    3/4. Lightning
Dr Nick Middleton of Oxford University investigates some of Britain's most extreme weather conditions, to find out how they are caused, and why they are so dangerous.
This programme looks at perhaps the most mysterious and spectacular weather phenomenon: lightning. Dr Middleton investigates how the raw electric power of lightning is created, and the dire consequences that occur if we are unlucky enough to find ourselves in the path of a lightning bolt. Why are some buildings set alight by lightning when others remain untouched? How is it that planes can fly into thunder and lightning storms, and still remain safe?

I've always found lightning incredibly fascinating. Whenever there's a storm in the distance, I'll stand outside and watch the lightning strikes. It's so pretty and awesome.

I remember when we had those storms. I was living in East London and it was constant flash, explosion, flash, explosion, flash, explosion non stop. It was amazing!

Flight TWA800 wasn't downed by lightning,. but a small short-circuit spark in some old wiring in the fuel tank which was basically full of warm vapour in a very low-filled fuel-tank from the jet having been stood in hot summer sun on the tarmac.

Alex - You can see lightning in the winter, although it is more common in warm/moist climate. Where I live there's no snow - we get lightning in winter. In fact, even in the US where I'm guessing you live, you can see lightning in winter.

Once again, only if the cloud base is positively charged. If it is negatively charged, electrons will rush from cloud to ground. The opposite happens when the base is positive, when electrons in the ground will be attracted to the cloud

Britain's weather isn't altogether pleasant - it's often cool and damp - but in the grand scheme of things, the UK's weather is quite tame. You don't get dangerous or frequent tornadoes, you don't get many thunderstorms (or much lightning), or deadly heatwaves (multiple 32+ degree days), or arctic cold snaps (-15 or colder, though some places in Scotland get that cold). You also don't get hurricanes. For the most part, the worst you get is rain and a little wind.

Even if you live in a place where you do get snow in winter, you still can get lightning. A few years back we had a snow storm and we saw lightning. look up Thunder Snow. Its an amazing and weird sight considering we never associate lightning with snow.

I live in Oxfordshire and I vaguely remember we had some nasty storms over a couple of summer's during that time, but honestly, we don't suffer that much from thunderstorms, we just get the odd one probably once or twice a year. At least that's what happens in the area I live in, can't speak for other counties.

That's true! I heard thunder last week (it's winter here in the UK) and there was lightning occurring during snowfall about 3 years ago.

static electricity is electric charge that collects on objects and stays there. When it moves it isn't static anymore and flows as DC. Tesla coils produce AC.

"mythbusters proved that its a myth that lighting has the effect this documentary claims about answering the phone during a lighting storm"
Bad advice! People have been struck this way in real life.
"In 1998, a nine-year-old girl was jolted by a lightning strike as she talked on the telephone in the family home in Columbus, Ohio. Megan Duty was whomped by the blast while seated on a stool in the kitchen - her mother and grandmother heard a thunderous noise and looked over in time to see the girl scream and throw the phone as smoke issued from her. The child, who had turned blue and experienced trouble walking, was treated at a nearby hospital and released the same day. Other than having a bit of trouble hearing in her right ear, she afterwards appeared to be fine."
Narciso, Dean. "Lightning Jolts 9-Year-Old Girl on Telephone."
The Columbus Dispatch. 25 August 1998.
She was lucky. People have died.
Obviously if it's a cordless phone you should be good!

CuriousVideos Lightning struck a house in which I was renting the bottom floor. The worst damage was above me -- holes blown into and out of the walls, night lights that had exploded and singed the walls; all the electronics fried, etc. -- but it also fried my phone and answering machine and a stereo that had been plugged in slowly died over the next week or two. In addition to wires carrying the electricity, the pipes also acted as good conductors; some jumped out of my shower and vaporized about 2 cc's of the concrete floor, coating the whole bathroom with a coarse dust. DO NOT TAKE A SHOWER DURING A THUNDERSTORM!

Where I grew up, an indoor antenna would not really have worked.
At least those old analog signals degraded gracefully. These digital ones can't deal with any static at all.

Though the lightning does not last that long in winter they are still quite frequent along the coast of the Netherlands. Always at night, always above the water and cloud to cloud rather than cloud to ground, especially in Holland. Quite the light show to be honest.

Lightening is what helps keeps the earth energized...as it also recharges buried crystals & thunder stimulate plants to grow. calling lightening evil sounds like a religious fanatic *rolls eyes & shakes head...oh brother sighs* Lightening has too many positive aspects to be evil eh! ;-)

I would never take 'mythbusters' seriously. It's just entertainment tv programme while there were many real cases of people injured by phone line, or even by water pipes during a storm. Just think that steel/brass water pipe is much better electricity conductor than plain earth, especially when the soil is dry

    • @23viktor23
