Agreed. It's literally not her decision to make, even (especially!) if she were already a Representative. Judges and juries decide legal guilt in individual cases in democratic justice systems, no-one else. Legislators make law, and judicial officials apply it with reference to individual circumstance, past precedent, and the Constitution, because when the same people who make the rules also enforce them, they tend to serve their own interests instead of society's. Not knowing that makes her dangerously, fascistically ignorant and arrogant, which is to say "a modern Republican".

@@capbucky Not exactly. She's still a registered democrat, but ran (and won) on the Republican line for a seat on the Nassau County Legislature in 2021 & 2023. That's why the GOP chose her to run as Santos's replacement. Unfortunately for her, she refused to clearly state whether she's pro-choice, and she couldn't or wouldn't explain her position on this immigration bill.
I know *a lot* of people who vote in that district. I know Seth's job is making jokes, but - contrary to how Seth presented it - the 10th District includes some of the wealthiest & fanciest suburbs of Long Island's North Shore... plus a healthy chunk of Queens (those voters who appeared on camera were all in Queens).
Not to be pedantic, but the stereotypical Italian Long Islanders Seth was mocking are on the South Shore of Nassau County, not in Great Neck & Roslyn, where Tuesday's vote took place.
While Pilip has made plenty of pro-Trump statements on camera, she also said - when asked about Trump's indictments - "Trump has to go through his process" and "No-one is above the law." Just as she did on the subject of abortion rights, She was trying to have it both ways where 45 is concerned. So, when she said she supports Trump & that Trump is "a great candidate" it wasn't enough for him (plus, she lost, so Trump distanced himself from her immediately)
she tried to grift the public, she's in the right party.
Don't forget a woman as well - she's been disenfranchised of her bodily autonomy by republicans, yet she still seems to be clamoring for the shackles.
I am getting tired of the polls being mentioned without mentioning when, where, and how people were polled. Also what the sample size was.

My dad's a nonvoter (just refuses to vote) but has a lot of conservative ideologies from his childhood about 'who will pay for that though?!' He was thrilled Medicaid wasn't getting expanded in our state for years and years even though he desperately needed it. Because people who didn't deserve it would be the ones taking advantage of it, according to him. (Luckily my state expanded a couple years ago now and he has it anyway and is finally getting myriad of health issues taken care of, as can those people he thinks don't deserve it.)

Charges are recommended by a jury not by a DA. Trump was indicted because of randomly selected jurors not a politician or a party.
Why don't Republicans understand their own legal system?

Oh most of them do, but they know their constituents do NOT.
Because their rhetoric and/or grift doesn't work if they say that Trump was indicted by a jury of total randos who were largely anonymous. And while the DA did in fact have a major hand in getting Trump indicted, the fact that a jury found Trump too suspicious makes it harder to the Republican thing where they sell their supporters a story as opposed to promising policies, in this case being that the legal system is aligned against Republicans, the same thing they did to "the mainstream media" that allowed Fox News to become as powerful as it is. It stokes their base's persecution complex, as well as allowing them to turn a complicated legal analysis into a short soundbite phrased like an action adventure story. The DA is a singular villain for them to fight, no matter how pointless it would be, and more important, hate with enough passion to vote in favor of Republicans, for the DA's job or others. And even if they have to admit later that a situation like this was more complicated than their ten second soundbite, the emotions and feelings they riled up in their voters will persist even if they have to consciously acknowledge reality.
tl;dr: The GOP's strategy is to make their base emotional with bullshit, and those feelings will endure and cause people to vote for them, even if those feelings are later contradicted by facts.
Yup. I studied EDRM back in the day (emotional direct response marketing) and so much of what Trump does in his donation emails is out of the emotion activation checklist

In 1986-7 the state of NSW in Australia asked for bids to build the first casino in Sydney. Four groups submitted bids for the lucrative project. Cabinet papers declassified 30 years later revealed that the Trump bid was rejected after NSW State Police reported that the Trump mafia connections and financial unviability made their bid undesirable.
And that's coming from New South Wales, which has an ongoing reputation for a fantastic amount of state corruption. I'm not doubting the accuracy of the police report on 45; I'm just saying that, in context, this is like Sam Bankman-Fried deciding you're too untrustworthy for him to take your money. The tactic here was obviously trying to appeal to that districts large jewish population(especially after the Santos debacle of him lying about being Jewish) with an orthodox beta Israel, But Suozzi was easily able to counter that with his past staunchly pro Israel record to make that a non issue in the election

I think a lot of it also has to do with how the GOP is in a state where they'll nominate anybody who can properly parrot Trump's bullshit, and the only people who can do that are either scam artists or lunatics, if not both at the same time. And given how profitable it is to be a politician and how easy it is to get a nomination from the GOP, every huckster willing lick Trump's ass on national TV is applying for nominations. And those who are parroting Trump sincerely rather than running a scam are typically deluded, bigoted, and often megalomaniacs.
I'm not sure why ANYONE would vote for someone that was a soldier in a foreign army, to take part in their government. It's absurd, it's almost like they want us to burn to the ground. Glad she lost.
