    When I was six we had a severe thunderstorm one afternoon in August 1985, our house was struck by lightning during the storm along with about a dozen others in about a mile radius of ours (North Aberdeenshire countryside). It’s one of my most vivid childhood memories, right down to the engineer from the hydro electric telling my Mum he’d never seen storm damage like it before. I absolutely love a good thunderstorm but I’ll always be aware of how dangerous they can be.

      Waw you're lucky , I live in France, near the Swiss border, I wish I saw a lightning storm like you experienced. We have tstorms here but rather they give a few lightning strikes at maxima in a miles radius, not like you experienced, neither like on the video, so many in a close range!

    Dude, those upward leaders in your yard! And at one point, you could hear the crackle snap sizzle of the main bolt making the connection. I love it when you see upward leaders.

    not to be a party pooper coz this is a a decent video. but those that appeared to be in your garden was actually the reflection of the lightning in your camera lense. Actual strike was few hundred yards away

  • @lugash4
    @lugash4 4 года назад +11

    I think you captured what they call a "step leader" from the main lightning strike......if it was the main lightning strike then it would have been intense white and your windows would have really rattled and you would have dropped the camera with the shock of it and quite possibly thrown you backwards a bit with the soundwave......as a rule you can tell if the lightning strike has fallen towards you by the sound of the thunder....the crackling sound directly after a strike indicates overhead and you can usually hear the thunder rumble on for sometime....the other is when you see a bright and fierce lightning strike and a few seconds passes before you hear the thunder as a rolling and muffled noise indicating the strike has fallen away from you. Good footage well shot.

      Lightning and crack of thunder would have been instantaneous and the ground would have exploded from the heat of the lightning. Most likely it was a little bit away and made u think it was that close. Also your camera would have messed up too from the EMP of the lightning

      I noticed that too - the leader was just in front of him - so he came close to being struck by the main bolt

    Thats a fantastic storm by British standards.
    I moved to Florida 5 years ago; British storms are no match for the insane summer storms over here. Its not uncommon for fork lightning to strike every few seconds at the front of a storm

    Hello,
    I hope you're well. I'm currently working on a documentary about extreme weather throughout 2015 and was wondering whether I could talk to you about potentially using some footage from your lightning storm video in the documentary?
    The programme is using segments of user generated content to paint a picture of extreme weather throughout 2015, and it would be fantastic to use some of your footage in the film.
    It would be great if you could email me at guy.baillie-grohman@raw.co.uk so we can discuss the details.
    Thanks very much for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.
    All the best, Guy.
