me when i say you need to rework your model.

If Mod 0 Sea Wolf could knock 4.5in shells doing over Mach 1 out of the air I don't think these slow and much larger drones are going to trouble a system like Aegis nearly 40 years on.
no it won't trouble an aegis or similar....it will however run it out of ammunition and in real life the drones will just keep coming in by the hundred.....thats the second scary part of drone warfare.....add to that the drones ability to home in on any electronic emissions including jamming and it makes them very hard to counter with current weapons systems......i'd imagine in future we may see 30 and 50cal close in weapons systems liberally festooned on every military ship, vehicle and fixed position as standard equipment

@@unhippy1 Yeah, thing is, these drones can and will be jammed as well. The cheaper they are, the easier they are to be jammed long before they get to the fleet. That’s why the Arleigh Burke’s just got fitted with a new electronic warfare system. Beyond that, lasers. Lasers have an unlimited magazine depth and can already, today, take down drones. People like to write about the irrelevance of the carrier group because of whatever new tech is the fad, but chances are we already have the stuff to defeat it today.

Dude as a sailor in the Canadian Navy this was fucking awesome. Pretty much what we're trained to do when we roll with the Americans; we'll throw our ships in like cannon fodder with the Arleighs to save the carrier's
Exciting watching the set-up... I transited the Strait a dozen times in 1987-96. I remember the pucker-factor, and launching in an SH-60B a few times loaded with Hellfires, AND sitting in CIC/Strike on the carrier a number of times when I was "older". We ALWAYS had their Port and any KNOW Styx/Chinese missile sites targeted with Cruise missiles. DANG that was exciting after watching - from 0-120mph in seconds, and 5-10 minutes of terror.
It was really interesting...but... I think you have not taken into account some critical parameters: -Iran has a long shore across the Persian gulf and will not initiate an attack just from one point. (you have to change the model to a more multi-directional attack) -They currently have faster surface to sea missiles which they can hide in a passenger VANs and shoot at any location on the beach -You have not taken into account the air cover of old mighty F-14s -You have not taken into account the heavy SAM coverage in the area if they are going to initiate such an attach (something like "Sevom Khordad" which brought down the Global Hawk a while ago") -Most of those speed boats are equipped with rocket launchers -Some of those are equipped with light anti aircraft missiles like Stinger too -No one initiate a drone swarm that close to each other which the opponent can bring multiple of them down by a single missile blast wave -Also, I don't know how long would it take, to take about 120 Mavericks out of the box and load them on 30 F-18s, and bring them up to the deck. I don't think they are sitting in the lower deck fully loaded with Mavericks by default. -And finally, they are heavily promoting their short range pin pointing ballistic missiles which they believe they are the main threat to the aircraft carriers. it would be interesting if you can simulate it again factoring these parameters in... :)
The Iranian timing was off which meant it became a piecemeal attack. Just perfectly shows how difficult a time on target attack is to co-ordinate. Could add AA sites and dispersion to the Silkworm site to help? Those Hornets got a too easy ride.

Drones should come in at a couple of different directions at wave height. Also there would be more than 50 so 200. The small boat swarm would also engage at different angles and they do have missile boats. So a mix of small boats would be better and much more realistic. There would also be a CAP up as well. Silk worm missiles and radar need to be spread out abit as well.
@@ColonelHoganStalag13 Air and surface attacks against a CBG that's specifically designed and organised to defend against exactly that is only ever going to end one way. Now if DCS had torpedoes and mines (especially homing mines) modelled properly then you'd see how much fun can be had when you take the carrier air wing and all those Aegis systems out of the equation entirely.

It seems to me that the escort ships would be a priority for the Boghammers. For exactly this reason. If that first Destroyer had gotten pounded one or two that were essentially torpedos what is its combat effectiveness after that? It would also be nice to see them with a mix of weapons like they often have, though I realize that might be hard on the server. But a 106 mm recoilless rife is going to hurt the thin skin of a modern destroyer, even the Dushka's and some RPG fire could damage sensitive equipment, reducing the effectiveness of the ship. THe Silkworms might be set to target the biggest thing in the water. But the Boghammers have wetware guidance systems.
This was an amazing battle. A one-sided battle but an amazing one nonetheless. My only critique is that the carrier should've sent up Seahawk helicopters packing missiles in addition to the Hornets. If getting atomized by a Maverick was bad for those boats, imagine how much worse it would've been if those Hornets were packing Stormbreakers.

This was bloody awesome to view. I'd try an attack after the US Navy passes the straight with two different groups of boats assaulting the carrier group in a pincer movement, w/ missiles and drones coming from the Iranian coast into the center of the US Navy. Spread the defense out a bit and see how it handles the zerg boat rush from 2-3 directions.
I'd litter the sea bed with mines, especially homing models that release a torpedo when they're triggered. An SM-2 or Phalanx is worth exactly squat against a weapon like that.

I'd have thought that spreading the silkworms out, concealing them, holding them back & then using a lot of them to take out the pickets as the fast patrol craft get close should be a thing. Also, arguably, wait to launch the drone swarm & the silkworm strike until the fast boats are closer to the target. Also, have the fast boat groups take different routes to the target, start from different places give the fast boat crews manpads as well as dushkas & put some air defences around the Iranian land based assets, because it wouldn't be a fun place to fly...
The follow-up action that would ensue after the hornets that are airworthy would rearm and would be hunting every Iranian naval, missile, and airforce asset in the gulf. Let alone what the Arleigh Burkes and subs would unleash on the coastline after the sun goes down. I am sure the Iranians have not forgotten what Ronald Reagen did to them in the 1980s.
The only realistic way Iran ever gets to touch and harm the navy is if they staged a peacetime ambush , during a war they will be smoked hard from about 500kms away
SM-2 would actually detonate when its own warhead senses proximity. So the millisecond it enters the swarm it would detonate. Edit: CIWS would also completely shred any subsonic thing entering its range. It even shoots at CHAFF autonomously. It doesnt get confused. If theres any sort of radar blip thats not marked it will shoot at it.
The one asset every sim missed is the Burks will also have many sailors on gunpoints around the ship wit .50,30, and other weapons. It is an awesome sight when they light them all up!
Well at least it wasn't the canadian attack on shipping. CF-18's had a bad attack run on an Iraqi frigate. nothing worked... anti-ship missiles failed to lock on. Bombs failed to drop, then when they went to guns, they only got off about 50 rounds each before BOTH guns on the 2 CF-18's jammed. apparently sand had gotten EVERYWHERE and just messed up everything on the poor cf-18's.
@@humansvd3269 first iraq war. not 2nd. it was one of the silly jokes with that... and on those grounds, we got the US to upgrade the CF-18's for us. the problem was... they would only upgrade the ones in the theater... so someone in the canadian military got the silly idea that... we needed to rotate arecraft into the theater so the previous ones could have their airframes checked. we got about half our aircraft upgraded before someone in the US military got wize to what we were pulling.

From what I remember regards the tanker. It was being used by Iran to smuggle oil. The US Navy was coming to seize it, so the Iranians snatched it first.
I think the CIWS is unrealistically underwhelming. It misses way too much. Also, in real life there would be sailors manning .50's on the railings and the big guns would be more accurate as well.
CIWS made me almost piss myself hearing that shit. They give a warning they’re gonna fire but I somehow didnt hear it, walked on the catwalk and fuuuuck that thing was loud and terrifying. Wouldn’t be the first time i pissed myself, won’t be the last.
When shooting at boats the CIWS is almost always in manual, meaning there is a real person aiming the gun through its camera. A second long burst throws 75 tungsten rounds towards a target. If even a quarter of those rounds hit, which they often do, anything topside would be turned into a mangled eviscerated mess. So those videos everybody is talking about... yea... You're also right. There would be crew served M240's and M2's on the lifelines. The DDG and the FAC/FIAC would have traded a lot more fire. Also it's worth noting, that Carrier would not be launching fighters in the middle of a surface action unless the excrement had really REALLY hit the fan. And by that I mean a asymmetrical combat situation where there was an incoming air strike, (not drones or missiles but planes), A submarine threat, a surface action, and a unmanned vehicle swarm. Finely, DCS does not model the U.S. Navy's MK-45 MOD 4 5"/54 caliber lightweight gun very well. HE-VT shells would be the weapon of choice for slow drones like that. A ship would be loath to use its SM2 inventory on tightly grouped drones like that. Especially with a battery of ASCM's are launching from the coast.
I loved how when the Iranian trained the machine gun on the destroyer the DDG trained its 127 on the Iranian The weakness of a drone swarm is if a big missile like an SM-2 hits a lot of drones are going down. Also I think the carrier got the first Silkworm that almost got through. Also it looks like RC's tail hook was down the whole time
I really enjoyed this one. Youre the best Experimental Naval/Air warfare scenario engineer around. I heard you talking about having trouble with telling people are church what you do. I was in the navy for 10 years, i could make finger painting done in poo be sold like the mona lisa.
Because ships can unmask more weapons, EW and fire control directors off their beam, the escorts would probably zig zag away from the threat, like alternating a 45 degree tack away. They want to be able to employ those weapons systems while trying to keep the range open. Most likely the CG would probably try to keep up with the CV and keep the best position for air defense while the DDG's zig zag and do their best to engage surface threats. Once air threats got within engagement range, the CG would turn some to unmask all its directors and EW systems while engaging vampires.
Thank you for revisiting this. I was thoroughly confused with the last run of the boghammers. I'm always humbled by the wisdom of your subscribers comments, but my take away, after reading David Crist's book, Twilight War, was that the IRGC derives its bravado from fanaticism and a handful of marginal victories against the US by means of subterfuge. The rare instance, OP Praying Mantis, where the IRGC and/or Iranian Navy met the US Navy without pretense was devastating for Iran.
Reading comments I’ve come to an interesting thought for another sim.. First of all a gun mounted to a frame of a boat that small running thar fast over waves and wakes wouldn’t hit anything.. I don’t think anyone is even dumb enough to try that lol.. what would be much more appropriate would be seeing if those vessels can hold the weigh of Torpedo launch tubes on the side and if the Iranians are even have the supply enough for this.. I’d mount two single tubes on each boat.. send three groups from different angles of attack with 100’ spreads on the blast within each group.. wouldn’t waste time with drones as that just isn’t a real threat to a navel fleet unless they can send thousands.. Each of the three boat groups would at the center have a corvette or some other larger vessel that can defend the smaller boats till they can get to close enough but out of deck gun range launch torpedos and flee.. maybe a few of them loaded with explosives continue on.. all while launching some worms from multiple locations.. backed up by s300 to defend them against anything getting too close.. there is too much air support as I said before.. it takes time to arm fighters and time to get them to the deck.. this sort of engagement you’d have maybe 5-10 fighters ready at best.. they would actually be scrambling ground aircraft from near buy bases cause they would arrive faster then the carrier could get aircraft loaded, fueled and in the air.. 30 f18’s wo prior advanced warning and preparation is a spontaneous attack would take a full day to happen.

Could you run a simulation of what would have happened on the 1st of May 1982, if the Argentine carrier, which spotted the British task force first but didn't have enough wind, was able to launch her air wing? Could the Skyhawks have changed the course of the conflict?
The Iranians have been doing this since the 1970s. I was at the con taking a US Navy tanker through the Straights of Hormuz when the Iranians (Islamic Republic) messed with me in the early 2000s. They had a patrol craft and speed boats that would cut across my bow and yell stupid stuff on the radio. They even had guys on jet skis (with their cute Iranian flags) armed with RPGs driving around me. I told the Iranians that I am restricted in my draft and in traffic scheme. I told them on VHF that I would run them down if the got in my way and I am leaving their Holy Land. I did not alter course and they got out of my way.

What is the use of speedboats going through the destroyers getting picked off going after the tanker. You would've expect some kind of attack on the warships. Maybe a suicide run with explosives, or an attack with rpg's.

I just re watched this operation with my dad who was in the Navy during Vietnam. He's in his last days, but he got a kick out of it by how fast the Iranian speed boats can be and the Carrier operations were impressive CAP! Two Thumbs up from a Vietnam Vet my Dad. The Destroyers turning to hunt and kill brought back a few memories of Carrier Tactics. Well done Reapers!

This was probably the most realistic one yet. The escort ships actually did their job and defended the Carrier. This was exciting watch. It is probably as close as we can get to the real thing. Hearing those CIWS and bushmaster guns going had my heart racing.

not really in the real life the boat would have gone after the destroyers and wouldn't have gone into a kill zone. I think the only thing the simulation get right was those Mavericks , they could make a mincemeat of the boats if enough of them get fired

While you stimulated Iranians running out of ammo but you didn't count American Navy running out of Ammo and if American Navy defeats Iranian navy in the Strait of Hormoz still they won't be able to leave Iranian coast which run almost 100 miles more along the Gulf of Persia. Anti Ship Missiles are deployed in heavy numbers all along the coast. Even if Americans take out entire force of Iranians along the gulf of hormuz they still won't be safe from other Iranian attack position. @@rnash999 Gotta keep in mind the navigation of all involved was scripted and fairly static. Real destroyer would have turned sooner and reacted to shadow from further off while spitting all she had the entire time.

The catamaran was the Shahid Nazeri, the current flagship of the IRGC-N and is a patrol boat not a corvette. However they do have at least 3 catamaran corvettes under construction right now dubbed Shahid Soleimani

@@ireviewshtuff nah they got invaded but the Iraqis never got anywhere and it just ended with a peace treaty that the UN imposed. No border changes, nothing. And back then Iran had just had a revolution and was unorganized and unstable yet they still managed to hold off the Iraqis which were supported by both the US and the USSR with weapons and equipment. Iran got most of it's stuff from Syria and China and whatever was left from the old governments armory. So to answer your question. No they did not loose.

Cap. Thanks for this amazing video. I just wanted to clarify what is being deliberately misreported in the west. In this incident, the US destroyer was trying to seize the tanker and the Iranian ships stopped the seizure. Not the other way around! Of course no one wants to say that here!

When the gunboats passed the DD's, they could have knocked out their phalanx and radars with the duska's.
More spacing for the drones so that a single SM-3 doesn't knock out 20 of them at a time.
Make the attack happen at the same time, the boats were too slow, the drones too fast.

We also used to watch from the AWACS while Iran and Iraq went at it in the 80's.
How to spice this up; maybe have the Iranians have proper Aircraft in the Mix along with Missile Boats and their Frigates. On the US Side; have either a large Recon plane or Drone (like JSTARS or Global Hawk) to scan the Surface for threats and a bigger CAP with maybe even land based craft to support the group. This would be a high priority mission then having some Frigates tagging along for support for the carrier would make sense, they would probably be some form of LCS variant as the Constellation class hasn't entered service so using either the Oliver Hazard Perrys or if they're in the game the FREMM as a stand in for the Constellations (as it will be a variant of this) might work.
I was watching the drones and thinking, "I wonder if the radar can pick up the blob of the swarm, and just have SM-2s detonate their proximity fuses in the middle of the group?" And then an SM-2 blew up in the middle of the group and dropped multiple drones at once.

Hey Cap tho all the boghammers were programmed to only attack the carrier but if they were programmed to attack the carrier group as a whole I think they would have disabled or seriously damaged several destroyers as many of them crossed the picket line.
Also, Iranian SAMs should have been there to defend the missile sites.
This was a pretty stupid demo, catering typically to american audiences. So unrealistic it's actually funny.

I am a pacifist to the very bottom of my soul, against all sorts of war etc. How you've managed to reel me in to the point I don't miss an episode is beyond reason but I love what you do with these videos!
Before watching the actual fight with knowledge of the setup I would: 1) engage Silkworms with SM2, 1a) If a Silkworm get's past the SM2s then ESSM, RAM, and PHALANX should engage., 2) Engage Boghammer's with aircraft until close-in, 3) Engage drones with aircraft if available, 4) Chew up any leftover Boghammer or Drone with PHALANX Surface mode because that's what it was designed to do.

I love working nights with the helos, just inside the skin of the ship on a Burke at the waterline and getting woken up during gun shoot days. I would lay there under the red lights and just listen to the 25mm, 5in, CIWS, Browning half inches and M240s while at the same time hearing the water over the hull and being rocked. Pure sensory pleasure
In the confined space of the Persian Gulf, the escorts would never leave the carrier, and do not have to. Their SPY 1 / 6 radar system and VLS give them a 360 degree coverage of the entire gulf. They would literally see the planes taking off from Iran and forming up. Missile keys would be turned and the system put into automatic. Also the helicopters and planes from shore bases would enter the fray and kill small boats.
At the end of the sim, it was asked if this was realistic? I would say yes. The software and hardware is always being updated. I would say that the only unrealistic thing was that the 5" were not shooting the silkworms. This was done in the 90's when the Iranians shot some at US warships with some success. With newer radars and control systems, this would be easier with the more modern 5" gun and its newer proximity fuses. Plus silkworms are SLOW and HUGE respectively.
@Grim Reapers Just to let you know, when i was a flight deck yellow shirt on the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT CVN 71, we had 45 aircraft on deck. ship wide there was 82 total. during the Persian Gulf war there was two aircraft from the Iraqi AF 400 miles out on intercept heading for us, we launched every aircraft turning. trust me when i say you need to rework your model.

If Mod 0 Sea Wolf could knock 4.5in shells doing over Mach 1 out of the air I don't think these slow and much larger drones are going to trouble a system like Aegis nearly 40 years on.
no it won't trouble an aegis or similar....it will however run it out of ammunition and in real life the drones will just keep coming in by the hundred.....thats the second scary part of drone warfare.....add to that the drones ability to home in on any electronic emissions including jamming and it makes them very hard to counter with current weapons systems......i'd imagine in future we may see 30 and 50cal close in weapons systems liberally festooned on every military ship, vehicle and fixed position as standard equipment

Beyond that, lasers. Lasers have an unlimited magazine depth and can already, today, take down drones.
People like to write about the irrelevance of the carrier group because of whatever new tech is the fad, but chances are we already have the stuff to defeat it today.

Dude as a sailor in the Canadian Navy this was fucking awesome. Pretty much what we're trained to do when we roll with the Americans; we'll throw our ships in like cannon fodder with the Arleighs to save the carrier's
Exciting watching the set-up... I transited the Strait a dozen times in 1987-96. I remember the pucker-factor, and launching in an SH-60B a few times loaded with Hellfires, AND sitting in CIC/Strike on the carrier a number of times when I was "older". We ALWAYS had their Port and any KNOW Styx/Chinese missile sites targeted with Cruise missiles.
DANG that was exciting after watching - from 0-120mph in seconds, and 5-10 minutes of terror.

I think you have not taken into account some critical parameters:
-Iran has a long shore across the Persian gulf and will not initiate an attack just from one point. (you have to change the model to a more multi-directional attack)
-They currently have faster surface to sea missiles which they can hide in a passenger VANs and shoot at any location on the beach
-You have not taken into account the air cover of old mighty F-14s
-You have not taken into account the heavy SAM coverage in the area if they are going to initiate such an attach (something like "Sevom Khordad" which brought down the Global Hawk a while ago")
-Most of those speed boats are equipped with rocket launchers
-Some of those are equipped with light anti aircraft missiles like Stinger too
-No one initiate a drone swarm that close to each other which the opponent can bring multiple of them down by a single missile blast wave
-Also, I don't know how long would it take, to take about 120 Mavericks out of the box and load them on 30 F-18s, and bring them up to the deck. I don't think they are sitting in the lower deck fully loaded with Mavericks by default.
-And finally, they are heavily promoting their short range pin pointing ballistic missiles which they believe they are the main threat to the aircraft carriers.
it would be interesting if you can simulate it again factoring these parameters in... :)
They can only do so much to avoid server crashes man.
The Iranian timing was off which meant it became a piecemeal attack. Just perfectly shows how difficult a time on target attack is to co-ordinate. Could add AA sites and dispersion to the Silkworm site to help? Those Hornets got a too easy ride.

Drones should come in at a couple of different directions at wave height. Also there would be more than 50 so 200. The small boat swarm would also engage at different angles and they do have missile boats. So a mix of small boats would be better and much more realistic. There would also be a CAP up as well. Silk worm missiles and radar need to be spread out abit as well.

In real life the US carrier group would see all this activity happening from miles away and wouldn't even go near it.
It seems to me that the escort ships would be a priority for the Boghammers. For exactly this reason. If that first Destroyer had gotten pounded one or two that were essentially torpedos what is its combat effectiveness after that?
It would also be nice to see them with a mix of weapons like they often have, though I realize that might be hard on the server. But a 106 mm recoilless rife is going to hurt the thin skin of a modern destroyer, even the Dushka's and some RPG fire could damage sensitive equipment, reducing the effectiveness of the ship.
THe Silkworms might be set to target the biggest thing in the water. But the Boghammers have wetware guidance systems.
This was an amazing battle. A one-sided battle but an amazing one nonetheless.
My only critique is that the carrier should've sent up Seahawk helicopters packing missiles in addition to the Hornets.
If getting atomized by a Maverick was bad for those boats, imagine how much worse it would've been if those Hornets were packing Stormbreakers.
Yup, it'd be a turkey shoot. But the Iranians also pack more advanced anti ship missiles fired from shore that could do more damage.

@@grimreapers Well what you haven't taken into account is the Anti Ship Ballestic Missiles and Anti Aircraft Missiles and also Anti Ship Missiles installed on Speedboats almost all Iranian Gunboats carry Shoulder Launched Anti Aircraft Missiles and also Carry at least 2 Anti Ship Missiles too. While you stimulated Iranians running out of ammo but you didn't count American Navy running out of Ammo and if American Navy defeats Iranian navy in the Strait of Hormoz still they won't be able to leave Iranian coast which run almost 100 miles more along the Gulf of Persia. Anti Ship Missiles are deployed in heavy numbers all along the coast. Even if Americans take out entire force of Iranians along the gulf of hormuz they still won't be safe from other Iranian attack position. My estimate for casualty of this conflict is around 150 Gunboats along with it's crew and few drone and radar operators of Anti Ship and Anti Aircraft Missiles running at max at 1500-2000 Iranians. While heavy iranian attack on retreating formation of Americans navy is 3 Warships sunk and 1 taking light to heavy damage. Also Runway of Aircraft Carrier damaged with Casualty ranging from 600-1000 in single day not to mention Iranians attacking American Bases all over Middle East with Drones and Precision Missiles. Also fact to mention here Iran produces almost 150-200 Gunboats and Speedboats armed with Anti Ship Missiles every year and also is large producer of Anti Ship and guided rockets.

This was bloody awesome to view. I'd try an attack after the US Navy passes the straight with two different groups of boats assaulting the carrier group in a pincer movement, w/ missiles and drones coming from the Iranian coast into the center of the US Navy. Spread the defense out a bit and see how it handles the zerg boat rush from 2-3 directions.
I'd litter the sea bed with mines, especially homing models that release a torpedo when they're triggered. An SM-2 or Phalanx is worth exactly squat against a weapon like that.
Its nice to see those DDG's step up and perform now.

I'd have thought that spreading the silkworms out, concealing them, holding them back & then using a lot of them to take out the pickets as the fast patrol craft get close should be a thing. Also, arguably, wait to launch the drone swarm & the silkworm strike until the fast boats are closer to the target. Also, have the fast boat groups take different routes to the target, start from different places give the fast boat crews manpads as well as dushkas & put some air defences around the Iranian land based assets, because it wouldn't be a fun place to fly...

The follow-up action that would ensue after the hornets that are airworthy would rearm and would be hunting every Iranian naval, missile, and airforce asset in the gulf. Let alone what the Arleigh Burkes and subs would unleash on the coastline after the sun goes down. I am sure the Iranians have not forgotten what Ronald Reagen did to them in the 1980s.
The only realistic way Iran ever gets to touch and harm the navy is if they staged a peacetime ambush , during a war they will be smoked hard from about 500kms away
From the intro, DDG-66 is the USS Gonzalez.
SM-2 would actually detonate when its own warhead senses proximity. So the millisecond it enters the swarm it would detonate.
Edit: CIWS would also completely shred any subsonic thing entering its range. It even shoots at CHAFF autonomously. It doesnt get confused. If theres any sort of radar blip thats not marked it will shoot at it.
The one asset every sim missed is the Burks will also have many sailors on gunpoints around the ship wit .50,30, and other weapons. It is an awesome sight when they light them all up!
Well at least it wasn't the canadian attack on shipping. CF-18's had a bad attack run on an Iraqi frigate. nothing worked... anti-ship missiles failed to lock on. Bombs failed to drop, then when they went to guns, they only got off about 50 rounds each before BOTH guns on the 2 CF-18's jammed. apparently sand had gotten EVERYWHERE and just messed up everything on the poor cf-18's.
I hope they learned from that lesson. But what was Canada doing attacking an iraqi frigate? I thought they never participated in combat against Iraq.
@@humansvd3269 first iraq war. not 2nd. it was one of the silly jokes with that... and on those grounds, we got the US to upgrade the CF-18's for us. the problem was... they would only upgrade the ones in the theater...
so someone in the canadian military got the silly idea that... we needed to rotate arecraft into the theater so the previous ones could have their airframes checked. we got about half our aircraft upgraded before someone in the US military got wize to what we were pulling.

I think the CIWS is unrealistically underwhelming. It misses way too much. Also, in real life there would be sailors manning .50's on the railings and the big guns would be more accurate as well.

Phalanx shooting at small boats on the ocean misses all the time in real life. It's hard top believe, but just go watch videos of it trying.
CIWS made me almost piss myself hearing that shit. They give a warning they’re gonna fire but I somehow didnt hear it, walked on the catwalk and fuuuuck that thing was loud and terrifying.

When shooting at boats the CIWS is almost always in manual, meaning there is a real person aiming the gun through its camera. A second long burst throws 75 tungsten rounds towards a target. If even a quarter of those rounds hit, which they often do, anything topside would be turned into a mangled eviscerated mess. So those videos everybody is talking about... yea... You're also right. There would be crew served M240's and M2's on the lifelines. The DDG and the FAC/FIAC would have traded a lot more fire.
Also it's worth noting, that Carrier would not be launching fighters in the middle of a surface action unless the excrement had really REALLY hit the fan. And by that I mean a asymmetrical combat situation where there was an incoming air strike, (not drones or missiles but planes), A submarine threat, a surface action, and a unmanned vehicle swarm. Finely, DCS does not model the U.S. Navy's MK-45 MOD 4 5"/54 caliber lightweight gun very well. HE-VT shells would be the weapon of choice for slow drones like that. A ship would be loath to use its SM2 inventory on tightly grouped drones like that. Especially with a battery of ASCM's are launching from the coast.
I loved how when the Iranian trained the machine gun on the destroyer the DDG trained its 127 on the Iranian
The weakness of a drone swarm is if a big missile like an SM-2 hits a lot of drones are going down. Also I think the carrier got the first Silkworm that almost got through. Also it looks like RC's tail hook was down the whole time

Because ships can unmask more weapons, EW and fire control directors off their beam, the escorts would probably zig zag away from the threat, like alternating a 45 degree tack away. They want to be able to employ those weapons systems while trying to keep the range open. Most likely the CG would probably try to keep up with the CV and keep the best position for air defense while the DDG's zig zag and do their best to engage surface threats. Once air threats got within engagement range, the CG would turn some to unmask all its directors and EW systems while engaging vampires.
I believe that a carrier battlegroup can hit a swarm of drones with enough radar radiation to make them freak out at least.

Thank you for revisiting this. I was thoroughly confused with the last run of the boghammers. I'm always humbled by the wisdom of your subscribers comments, but my take away, after reading David Crist's book, Twilight War, was that the IRGC derives its bravado from fanaticism and a handful of marginal victories against the US by means of subterfuge. The rare instance, OP Praying Mantis, where the IRGC and/or Iranian Navy met the US Navy without pretense was devastating for Iran.

Reading comments I’ve come to an interesting thought for another sim..
First of all a gun mounted to a frame of a boat that small running thar fast over waves and wakes wouldn’t hit anything.. I don’t think anyone is even dumb enough to try that lol.. what would be much more appropriate would be seeing if those vessels can hold the weigh of Torpedo launch tubes on the side and if the Iranians are even have the supply enough for this.. I’d mount two single tubes on each boat.. send three groups from different angles of attack with 100’ spreads on the blast within each group.. wouldn’t waste time with drones as that just isn’t a real threat to a navel fleet unless they can send thousands..
Each of the three boat groups would at the center have a corvette or some other larger vessel that can defend the smaller boats till they can get to close enough but out of deck gun range launch torpedos and flee.. maybe a few of them loaded with explosives continue on.. all while launching some worms from multiple locations.. backed up by s300 to defend them against anything getting too close.. there is too much air support as I said before.. it takes time to arm fighters and time to get them to the deck.. this sort of engagement you’d have maybe 5-10 fighters ready at best.. they would actually be scrambling ground aircraft from near buy bases cause they would arrive faster then the carrier could get aircraft loaded, fueled and in the air.. 30 f18’s wo prior advanced warning and preparation is a spontaneous attack would take a full day to happen.

Could you run a simulation of what would have happened on the 1st of May 1982, if the Argentine carrier, which spotted the British task force first but didn't have enough wind, was able to launch her air wing? Could the Skyhawks have changed the course of the conflict?

The Iranians have been doing this since the 1970s. I was at the con taking a US Navy tanker through the Straights of Hormuz when the Iranians (Islamic Republic) messed with me in the early 2000s. They had a patrol craft and speed boats that would cut across my bow and yell stupid stuff on the radio. They even had guys on jet skis (with their cute Iranian flags) armed with RPGs driving around me. I told the Iranians that I am restricted in my draft and in traffic scheme. I told them on VHF that I would run them down if the got in my way and I am leaving their Holy Land. I did not alter course and they got out of my way.
Were they doing it before the islamic revolution in 1979? Doubtful.

What is the use of speedboats going through the destroyers getting picked off going after the tanker. You would've expect some kind of attack on the warships. Maybe a suicide run with explosives, or an attack with rpg's.
