  • During the afternoon of Wednesday 17th June 2020 a rather nasty storm developed over Templecombe. Around 1500 the sky darkened and heavy rain started followed by rumbles of thunder at around 15:5. The rain got heavier and the thunder louder with bolts of lightning every few minutes. by about 1530 the storm was overhead, a bolt of lightning flashed down followed by car alarms going off and some very deep rumbles of thunder. A house about 300 yards away had been hit leaving a whole in the roof and a lot of internal damage........

    I always get depressed driving thru there, remembering the once mighty goods yards and the huge railway operation reduced to a single line from a massive 24 hour operation :( I live a bit up the line in Gill so if you see a manic 3 wheel van running bout the place... that be mine ironically at the mo in the garage built on one of Wincanton's old goods yards... next stop up from Templecombe, the platform is actually just overgrown but unless they want to knock down a ton of houses no chance of putting the ol' S&D back ever.

    4:44, thunder is louder at this part, strangly...

    • @ghostontheline
      @ghostontheline  3 года назад +5

      Hi Anthony, thanks for watching my video. I checked back and yes it is a bit louder, it could be because the first part was slowed down a bit to capture the bolt a bit better. The bolt hit the roof of a semi-detached house several hundred yards away and blew all the power points out of the walls. Luckily the house was empty and no fire started but the roof had a large hole punched in it. BT had to replace a large number of wifi hubs in the village, luckily I had disconnected all appliances when the storm started. Happy New Year Pete

      @@ghostonthelinenother reason could just be how audio is recorded. I studied a bit of audio engineering but I’m not the best source. However, some consumer mics will go quieter when the microphone clips. This means the loudest part will sound significantly quieter. This is really obvious when recording concerts with a phone. Now when I do recording, I do have the ability to add a limited which also does this but I don’t think that is why this happens in your video.
      Edit: my audio engineer says it could also just be the frequency response of the microphone having more sensitivity to the lower rumbles than the higher pitched cracks.

    Great video but unfortunatly not a superbolt, superbolts generally tend to form over large bodies of water and usually happen in winter in the northern hemisphere, the energy carried in one of these strikes is ~1000x more than an average lightning bolt, so if it had been a superbolt most likely the house that got struck would no longer be standing and everyone nearby would be needing new windows. 😅

    Not likely positive, either bolt. Just very close and intense negative bolts. Thunder from a positive would have destroyed the recording equipment and produced vibrations equal to a 2.5 earthquake.
