    Angie Clawson I remove the roots so they will easily slide into place in the moss sphere. This sphere is tightly packed with moss (and I mean, TIGHT with moss :) to where a root ball wouldn't fit. I make cuttings, let them callous, insert them into the sphere, and they will form brand new roots and do great! Thanks for the question! ~Laura

      Garden Answer I would love to see an update on how this looks now, or if it is still intact. Seems like it would be able to last a long time with trimming, or thinning as the plants grow.

    @gardenanswer it looks amazing but I am curious how long did it last for you? Specifically the ones you had to use wire and tape being they were taped covering the exposed end of the stem how were they able to produce any roots or absorb water? Never used floral tape so not sure how it works. But it looks great and I have a pot filled with the same type that over the years crew a billion babies and is now just a hot mess. Love this idea to possibly do with those.

    • @adrianamarcia697
      @adrianamarcia697 5 лет назад

      Hello Angie, the idea is for a short time, succulent plant grows easily the roots, so if you cut them or just plant a leave they will create roots, and is not necessary have the roots in this case, they will grow from the cut area and also from the borrow of the leaves, this why she did the fake root tecnique. I hope I answer your question.Good luck..

    If you simply stuck the succulent cuttings into the moss ball I don't see why it wouldn't work. Assuming there's some potting mix inside the ball the succulents would be perfectly happy growing in it. If you think it would get too moist you've never dealt with a kokedama before. They dry out SO quickly in the wind, it's actually harder to keep them well watered.
    I'd be more interested in how the plants on the bottom grew. With the ball swinging in the wind I can't see light being an issue for those on the bottom and back, but how exactly would a plant's root system develop upside-down, how well would it grow with inverted gravity? Eventually they'd get really leggy, I assume, as they try to grow up vertical, but I guess you could grow some smaller sedums on the bottom and just trim them back constantly.

  • @emsuga

    Hi Laura! How do you do the bottom? My succulents keep falling out :( I'm using an 22g wire, maybe it's too flimsy?

    I've watched several of your videos on succulents in different shapes. You use same pins to secure the cuttings but I'm not sure how you do this. QUESTION: Does the pin go through the stalk or the leaves, or do you avoid poking them and just straddle them? You do it so quickly and easily it seems you are poking through them but ------. Fantastic video! Love them all.

    Dear Laura, I had a crafting party, ordered the balls, bought the plants and supplies, and we made our spheres. I have a question about watering. The balls were heavy and wet from being submerged in the manure tea water. Should we let them dry completely out before watering again? I know the roots are just trying to form and so want to make sure the watering isn't too much or too little at the beginning. Also, which ball is preferable, the one from topiary art works which is just moss, or the one from Braun which is soil in the middle? Also, I checked out the link above and I believe you need to be a business owner to order from them because they ask for a tax ID number to sign in. Is that true? Thanks!

    Succulents petals are so fragile in my experience, I found them really hard to handle by the time I got them into a normal pot the leaves were breaking off with the slightest touch. I can't imagine what a disaster it would be for me to try to get them into a sphere as you have here. Is there a trick to not destroying the succulents when handling them?
